Rare Terpene Preservation

There is a wealth of recent information in this post by a cannabis researcher, including a terpene frequency chart. It shows that terpene distributions are pretty tightly clustered into three categories, with the majority of terpenes having very little representation in circulation. I’d suggest we also try to preserve strains that contain these less common terpenes. Any thoughts?

Interesting stuff. Wish it was in an easier to consume media than Twitter posts. By and large it just says what I think a lot of us already knew. That the names on the jars at dispensaries are largely meaningless. That popular weed flavors dominate the market (hello Runtz!). But it's cool to see it studied more analytically.

I'm all for working towards preserving the less popular terpene profiles. I tend to prefer the funkier more unique tasting strains anyways. Fruity and sweet has never really been my cup of tea.

I need a chart that tells me what each terpene tastes/smells like though lol

Hmm… I bet that flavor and aroma info is available but we’d have to search each one individually. That’s no big deal if we just stick to the 10-15 mentioned. We might be able to get a more complete list from the researchers or publications as well. I could make a google sheet and see what I can pull into it. Ultimately we’ll need to know what terpenes we have access to, and it may take mining a couple different cultivars of the same name to locate them when we don’t have lab results. I’d be more interested in the preservation aspects myself than targeting the tastiest terpenes, leave that to the professionals ?
