Provenance provided by @woodhippy , please add anything I may have missed!

Pre-Invasion Afghans (F-5's), from seeds I cold stored in 1981, &
1990, & 2015.
.
Background Info: I (Ohsogreen) picked up about 500 of these seeds
on the upper trade routes of the Indus River in Pakistan, in late
1977 / early 1978. I was there doing a Hash Deal. Prior to the Big
Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. These were from tribal lines, grown
in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
.
I made the (F-2's) of them in late 1980, using over a dozen
females, and no less than a dozen males (cold stored some of these
in early 81).

I made the (F-3's) in late 1989, they were also made using over a
dozen females, and no less than a dozen males (cold stored them in
early 90).
.
I broke them out late January 2014, and did an (F-4) run. Did an
even split on both, eight F-2 moms, eight F-3 moms, same split on
the dads. The selections were the best candidates, based on my past
experience with them.

In Feb 2016 I broke out cold stored seeds from 1990, and 2015 of
this line, and did another open pollination. Using an even split of
6 females from each year, and 6 males from each year. Harvested in
July 2016.

These are True (un-Dutch-ified) Afghan's both low & highland phenos.
.
Stellar breeding stock, wicked potent, good range of flavors /
odors (offensive to sweet), bud types (rock hard nugs, to semi-
skunk style colas), and trich coverage from fair to dripping....

Thanks again to all who made this possible!

We were getting a bit worried about their trip, but they finally made it today, safe and sound, and hearty looking!

Once they're established, the plan is to veg outdoors for strength and size.
They'll be brought in before August to flower inside, in privacy, and to avoid anything that might be outside after August.
If all goes well, they should be fat and full of seed come October.
Wish us luck! Lol

There damn well better be more than 4 packs at the end of all this, or I've failed miserably! Lol

I've got big shoes to fill with @Skunky Dunk Farms lb+ haul of skunk 1

Edit: just thinking, maybe that could be a new dick swinging contest for breeders? Seeds per cubic foot? Lol

I'll get em as big as I can, and still squeeze them in flower together somehow.
I just might not have completely thought this through, but I'm committed now, damnit!

That pound plus is just what i sent to the vault!
I've kept a nice stash for myself as well.
It was actually easy to pull off, its all in the vigorous veg. More flowers make more seed.

You know what? I don't need any EXTRA pressure, thanks ??

Right up my alley!
I would like 50 pack no. 5, If available.
Perhaps I could help in future preservation project.

Alright, looks like we've got our first bet on #5 as being the front runner!
A bold prophecy while they're all still swimming, and not even numbered yet!
What say ye all?

Ok, I've been thinking (and drinking), and since I've asked people to guess something, I might as well start a contest, right?

But what are the parameters? Subjective at best, I guess. Which pheno will be the best? You might just have to trust my judgement on that, unless someone else has a better, less objective way to judge?

For now, my idea is, whoever picks the best (in my opinion, or any other community settled standard) pheno wins the prize.

I'll offer any crosses I've made so far, and maybe a bulk pack of these Afghans, if supplies last, to the winner, as of now.

Terms and conditions subject to change, and all the legalish mumbo jumbo...
And depending on what @Deebs has to say about this whole crazy drunken idea...

With a heirloom strain, what would the original farmer do?
Probably choose by vigor, scent and intuition.
Would he keep a plant that was radically different? (A mutant?) Perhaps not.
A male showing pollen extremely early would most likely be pulled out.
Afghanistan has high desert, ranging from cold at night to hot in the day time. Cold, heat, and drought tolerance would have been important.
The tenacity of the resin glands would have been important. Easier to break off, easier to make hash.

I think about these things. Wish I could talk to a heirloom grower in Afghanistan. You folks over there have internet....?
(I have to go to town or a friend's house for internet)
Anyone here have relatives there?

I seem to be good at picking good phenos.
#1 Effect and #2 Scent (both taken in consideration, if it smells phenomenal, it most likely has good effect)
#3 Vigor (resistance to disease)
#4 Growth pattern (shape)
#5 Color

Taste seems related to Scent.

Alright, I'm a bit concerned, and may need some help...

I could also just be a little paranoid, which I'd rather be, in this case...

Beans swam for about 36 hrs, sinking within 12-16hrs. They went into a moist coffee filter, in a dixie cup, inside a jar, on Friday morning, 3 days ago. Checked for signs of tails daily.

So far, nada. No cracks, tails, nothing.

I feel like I always have signs of life by now.
Usually, I'll have cracked seams, and possibly tail pops within the first day or two from soak.

These beans did seem somehow heartier than others, but I normally don't use any sandpaper or cracking methods, so I just went with my normal germinating routine.

They're still barely moist in the coffee filter, and no mold or rot.

The last thing I wanna do is lose any of these, let alone all of em!

So, what would you guys do to try and save these babies?
Still try the sandpaper?
Try a most gentle cracking method?
(Not sure if they'd crack before crush, if the shells are softened)
Plant them in dirt, or coco pucks?
Just be patient and keep an eye on them?

Lemme know what you think. I'll be pissed to lose these things before they even start :cry:

I would be patient. They inherently want to be planted though! At least that's how I have always felt, and was quick to plop em in the dirt.

I've personally had old beans take up to 5-6 days to germ. Just keep the parameters in order... warmth, humidity, etc.

I am sure others would have some thoughts on the subject also, lots of experience here.

Things to consider:
surface sterilize using an h202/distilled mix initially.

Yeah, they're still warm and humid so far.

I usually like to babysit them through the filter phase, where they're usually out of shells with a bit of a tail, before I plant them.
Seems the times I plant straight, or without watching them, they fail more often than not for me. Just happened with the Shotgun Willie I planted "early for me" ...0/10.
The round I planted just before those was 17/18 up... Ugh
Keeping a patient eye on these with fingers crossed.
