Afgaan 90 Heirloom Preservation

I contacted Angus @ The Real Seed Co and this is his explination of lineage.

hi SD,

Thanks for getting in touch

As per the description, the Afghaan 90 was acquired by us c. 1990 in Amsterdam, then stored

I don't exactly know what you mean by "how many times has it been reproduced?"

The strain has clearly been inbred in Holland for at least a few years pre. 1990

In other words, it's not a "landrace", which is why we sell it as an "heirloom"

Anything else, let me know

Best wishes,

Angus

"Us" is vaguer than I'd like, but okay (ideal would be "I purchased them"). So someone he's partnered with "acquired" them. That would make his knowledge secondary not primary.

When people are squirrelly my hackles go up... how would someone not understand the question "how many times has it been reproduced" that seems like a fairly clear question, particularly if the answer is "once" (I found one reference online that indicated it was reproduced once to generate the seeds for sale so that seems like a plausible answer). Weird that he wouldn't just say once if that was the case.

What I was really curious about (obviously I could just ask myself) is how many seeds they started with, how many germinated, and how many males and how many females were used to make the seeds currently for sale. Also, what kind of packaging were the 1990 seeds in.

Clearly I'm a bit of a skeptic on this. One way or another a 1990 seedline has obvious value. I just wish there was a little more info, e.g. simply saying which seedbank they were acquired from would tell us something.

Ok all you breeders, I'm of the never rush camp when comes to vegging and such.
But,,,, on this run what is the procedure to force preflowers to show?
After they are 3 weeks can i give them 12 hours of darkness a night or two?
Any other options.
Reason I'm asking is i want to put the girls in 3 gal and the boys in 2's.

Or not. As I said the other day I sent off the rest of my questions, namely how many seeds were started, how many germinated, and how many were used (male/female), were they in original packaging when he got his hands on them, what seedbank were they from (I figured that question might be pushing my luck but figured I'd try), and if it took more than one generation of selection to achieve the dwarf line.

The initial response I got was that if information sought was relevant it would have been contained in the description on the website but that they'd be happy to answer any other questions. I politely pointed out they were inviting me to ask more questions they wouldn't answer. They responded (synopsis now) that the Cannaworld is full of opinionated liars and they're guarded about answering questions. Eventually they said, in amongst a bunch of other stuff about uneducated rubes opining on forums, that the seeds came from a bank that no longer exists, and the plants speak for themselves, and the dwarf line breeds true, so QED. I suggested should they ever change their mind and want to share more than they might come here and share.

They are nice looking plants regardless of anything else.

Ok, so I'm slightly medicated and I'm thinkin tommorrow i will transplant these we ones to 1gals and after a couple days will flip to 12/12 to force sex.
Then transplant the boys into 1 gals and the gals into 3 gals.
Move the boys and 12/12 to another tent to finish flower and collect polen.
Meanwhile, the gals are in the 5x5 under 18/6 to veg for a couple three weeks, flip and after 3 weeks pollinate.
Does this sound sain?
Anything out of kilter?

^^ One thing I like about seed reproduction/increase runs... my normal "hmm, but that might stress the plants" thoughts switch over to "bonus, it might stress the plants a little and I can keep an eye out for any indications of instability."

Hoping you get a nice ratio!
