Anyone into metal detecting?

So anyone into metal detecting? I bought one a few years back. A minelab equinox 800. It's a higher end unit. It can be used up to 9' fully submerged underwater (fresh or salt) w/o issues. I only used it a handful of times. I may have found 5.00 in change, a Swiss army knife, a sterling silver religious charm (120.00 value), ring (may be gold or silver), hot wheels cars, and LOTS of pull tabs.

I plan on hitting clearwater beach while on vacation a few times when we'll be down there next week. Hoping to find something to cover the 1200.00 I paid for this thing.

I have wanted a metal detector for years. I live in a gold rush town in nor cal, there is gold everywhere still. For now I will have to live vicariously through your adventures and just keep panning.

I'd love to try it I'm in a very old area with a big population there are 68 parks in my city and all of them I'd love to give that a go I've been saying it for years. Very cool thread @DemonTrich

Please check your local laws before detecting. Some areas have very strict laws. Public beaches are the best. Most state parks do not allow detecting. Florida has weird laws about finding relics over 50yrs old, you must turn them in to the state. Mainly because of all the sunken ships, then the storms wash the bounty up onto shore.

After a storm I bet would be the best. I used to live on the cape and would see guys going up and down the beach. Very cool find by the way ?

I've been wanting one for years, but have never pulled the trigger.
Daughter and I go gold panning here in CO, and a detector would make a great addition to that hobby. I've always loved hunting for treasures. Whether that treasure is a pc of gold, jewlery, or just a neat looking rock I have fun finding them.
Find some of the sweetest places to hang out during the hunting of them.

I still have to figure out all the settings on mine. It's way too complicated. Apparently you can have it set to only hit on gold. Which may help to find good panning spots.

That was exactly my thoughts on getting one. A waterproof one that I can stick in the stream and such for finding good spots to pan in. A good # of spots close by to go hang out and pan with my daughter.
Lots of old mines within an hr or two with a shit ton of mine tailing piles to scan around on. Be nice to have one of those.
What'd that one run you? Don't remember if you'd said. Minelabs wasn't it?

Check out the minelab equinox 800. It's not the 2500 detector, but it's deffinately NOT a crappy one at all. This one is highly (lol) reccomended and has great reviews. After watching those gold TV shows, personally I'd bring down a small riffel(sp) type of dredge, and feed it 1 shovel at a time. Also, there's a mod that's strongly reccomended for the 'nox 800. It's a secure ptfe mount that secures the coil to the pole. The oem one breaks easily. This beefs it up greatly. I think it's like 30 bucks or so.

I have a couple of entry level Tesoro Compadres. I have not gone for years, but any field where events like fairs or carnivals were held, were great for coins. There are also man made beaches on lakes that are in parks, great for jewelry. Those were great to hit in the off season. You do need to get a permit here for most places. Old parks are good too but you can't make a mess or look like you are digging. Working at first daylight eliminates a lot of complainers.........and if you dig, somebody will complain.
