um yeah you're addressing a couple hundred of us right now. Sup? How may we assist you? Good luck finding one locally, if you dont already know people involved in the scene, nobody's gonna want to bring some stranger under their wing. Just how it is. But, we all like to help each other here. Growing is easy! well, growing good weed is easy. growing phenominal weed takes a bit more work. but you can get there!

Ny and certainly NJ will be a different environment in a couple of months. NJ to the plus side of legalization, ny to make it's decision. I would just start asking specific questions here, digest the answers and move forward one step at a time. Growing is really a group of small learning curves that you'll learn to operate as a single effort. Ask away, show us who you are so to speak, there are folks in your "neighborhood" here, I'm almost certain ;)
Welcome!

This is good advice. @Str8firehomey there is a question option when you are posting a new thread that gives you the ability ask something specific, and then other members can chime in and give you answers. The best answers can be upvoted. Things are changing in the Tri-State Area, that’s for sure.

Hey all, been looking to get into growing as this plant has been a lifelong obsession of mine. Any ideas of how to find a mentor? It seems almost impossible any help would be greatly appreciated. I am in the NJ NY area.
I am new to growing too.. I used to always just plant some seeds outdoors and come back a few months later and harvest whatever is left. real lazy guerilla style was my style for awhile..(nice little rhyme there lol) but to address your question. I have learned so so so much just scanning through the forums on this site. If you want someone to pretty much hold your hand.. that will be impossible but if you are at least semi mechanically inclined, have grown some sort of plant and are ready to do the leg work then the guys here will teach you everything you want to know. this site is full of master breeders who are some of the most humble dudes ive had the pleasure to connect with online. If you have any questions about pretty much anything someone here will have an answer or has probably been through it already. Definitely hit up the infirmary if you have any questions about your plants health once you start growing. you found your mentors just dont be afraid to ask the questions and make sure you do the leg work. I have become a much better grower in my few months of frequenting this forum. good luck man and we are happy you found us!!!!! also if you want another noob to bounce ideas or just chat with hmu in the pm box or on IG @dyonisis_grows

Pretty much like everyone has said we got you covered from hydro to organic, diy lights of all sorts, and fire genetics flying all over the place, I'd start there the best setup in the world won't make boof strains into fire, but a bad run of great genetics is still gonna be great smoke imo, and welcome to the pack sir

What are your needs and goals? Let’s start with size, Howe big of an area are you looking to do? Would you be interested in a separate veg and flower space?
My goal would be to start with great genetics. Indoor, same area for veg and flower as this would be in a finished basement, I have about a 6x6 space to work with, 7.5 ft ceiling with a small window venting to outside. I am looking to use led unless advised otherwise. This is my starting point.

What's your budget for equipment? And are you getting a tent or is this a room?

Gonna be honest with you, genetics arent really gonna mean shit til ya know how to read a plant and give it what it wants. Its a decent starting point, but a great grower can make bagseed into gold while a mediocre grower can piss all over an easy self growing plant by trying to be too attentive, shit like that. That said, lots and lots and lots of great genetics around nowadays. Guessing that thats a small room and not a tent? Okay, couple things you're gonna need, air exchange, some decent LED lights (i aint gonna touch that, others here can tell you SO Much more about led's than I can) since thats what you wanna run, and I think its a better choice provided you dont need the additional heat you can get with HID lighting. I like running the HID in my big closet space cause it gets way colder in there. Do you have anything to read the rooms temps and humidity? That will also be important, as are means to adjust that. Plant food is pretty easy, i'd go with something like Jacks 2 part or similair. I used to go HARD for mega crop but i dont any more, they've changed the recipe too many times.

I think that yeah, that should be a good starting place for now. Environment is important, get that dialed in and you will have a lot less headaches getting everything else to go right.

Ya the beans really are the easiest part... a d getting them here isn't a real problem..
If You need a place on line to buy, there's a few good ones.. I'm sure there's a few peeps here that would send you some stuff...
So back to $$$$$

How much do you want to spend??
And I take it you have nothing, no soil, pots ,
Do you have a green thumb, can you look at a house plant and know what it needs?
Or Are you going to need meters and etc..

Just a little more info is needed...

Can you spilt the area up with a fast small wall to get like 2 area's, cause in the long run your going to want a veg area, and a flower zone.....
Maybe a tent in the room will work too..

Big thing is $$ you got 2 grand 5 grand or 500 hundred???

I would start with soil. FoxFarmsOcean Forrest and add 20% perlite to it. Going for great genetics is a good choice, my advice would be to start with the best quality feminized beans that budget allows. They have an advantage for you at this point, you can read up/learn all about males and females while you're growing the fems and you will be getting weed on your first grow!
A 6'x 6' x 80" space sounds flat out wonderful. It's a big space, I'd think about getting a tent, like a 3x3 at some point. You can veg and then flip to flower in the same space for now to get a feel for things. Work on your fans, lights and other peripherals now. In the soil mix above you will easily make it into flower ( maybe the whole way) before you have to consider what nutes you want to buy. Keep it as simple as possible for now.

The trick to finding a mentor is talking to people. Even people who don't smoke weed will sometimes know people who grow.

When I was first starting off, my counselor connected me with a coco grower who offered to teach me how to grow and would even set me up with used equipment. The only catch was that I'd have to give him 10% of my harvests for the next two years. In hindsight this would have been a pretty good deal, but I was focused on learning organics at the time so nothing ever came of it.

More recently I was talking to one of the farmers I get compost from, and he was telling me about one of his customer's grows. He said he was growing in tents in a warehouse, and that he was profiting enough from it to pay for a new $40,000 tractor with cash. I inquired further, and he called the dude and mentioned that I was interested in his setup. He ended up giving me his number, with an offer to tour his grow if I was ever in the area.
