"That is the last onion I will ever grow"

This summer, when we dug those up, my Grandpa informed me that he was not planning on sowing a garden next spring.
" I am going to get a deluxe, cart-membership and go golfing every day. "
Guy is 90 years old, I would say he deserves it.

Thought I would wear it upon my belt , as was the fashion of the day ,however I decided otherwise.

Sorry, for the downer @spyralout ,, been on my mind. 10 years this week.
He drown in the "Willmore Wilderness Park" chasing goats, with two of my siblings.
My older brother was rescued by helicopter, on one side of the river.
My younger bro attempted a rescue, and ended up on the other side. He ran the 5 miles or so, back to Cache Creek Prison. He had stopped to cut off his wet pant legs -so he could run faster. Amazing that he could source that energy- they had spent five days wet, crouching behind rocks, above the tree-line. I believe only divine adrenalin could have carried him like that. He must have sounded like a moose crashing through that bush. Covered on blood from the waist down , the perimeter guards drew rifles on him, as they thought he was an escaped prisoner. He spent an hour in a cell, while they did a head count.

I spent a week in a stupor, while they searched for his body. Just brain dead. Fasting and praying, for his wife and kids.

On the 8th night ( no shit) , I had a dream of the most riotous white water. The snow was flying sideways, and I could feel the icy spray from the river on my face.
I was huddling with my brothers, on the bank. We could communicate by eye contact, but could not speak.
They became unresponsive, and I remember trying to wrap my arms around them ,to shelter them, as we froze to death.
Suddenly, I was alone.
The howling stopped, the moon began to cast a comforting glow across the now placid, and still water.

I dreamt: I watched the body of my brother , face down, as it came to rest on the far bank.
I recall the comfort that saturated my soul, as I knew I had found him. This is where it gets weird,,,
The moment a began to consider his physical body, I saw it transform- in a glow of blue light.
From the water emerged a glowing blue Royal Elk, ( yup, I had the Petronas dream)
My voice cracked, as I called out
"Rick !"
I immediately felt foolish , trying to cross that line. Not my place.
Without turning, the Stag came full-stop. Lowered his head in full courtsey , and silently continued on his way.

I woke up feeling peaceful. Decided to break the fast. Before my Rye-toast came up , the phone rang.
" They found your brother " my Dad tells me.
A long silence fell after I exclaimed,
" That is great news !".
He thought I was confused, and added,
" He is dead, you know ?"
'Yes', I explained, 'but, I already feel better than I did yesterday'

It was sometime before I realized that my interpretation of the the courtsy was incorrect; and not for me.
It was not a good-bye to me.
It was a convocation.
It was him, seeking acknowledgement and permission, for his entrance, to the realm where he now resides.

Sorry to unload on 'ya folks. Thank You, for the safe venue SS,,seems to be an appropriate place to spool it out. This kind of stuff IS best digested around the table, with a good family and a great meal.

Perusing the family's journals the suggestion of pork pernil was made, which I had never heard of. I have been on a elimination diet for a few months now trying to figure out what the root of my digestive issues is. There seems many factors some related to the food others not so much.

Muscular interactions and emotional state, for me stress/anxiety I guess I would call it. Greasy/fatty foods also seems a trigger but I am hopeful to manage that by moderation and some supplements for galbladder health.

I reached a very low point at my last birthday on this, thats why the diet. The diet actually made the stress worse, trying to find anything to eat, then once reintroduction started trying to identify what did or did not cause an issue. Pork was one I triggered on but didnt really make sense because I've had these issues my whole life part of which was spent consuming non pork products from wendy's and taco bell (like the 90's).

So ...

Back to Pernil -
Why would I want to try this?

I am curious if marinated meat is easier for my system to digest. The deliciousness of @Gentlemancorpse 's lamb marinade makes his suggestion of pernil inevitable from a flavor standpoint alone. Pernil seems an acidic marinade with orange and lime in the one we are doing for tomorrow night (guy fieri food network) so maybe this will help to break it down. Previuosly I had bad reaction to slowcooker bbq pulled pork and chops (neither marinated overnight).

So I am hopeful the family will gather around and enjoy a nice meal with me.

Sounds like fun stuff!
Have you ever marinated red meat with yogurt? Easy to overdo.

Sorry to hear of gastro maladies.
Tough when food hurts. Should bring joy , nourishment.
Awful, when innocent gifts from the earth can move through a human like fire.
Celery, eggs, cows milk ,,,, even a strawberry can just wreck the right person.

slowcooker bbq pulled pork and chops
Of your making?
I don't accept many bbq challenges/offers.
Store bought bbq sauce is most likely just MSG and cornstarch ?
Hit that Tamarind directly, for some heritage flave.

I hope the pernil treats you well! It will most definitely be delicious no matter what. In a long line of delicious chunks of meat it's in the upper echelon of most delicious, at least in my book. I think there's some definite benefits over the other pork dishes you mentioned as well... BBQ sauce, while delicious, is very heavy on salt and sugar, often of the processed varieties unless you made it from scratch, and even then, it's been known to sit a little heavy (don't get me wrong, I'll straight up drink a good BBQ sauce, but I may regret it later)

The pernil is much brighter with all the citrus, fresh herbs and garlic.

View attachment 83916 paired with a awesome Stout...
12% 70IBU stout...its no joke...More an imperial eh.

This beer taught us that patience truly is a virtue. KBS is a big imperial stout brewed with a massive amount of coffee and chocolate and then bourbon barrel-aged to perfection. Incredibly silky and full-bodied with notes of vanilla, cocoa, roasted coffee and charred oak.
