Are there any computer/tech folks here?

It ain't me....that's for sure. Lookin for some guidance if at all possible.....

Scenario: I noticed my puter was runnin a bit slower.....then it started to have issues bootin' up. Kinda figured it was goin south.

So i took it to the local shop. Yup...hard drive was crashing. Got em to snag my data and slap it onto a external usb hard drive. Hard drive was removed from the machine. Here I set.

I looked at new computers but wasn't impressed. Decided to try to fix this box. Bought a new Samsung SSD drive to try to get this up and running again. Should show today....

Problem/challenge: I'm not sure if my OS (Win10) rode along with the data on the D/L....and I don't have a product code/disc in hand for a relaunch if it didn't. They definitely didn't set me up with a relaunch disc/etc. to go forward with.

Getting the drive back in is a no brainer......but I'm unsure what will happen from there. I can (I suspect) simply buy a copy of Win10 to install and get things to go...though I really don't want to (still $100+).... I hear that when you buy a puter your # is stored at Microshaft and I might be able to reload it without buying it.......but again...i don;t have it or know how to access the info if it is out there.....

Anybody have a clue here on how to get this box up and running?

In theory, since you only changed a hard drive, when you install win 10 and it goes online to activate it notices that your motherboard UUID is the same and activates the product for you.

You just need to make some installation media, you can use a usb drive for that.

The operating system (win10) would not have rode with the new drive. You will need to install an OS or use a boot disk/device of some sort to get yourself up and going again. Linux is always a free option if looking to get away from microshaft, hehe.

@dstroy0 is right, once Windows is reinstalled on the new drive (and internet connected) it should recognise your rig. The techs should not have backed up your OS with your data, that can cause problems. Any other Win10 computer (preferably with current updates) can make a backup you can use for reinstall or it can be downloaded using dstroy0's link by a Windows or Linux PC (I don't know about Chromebooks or Macs). Use a fresh USB and use it only for your Windows backup. You may want to wipe it then reinstall new backups after successfully installing major updates. I've had problems reinstalling from older sources.

If you can install an SSD, you can build your own rig waaay better and cheaper than most of those POS prebuilts out there. In the last 2-3 years AMD has made it super cheap to put together an extremely powerful system. If you have any questions about a new system I enjoy helping prople out with parts lists and I stay current on PC tech news.

I'm not a computer guy, but my buddy is. He does stuff over the phone all the time, walk you through it if you need such things.
Had him do my data reset etc when I had the same kinda deal. Went SSD with a 2nd reg disk drive backup with massive room. Lol.

+1

Also I'll provide a tip I use around operating systems, and installs. This is from years building, gaming, repairing.

I always keep c:\ as an OS drive, I add a drive D:\. If there is a prob at the OS, due to patching or anything else, can easily boot up with recovery media and mitigate. Keep my files/games/app installs here on D: also. This is usually a fast data access drive SSD etc. I run backups from this drive D:\ to my NAS or any other eternal or USB storage.

Were you ever able to get installation media? How old is the system itself? Any specs on it? Like Smith said cheaper to build, it's not like the old days where you had to set IRQ and DMA channels for your devices (conflicts sucked), or master slave switches on hard drives etc.. Everything now days is pretty plug n play.

Nah man....like I say....I've kinda just sat it aside. I can still access the Net on this old box...slower...but whatever.....and i'm doin lotsa other projects/etc. to pass the quarantine time that I ENJOY right now. This just isn't in that category...LOL. I should order a new Win10 disc/drive/etc.....but I hate giving the fuckers more $$$.
Likely gonna have to....I suspect.

Specs....um..... Dell 5759 touchscreen......goin' on 5 years old I think. i7 processor....was a 5400 SATA 1tb drive in it..... Wish I would have upgraded before I had serious issues. Looking back I now...I can see instances where I should have keyed in that there were problems. Something definitely changed a few weeks before it went South. Either way....when I get around to dealing with it I'll certainly ask for help. Right now I'm focused on getting this 5 month long bathroom remodel finished... right @JL2G ??? Heehee.
