Im looking to buy a good but affordable vaporizer. Im not talking about those little shit piles for flavored juices, I mean a real vaporizer like the "Volcano" or something along those lines.
I'd like mine to have a digital temp readout as well. What should I get and how much is it?

I said you might die.

I had a cousin from Ireland immigrate here about ten years ago. He had only ever been here in the Summer. He was moving to Grande Prairie. GP Wiki
It took a few of us family members working on him to get him to understand that over here, Winter kills.

You hit the ditch on a back road on a cold night and if you aren't prepared they will have to defrost you to fit you in your coffin.
(He listened and survived, married a Canadian girl and is the proud Da of a lovely little Irish Canuck lad.)

I had some chest congestion a while back and have managed to use that to switch to vaping almost exclusively for probably six weeks, give or take. I figured I'd give some thoughts on the devices I've been using.

Arizer Extreme Q: This now lives on my desk. Used with a bong and the remote control for the fan, it is awesome. Without the bong it great too, but a little rougher on the throat. Since it is full convection, it is a true "on-demand" unit. I can taste the terps for a lot more hits than with any of the conduction based vapes. The "elbow pack" method is ridiculously efficient. I just leave it on all day, generally set around 212C, so big clouds are always on the horizon. ;)

Boundless CFX: This unit is probably getting the second most use. One load of the big chamber gives two powerful 5 minute sessions (auto-off after five minutes). The first session has way more terps and larger clouds, but the second is still powerful. Usually set around 192-195C, it reaches temp in 20 seconds or less and gives a little buzz/vibe when it gets there. Easy to clean, especially after subbing in one of the Extreme Q basket filters for the OEM one. Charge by OEM adapter or micro-USB

Arizer Air Gen 1: I'm thinking this one is about six years old and has gotten a lot of use over that time. With swappable batteries and preloadable stems, it is the best road unit I've found. My next vape will likely be an Air Gen 2 or Arizer Solo Gen 2. (There are some great deals out there on Gen 1 units of Air and Solo, btw)

Dynavap: Still the hardest hitter of any vape I've used. Just holy shit! powerful. I use it often and love it, but due to the convenience of the Q, it's used less than the others. I want to DIY a conduction heater for it, but I have so many other projects on the list. Heaters can be DIY-ed for next to nothing but cost hundred$ to buy.

Xmax Starry 3.0: This is a good little vape. I just don't use it often because all the units ahead of it are better than good. It would be very handy in a prohibition area, due to its small size. It also has a swappable battery.

I know this thread is marked as answered but thought I'd share my experiences with some of these desktop devices.

Da Buddha Vaporizer - While I appreciate the simplicity of this device, it collects dust nowadays. My biggest issue is that there's a very fine line between not producing enough vapor and combustion. I feel like if I'm lucky, I hit the sweet spot and get a good vape. So many (too many) variables in getting it right (temperature, the strain itself, how hard it's packed, how much is packed) Overall this device was too inconsistent for me to use as a daily driver.

Dr. Dabber Switch - This is more of a concentrates device, though it can be used for dry herb (I don't intend on using it for dry herb). This to me is the perfect desktop vaporizer. Heats up instantly. Induction heating means no coils that need to be replaced (that's a HUGE advantage over the puffco peak IMO). Only cons are that it's big/bulky, and the glass attachments are awkward. I just ordered the whip attachment so I can hook it up to my own oil rigs, effectively turning the Switch into an e-nail. I'm so impressed with this product I plan on purchasing their smaller Boost EVO device for traveling.

Volcano - I don't own one, but some of my friends do and I've used it quite a bit. For dry herb there really isn't anything close to it, at least that I've tried. I actually get high from these balloons. Any other dry herb vaporizer I've used doesn't get me high. The terps are really really good, not as good as concentrates, but the best I've had for dry herb vaping. The DBV doesn't even come close to a volcano IMO. I plan on purchasing a Volcano in the future.

Mine is two feet away from my keyboard, and I might use it 3 or 4 times a year. It's fine, and I get high at a slight nudge past halfway on the setting knob. I figured it would be easier on the lungs, and it probably is. It just seems that I'm a neanderthal joint guy and the habit is real. Are there portable vape for flower?

There are portable pen style dry herb vaporizers. The PAX is the most well known I think. I own this one.

All of these pen style devices are going to have short battery life, and are a "load it at home, and use it once" kinda deal. Packing up another bowl on the go is a bit impractical IME, and a bowl won't be enough to pass around with a bunch of heads. It's definitely a personal device, not a party device. In this respect I think the distillate carts are the most pocket, on-the-go friendly. It's just I don't trust what people put in those carts. I'm hoping to graduate into making my own distillates in the future for the same reason I started growing my own, I grew tired of dealing with all the dipshit middlemen.

But i too am a neanderthal. There is something about a joint...

I smoked cigarettes from 13 until my mid 30's, so I've been off of them for over 15 years.

For weed, I've been a bong and pipe guy for a long time, and even though I knew I should switch completely to vapes, I never could.
If I can stick with vaping this time, I know my lungs will thank me.

There are still times I want to load up a big bowl, but they are becoming less. I still need to find something better for when I'm fishing, but for now, I'm making do.

Also, I said conduction heater in the previous post. I meant induction. D'oh!

The problem with a vape....the flavor becomes whatever temp you vape at...

Cookies tastes like chem tastes like punch...not 100% but not at all like a doob. That burns EVERY terp.

  • Caryophyllene oxide: 495°F / 257°C
  • Phytol: 399°F / 204°C
  • Humulene: 388°F / 198°C
  • Linalool: 388°F / 198°C
  • Terpinolene: 365°F / 185°C
  • Limonene: 349°F / 176°C
  • Citronellol: 437°F / 225°C
  • β-Myrcene: 334°F / 168°C
  • β-Caryophyllene: 320°F / 165°C
Cannabinoids:

  • THC: 315°F / 157°C
  • THCa: 220°F / 104°C
  • THCv: 428°F / 220°C
  • CBD: 356°F / 180°C
  • CBDa: 248°F / 120°C
  • CBC: 428°F / 220°C
  • CBG: 126°F / 52°C
  • CBN: 365°F / 185°C

A doob is a more well rounded flavor of the strain (full spectrum burning).

I do love the volcano....but i have to vape 2 bags before i vape 2 bags...and then i vape 2 more.
I use the whip on my Extreme Q. Bags don't do it for me either. Had this vape for years and probably haven't filled half a dozen bags, just straight through the bong to my brain. :)

Bags work man...I made 4 footers and its hard to get to the bottom of 1...but i will do 4.

:D I get super baked don't get me wrong. IT is just the flavor...

For example...sparrowhawks Goofy grape X LVTK...well holy shit i found the replacement for heisens punch....i am sick of punching everything and the bud mass was puny and weak...HULK was not happy

I grew sparrowhawks goofy grape X LVTK and it is crazy that williams wonder X Lavender can make that kind of GRAPE...and lavender..holy shit its good.

What was i saying...

It vapes like some generic weed...it smokes like a grape candy extravaganza.

I would rather die smoking tasty buds...but i am a balls to the wall person apparently. Amos was right too...the doob reigns supreme.

$42.95 and then $14.95 for new coils. I order 3 at a time which last me about a year.

Any 40+ watt battery. I set mine at 24 watts, 5 sec warm up and hit. I take it everywhere.

I use it at home as well and love it.
Last time we went camping I picked up this piece of wood under my chair

to scrape the bowl. When we got home our youngest wanted to learn golf so I took home to the range and we've played 36 holes of a local 3 par and took my vape (I didn't want to attract attention) and found a standard golf tee

I gotta take the paint off but this works like a charm.

The MIGHTY,

It is mighty fine. I use it for hash and for herb and my little metal screen thing for rosin is loaded full of rosin.

But i too am a neanderthal. There is something about a joint...
I agree. I know vape is better but damn, torching a fatty can taste so good and being an ex-smoker I do enjoy puffing one like it especially early morning with coffee?

I haven't needed to replace anything in over 6 months, not even batteries. I can't find a cheaper option.

I found these 5 for $12 single wire coil
20220911_112858.jpg
several years ago but I still haven't pressed anything and I don't visit dispensaries. I'm gonna make a lot of hash (I ❤ hash) this year and I'll press some. These are $12+ locally and work well for wax for cheap and on the go with pen size battery.
