Breeding, what's really involved?

If you breed for high THC and wanting to make something around 30% there's only a few strains that can produce that bloodline.

Chem D, GMO, Gorilla Glue, GSC and MAC 1 are what you would want to be working with to have a chance at breeding a 30% strain.

Bubblegum is around 14% THC , in my experience there's no amount of selecting/breeding to create a 30% bubblegum, landrace etc.

Too much focus is on the females, breeding is going to be limited by the male donor.

With most stuff being heavily inbred using some unrelated genetics is important. Using a landrace or even unrelated dutch/Spanish lines is a good to add vigor and terps.
Landrace by it self or 50% is usually not that great, usually weak and leafy.
The magic number for me is 1/4 to 1/8 landrace and 80 to 90% modern strain.

When someone says “S1s aren’t true,” what they usually mean is they’re not identical clones of the mother. Which is true. They’re not. But that doesn’t make them bad. S1s are made by splashing around in the same gene pool, so if you're starting out with a killer plant with great traits, the progeny will just be variations on that theme. You might get one that's a little less potent, a bit shorter, or has a piney lean. The genes are just pairing up in a different order than the mom and showing slight differences.

So while it’s fair to say S1s aren’t “true” in the clone sense, they still spit out good plants. You’re just seeing different arrangements of the same deck the mother was shuffling.

I've got a few posts about how genes pair up and express in crosses that can give more detail:

Is it a bad idea to use feminized plants for breeding?
Love this post above. You don't know me. But, thanks for that @Schwaggy P.

I just been getting my head around dialing regular selection using fem plants to pull more of the same trait combos within the same cultivar in reg lines. I used to think. "Fems are evil." "Most Fems herm on us."

I love growing regs to be honest. And chucking with regs so far, mostly. But properly tested stable parents, one reversed for a fem cross or 2 sisters against each other for a sideways S1ish. I have no problem as long as (just like always) parents are tested, seed tests- normal. Should be tested if sold as an F3or+ I think.

So many breeders just going one step out from an already tested clone only. Then everyone has Chimera and Devil Driver or Tangie and GDP some yrs back. Or NL and White Widow. Lol

Thanks for contributing to the knowledge and positivity on pHenohunters.

I like every single.one you listed. But still never tried Indiana Bubblegum cut or a X. Hmm. I don't know MAC1 very well, but all the other names get ne high as balls. Haha
(DiK in da durt)

I cannot keep up with strain names anymore. But a new love is GMO.
My buddy brought over some Triple Burger (I think gmo ix2 or something) lr 2 times and it was great! So I snagged some GMO cut flower (a whole gram for $10+tax). Damn spendy. But I wanted the real deal grown more craft than mechanically.
Loved it.

GG#4 is a fav. since 2015. And the power stone and earthy/heavy/poopy/chem terps on Chem D are legendary.

If GG#4, Forum or Plat. GSC or GMO or Chem D were 16% thc I'd still grow them. Maybe not the "D". Probably '91 or Chemsis instead. Liked the terps a bit better. With near the same stone.

All chatty, damn.
Have a good one legend.

have problems with S-1's - the next best thing to the original - a have always good results with S-1's have 2 packs of seeds one original one S-1's test grow coming

Ok I am not contributing to this really but for humor....breeding and genetics ...I am always confused and amazed when meeting a smoking hot women...I mean everything about about her is on point.....then, Ya meet the parents and siblings and they are all asemetrical and Totally unattractive ( bueutiy is in the eye of the beholder this is not to be about couples lol) ..and I think. Hhhmmn recessive gene? And how many generations would it take to reproduce this lol. I guess that's why, when I hunt, If I don't find it in like 50 plants....it's buried to deep...I don't have that many years left in my life ....ok.....just a little humor to the discussion....carry on folks. 😆..

So what you're saying is, some loads should just be swallowed ? ;)

I've actually pollinated an S1, and I knew the risks involved, but.... DAMN that plant was so good. I knew the recessive traits can come out, but, honestly, I'd rather see how it goes than let it deter me from something I love. I'm talking about Alpha Skunk Cheese. I know that one can hermie from stress already, but, with 5 females I kept, and the male I let go longer than I should have, I didn't notice any intersex traits, and I've now smoked an entire plant or two of the female without even one seed. I know the genetics I used were pretty darn stable though, so I'll go with that, given that I literally don't have the experience to say otherwise.
