Ever heard of Stack O Lee??

Ever heard any songs about him?
He was a "Mack", or pimp, back in the 1890s. (I've been listening to Too Sorry since the early 90s, and had no idea the term "Mack" was already 100 years old!)
((That's supposed to read "Too Short", but this sites editing sucks dirty bum balls in an alley. Fuck you, schizophrenic, random ass cursor!!! Fuck you up against the wall, with super glue, and handcuffs on!!!!))

(((If you get that last reference, you might have been in the same theatre, watching the same movie, in the early 90s...RIP Bernie Mac)))

Anyway, back to the thread... Stack-O-Lee, Stacker Lee, Stagger Lee, etc, depending on spelling, seems to be somewhat of a folk tale from the late 1890s.

Supposedly, he got into it with another possible pimp called Billy Lyons, and ended up killing him, in an old school style cowboy pimp shoot out. (Not really a shootout. Billy didn't shoot, that I'm aware of. More of a drunken murder by Stagger Lee)

Anyway, the point of the thread isn't really about either character, but more about the songs that have been made about the situation/legend.

I really find the songs interesting, for sure, and damn catchy, too.

If you've ever seen Black Snake Moan, you've seen and heard Samuel L Jackson sing a version of this song. There was also a version on the Death Proof soundtrack, from Quentin Tarantino, from around the same time period. (2007-2010ish)

Anyway, enough with the bollocks... Here's a couple versions for you to jam to

Damn, @Amos Otis , I thought I had some obscure references, but shit, bravo!!

I'm loving both videos right about now, thanks... Especially the second one... Is that Danzig doing spoken word poetry?? Lol

I don't believe for a second that you don't know of Nick Cave [and the Bad Seeds]. But just in case, his studio version of Stagger Lee was included in the release 'Murder Ballads', which, as you just saw, is not for delicate ears.

The showstopper is ' O'Malley's Bar '. I'll post in in the What Are You Listening To' thread here in a sec. This is a link to the entire cd.

Y'know, his name does sound familiar, but listening to him, isn't ringing any bells. Sounds like he could've easily been on the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack though. I can just picture Jack Skellington dancing through a graveyard, singing this tune lol

Just read an interview w/ Danny Elfman where he discussed how 'Nightmare' bombed when released, but after developing a rabid cult following, was re-released with full support from Disney and then did very well. Danny announced his 1st release in over 30 years, and though I loved OB, just don't have any interest.

Thanx for Stagger lee! I dig Nick Cave, but I've never seen a live show. I would like to hear a side project with, say, Nick cave paired up next to Tom Waites. I can damn near visualize that!!
