Everything & Anything - Coco Coir

I’d like to see what others growing in Coco Coir are adding or supplementing when mixing as well as Buffering, or even at flower top dressed.

I’m starting a new SynGanic Coco Coir Mix of my own design customized for differing cultivars based on their needs and preferences. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I foresee myself running some pretty impressive numbers soon, so I’ll be listening to anyone and everyone’s contributions as it’ll help me crop steer a lot faster.🏁

If I posted in the wrong sector all apologies! Old Man here just able to barely keep up with these newer boards and dumb phones- but I try🙏

Gypsum? Lime? Perlite or Pumice? Kelp - Help lol I can think of a lot of things but I’m honestly looking to read and see what others like to add and more..

Organic fertilizers often require time and CEC.
As the media's CEC increases so does its ability to interact with calcium and magnesium,,, Requiring further addition of these elements.
This is why it is challenging to build organic, water only soil.

"Supply Nutrients Through Fertilization

Although a soilless growing medium can have a reasonable CEC, it does not contribute much towards nutrient retention or prevention of pH change, unlike clay soil. If nutrients are needed, growers need to supply them through fertilization and not depend on the cation exchange sites."

Whay kind of media are you looking to build ?
What are your goals for the finished product?

Thank you Kindly for your contribution. 🙏

I’m looking to build a living based coco coir that will be supplemented with salt based nutrients to maintain the best of both worlds Synthetic/Organic wedlocking the two opposites so illusions disappear.

Naturally I’ll be buffering to start and then charging as well to ensure cations are holding the calcium necessary to take off smoothly while the organic begins to work its magic adding inoculates as we go.

I’ve always grown in straight coco I’ve rinsed, buffered and super charged never having much of any issues always keeping up with an old mentor in DWC he’s dialed in over 20 years now!

My goals are to truly maximize the potential for each side in order to set this apart from being just synthetic or just being a soiless organic coco mix. My goal as well will be to maximize production, quality while bringing each cultivar and individual phenos to their fullest of potential and expression inside as well as outside too next season.

I hope so too HBZ it’s been several years since I ran coco and my synganics in soil and soiless has rocked looking over my past few years of photos leading to my most current posted. 💫🙏💫

I wish my buddy would give me his soil mix. He has somehow grown for almost 20 now and has never used coco at all (i thought he did and stated as such somewhere here previously) and he grows what he calls "soilponics".

It's basically a Dutch bucket system as far as I can tell, 5gal fabric pots with a 3" net pot stuck down through the middle of it. That then gets filled with soil, and placed on top of a 5g square bucket with a hole in the lid that the net pots poke into.

Then just flood and drain, using salts (he uses the GH line, that much i do know.) But this is also just during flower; veg he grows soil but does DTW. Weird dude but hey it works for him.

I posted in another thread in diy asking red about using organics in their ebb/flow setup but definitely see the drawbacks he mentioned. So I'm really curious to see how this works. My own grow right now is coco loco and will be amending with just Dr earth dry nutes, and top dressing with same.

But I do have the gh line, so I think next run I'm gonna try my hand at hydro. Hell, maybe I'll just copy my boy and not change a damn thing other than where the nutes come from.

Following up - how did this go for you?

I have run some in coco, but never as a living soil. I would think the additional watering and coco's reduxed ability to hild nutrients (compared to soil) will make it challenging.

My experienxe has been it is really important to water coco until significant runoff to make sure it is completely soaked. If you are not running to runoff everytime, it will dry out on you quickly.

You could run a combo of soil and coco. I have read horror stories online about people struggling to stay on top of the PH. When I did combos, I never really ran into this issue.

Look forward to hearing what you have found in your adventure!
