First grow ever

Hey All,

So it was suggested that I keep a grow journal, which I had already been keeping notes, but I think actually posting the info here will give me the opportunity to learn from suggestions and observations. So here goes.

This is my first ever grow. The book I mention below is Jorge Cervantes growers bible that was lent to me by a friend.

What I'm working with:

  • * Citrus MILF femenized
  • * FF Bushdoctor coco loco
  • * GH Flora trio

  • * 3x3x6 CoolGrows tent
  • * Mars Hydro SP-150
  • * VIVOHOME 4" 203CFM inline Duct fan
  • * 3Gal fabric pots

Monday 2020-06-29
Put two Citrus MILF seeds in jiffy pods, distilled water. Heat sock next to the jiffy dome.

Friday 2020-07-03
The pod on the right has broke ground, just barely but it's started pushing through. Dome still on till the other pops through.
Changed my mind about leaving dome on, the book I'm reading said to take it off after the first seedling breaks ground.

Sunday 2020-07-05
The pod on the right had a root sticking out of the pod, so I decided to open the other and see what is going on, it looked like the tap root started coming out and just curled or whatever.
I up-potted them both into solo cups with coco loco, took the netting off the one on the right, and just took the left seed out of pod and planted in solo cup w/cocoloco taproot down. Watered both with distilled.

Thursday 2020-07-09
The seed that hadn't broke ground, broke ground like a little soldier.

20200709_131155.jpg

Saturday 2020-07-11
The slow seed popped it's top and shook it's hair out.

20200712_205805.jpg

I feel like I'm not watering them enough but I know over watering is the first newbie mistake. The soil seems moist (well it doesn't seem dry but I'm picturing dry as light colored and powdery like a dirt driveway) but I have only watered a couple times since they went into the solo cups. I also have zero experience growing anything so keep that in mind. I've also been battling heat this past week with the tent getting to 87F, but I moved the small fan I have inside the tent in front of the intake vent and have been keeping the exhaust fan on, which has been able to keep the temp close to 80F.

Any info on what I'm doing wrong, what I'm doing right, what to expect with Citrus MILF, what to expect with coco-loco and flora trio, anything, is greatly appreciated.

With the coco it is hard to over water but not sure about the coco loco if it is a blend or strait coco. They can go a fairly long time to start before watering . Once they start taking off they might need water everyday or every other day. There are two ways to tell if they need water weight of the pot or like you mentioned color of the coco. Your light is doing a great job keeping stretch to a minimum. Lot of current grows in the journal section featuring the Citrus MLIF. I have three of them currently in flower with two very different pheno's. Read all of the grow material you can get your hands on and ask a lot of questions here in your journal and your grow style will be a combination of all of the above. Looking great so far!

Also a GOOD piece of advice on the nutrients is less is better. The recommended dosage is almost always to much. If your plants are turning a lite shade of green you can up the feed some.

Welcome @Blackbeard ... everything looks great imo thus far... I like to stick my finger down in my coco about an inch or so to gauge how much moisture is left in the pot... I would also recommend getting a good feel for your containers when dry and immediately after watering... If I pick a plant up and its super light, I know its time to water... Less is more when it comes to Nutrients as Capt said... the recommended dosages are almost always too much... I always cut them in half, and just work on any deficiencies that pop up later on... Its easier to get an underfed plant back on track than an overfed one... Experience is your best friend. Plant more seeds, experiment, learn, and grow along with your plants. Glad to have you aboard!

Thank you, I'll have to look harder for those citrus milf journals. The bushdoctor coco-loco says it's triple washed coco with perlite, earthworm castings, bat guano, kelp meal, oyster shell and dolomite lime. I don't remember where I saw it but it was said to treat it as soil, and since these ingredients sound a lot like the "super soil" recipes I've seen on Youtube, it makes sense to treat it as soil and not plain coco.

Well you can over water and easily over feed a mix like that. Probably wont need any nutrients for a good while.

I'm not going to update everything I do, just big things I guess. I am keeping a spreadsheet of everything I do so that I have it though.
So I have nicknamed the little one Derpett because she looks derpy, and for some reason I've been calling the bigger one Betty, maybe I'm hoping she'll be a Big Betty with the Big Buds :D
Anyways they both got new shoes.

Thursday 2020-07-23, mixed first feeding, 1gal water, 3ml CaliMagic, 2ml micro, 1ml gro, 1ml bloom. Split half gal between the two, then fed the rest 2 days later. Still haven't seen any runoff. Also topped Betty and attempting to clone the top :D
They were both looking pretty sad, I have been dealing with some heat, and I think I said this before, but I think I'm underfeeding/watering them because I've read that all newbies over water. I checked them an hour after I watered them, and they both looked like they just woke, like I fed them coffee.
When I topped Betty I cut between the 3rd and 4th nodes and I trimmed the 1st node.

Sunday 2020-07-26, Topped Derpett with my fingers, which was like the 5th node, and trimmed the 1st derpy node.

Monday 2020-07-27, Mixed 2nd nute feeding, 1 gal water, 3ml CaliMagic, 4ml micro, 5ml gro, 1ml bloom. Watered the crap out of them... still no runoff.

Thursday 2020-07-30, Today, I'm going to give them the rest of the mix and then I'm thinking about giving them reg water till I see runoff. I've tried lifting the pots to see how they feel, but I can't tell yet by lifting. I DO water them both and make sure they feel even, so I know at least that they are getting the same amount. Sticking my finger in the soil is getting a little better with telling if they should be watered, but I'm watering like every 2nd or 3rd day, so it's going to feel the same. idk, I'm learning.

I will try and take a stab at this @Blackbeard . I am not sure on the coco loco but i think that has some nutrients already in it and if that is the case those plants should not need any feed at this point. Once you have a established root ball it is very hard to over water in coco. Water the girls when the pot feels really light and at that point water them enough were you have a good 20% runoff( do this every time). Once you finish watering lift the pot to see what a full pot feels like weight wise. You can observe the color of the coco if you like and when it starts to turn light brown feel the weight at that point and when its ready will feel feather light. Just guessing from the photo's that a pot and plant of that size could go 3-6 days between watering at that transplant age. Once you have a good established root ball you can irrigate coco daily. If you continue on the same path you could be asking for lock out issues or even worse. Luckily they look great and will be fine with the proper care. The plant will go much longer than you think on watering always it seems.

Hey All,

So after watering them till I saw runoff, I can now definitely tell by weight when they need water. I wish I had done that in the beginning. Been giving plain water.

Couple questions I have are, should I trim the larger fan leaves that cover the center, the ones I can't tuck under lower growth?

And they are at 38 days from seed and I'm starting to get nervous about height limits, because these girls are starting to hit a growth spurt or something. I have started trying to low stress train Betty, but this twist tie stuff slides down the branch and I'm having a time trying to tie down this thing and not be too rough. The question is once I flip to flower, how tall will these MILFs get? The general information is that cannabis doubles height during flower, and if that's the case I'm thinking I need to flip probably in the next couple weeks the way they're growing. Also when would you start thinking about flipping?

Anyway here are some pics from yesterday 2020-08-05

Whats your tents height? Mines just under 7 feet, So with lights i figure 6 foot I vegged mine till they were AROUND.. 1.5-1.75 Feet then flipped, and holy shit if i would have waited any longer.. There stretching fast and i'm having to move the light UP almost every other day to prevent heat stress.

Your plants look fantastic btw! :D

I can’t believe you are still only watering. Cool!
One thing I’d recommend tho is getting shit figured out feeding wise before you flip. What I’m trying to say is I fear halfways through the stretch they will start using up everything and needing more. So do watch for yellowing and deficiency and ease em on to some ferts as soon as you see any signs.
I want you to yield real fat my friend.
Try tapering up some fertilizer in your feeds soon and ease off when you see any tip burn. Get em used to plenty of fertilizer. I try to have round 1500ppm coming out the runoff in coco. My last coco round I did very well feeding round 1200ppm at very most.
Your medium is different tho. (Seems like cool stuff) I’m guessing you won’t want to feed quite that much. Maybe like 750-1000 max depending on how much the plants have used up from what’s in the loco coco sh!t there ?. Wait.. do you have a ph/ppm pen thing? Grab one off amazon cheap if not. It’s really all you need to know what’s up beside just looking at leaves and sh!t.
Grow is lookin sweeet mang ?
Oh ya. Some good advice I got once.
“Don’t put that waterin can of yers to anything that ain’t quite dry, and that you don’t plan on watering to run off.. ya ol sunbitcsh!”
I see you’ve been given similar advice already. Just doubling up on that good sh!t

Like boobies!? ? I hope that’s what occupying your time my friend
Unfortunately only plant boobies. ???
Lots of plant boobies though. Ahahahaha.
Restoring the Cruiser to Tip Top shape has been what's occupying my time these days.
Apologies @Blackbeard for the thread HiJack, I'll get things back on track now. Lol.
The Milf's in my experience have had maybe a 50 to 75% stretch from flip. I've only grown a handful from seed, but they've all been very similar in heights.
Tallest one was only about 3 ft tall, but she was also 3 ft around. Lmfao.
I have noticed as well that they've all gotten a mid flower hunger when they start stacking, like voracious type hunger. Lol.
I'd recommend keeping an eye out for that hunger and feed accordingly.
I'm organic, so I typically have been top dressing the soil about the 2nd to 3rd week in flower with them and it's made a big difference in my case.
And by weight is my MO too, when they get too big to lift the pot I do the finger in the soil trick.
If it's not damp an inch down they get watered.
And 87 for temps isn't bad with led imho. As long as you've got a bit of RH to go with it they'll take it fine, just drink alot more.
My rooms have been hitting high 80's to low 90's every day since summer started. As long as I keep em watered they've been handling it just fine. A few issues I can see from the heat, but overall they're fine with it.
I'd just work with it if ya can't change it.
And just fyi, if they're drinking lots and lots from heat and getting any burn, lower the nutes a bit so their over all intake stays in a good spot. The less they're drinking the higher the nute levels can be, the more they drink the lower it should be imho.
Whether they're a fast eater or a slow eater the total feed should end up the same if that makes sense?
Just my two cents on dealing with plants in a heatwave. Lol
