Golden Tiger 3rd Version grow

I just received these and some Gnome Automatics freebies today. They took just two days to arrive - I've had great luck with seeds this month.

... So I put one seed in 1/2 pint pot of Happy Frog and will be adding a clone of each seed to my new clone tree until I know which gal is the keeper. Growing these one at a time is going to take at least 2 years if not longer. Unless, of course, the first plant is so awesome I don't need to grow the others out. That would be awesome...

They say to put them on flower early, but I'm going to try a SCROG grow this time. I'll probably stick it in a 20 gallon pot so's I can grow a monster.

When I read Ace's description of this strain, I got really excited!

Product Description

Since the arrival of Golden Tiger more than a decade ago, many growers have contacted us requesting a version of this devastating sativa hybrid with stronger Thai influence.

To achieve this, we have introduced the new and excellent Thai Chiang Mai (Thai sativa that had not been used in the previous breeding of Golden Tiger, and that is producing excellent results in all the breeding projects in which it is being involved) into the breeding with Malawi, producing a new, third version of Golden Tiger (Thai/Malawi) as a result, where the influence of the Thai genetics dominates over Malawi.

This translates into a more cerebral, cleaner high and less heavy body effects within the trippy and devastating psychoactivity of these extremely potent sativas from Malawi and Thailand. The greater Thai influence also implies less dense floral structures and slightly longer flowering times, although this 3rd version continues to offer the usual extreme effects and yields of our Golden Tiger.

Nice, man, good luck finding a keeper quick!
I grew out a pack of V2 (I believe) regs a few years ago, looking for the legendary Tiger high I'd read so much about.
I ended up losing the cuts, but made some unintentional S1s and crosses while I had them. The batch I had seemed to be pretty sensitive to stress, and would herm out if tested. Some of the male flowers formed down low where light was weakest, due to a crap dimmer. The largest cluster though, was formed around a top cola where I had to supercrop so she didn't hit the ceiling. That cluster literally looked like a miniature banana tree. The biggest cluster of herm flowers I've ever seen. I'm sure you already know about the possibilities of herms, if you've researched the strain, just thought I'd give you some anecdotal experience.
I'm actually running some of the S1s and crosses I made now, just to see how they turn out.
So far, I've had to remove 1 S1 from flower because she started showing nuts. They've been pissed at me for a minute though, so I'm not super surprised there's a herm. They've got their reasons lol
I'm pretty excited to see how yours turn out, so I'll keep an eye here for the next few months.

Keep me posted on your successes with the S1s. I doubt if I'll cross this with anything /because/ it's F1, but if I really like it, maybe... In a few months I'm going to start another open-pollination project with Molokai Frost. I'm tired of all the stuff I tried. Most of it is lacking, and after smoking for two weeks all of it just quits working. I can't even get a decent high from hash oil. So I'm going to be looking into landrace sativas for awhile.

She sprouted yesterday. That's 4 days in the soil. I put her in a 20 gallon buildasoil living soil pot (just a plastic pot) and noticed that she already had enough roots to hold the soil together. So she must have sprouted right away.

It's under an "ok" MarsHydro light but I have a better light that should be available by the time she goes into flowering.

20220426_132750.jpg

Not that this light sucks - I've flowered a few plants under it with good results.

I recently grew a Zsweet Inzanity clone in a 20 gallon pot using nutes. My harvest was a dismal (for the strain) 2.5 oz of top shelf and a five gallon bucket full of leftovers that made a few grams of excellent hash oil. If I had taken my time I think I would have less hash oil and maybe 4 oz of good bud. But you get the point - I should have harvested at least 10 ounces of top shelf.

That was my first experience with an insanely vigorous strain with very weak branches. My mistake was not running it as a ScroG grow. So this grow will be a ScroG.

rice hulls! cool! i mixed them with turface 50/50. worked great!

they have the highest silica content in the plant world. almost 20%.

i'm don't think that it is plant available though.

i want some of that golden tire!

just messin' with you!

it would be nice to have some trip weed in the stable.

the trippiest weed i've ever had was from an old rasta in Christiansted, St Croix. he said he got the seeds from africa.

i got a dime bag for 20 bucks. lol

The best high I ever got was in high school at a basketball game, '79 or' 80. The visiting team was smoking a doob at halftime but wouldn't share. So I grabbed the roach when they tossed it. They went on to win the game, but I was too wasted to go back in and spent the next two hours tripping and laughing with a friend of mine. We suspected we smoked the fabled Thai Stick but I don't know...

Rice hulls are awesome for mulch and drainage, but yeah I was hoping they'd provide a derivative silica source as well.

If you were local I'd be happy to share!

diatomaceous earth is plant available. i've been using it as part of a topping for perlite. i see you using rice hulls alone and, like perlite, it is a little too airy. rice hulls have an air-filled porosity of over 40%. it lets water vapor escape too fast. this in turn causes rapid dry-down of the media and rapid ph swings in the media.

i am mixing 5 parts vermiculite to one part DE and applying it as a top dressing.

i was mixing 5 parts worm castings into this topping as well but now i intend to mix it throughout the perlite media before loading the container and then putting the vermiculite/DE topping on. about 3/8" and then watering it in.

this is to keep the worm castings from drying before use and killing the micro herd.

rice hulls and perlite are interchangeable, they have almost identical mechanical properties in regard to container hydraulics.

I'm not using rice hulls alone. Just using them for mulch and adding to a mix that already has perlite. I'm really liking rice hulls for their dominance over fungus gnats. I also have it mixed into half-composted chicken poop for better airflow.

sorry for my misunderstanding. i saw the photo with the single seedling and it looked like straight rice hulls.

the DE topdressing stops fungus gnats if applied initially.

i didn't see a single gnat or any other bugs in my last grow using DE.

No offense taken! ? If I was trying to grow in pure rice hulls I'd definitely want the warning.

Gnats is why I started using it. I always had a few buzzing around, but when a couple of pots got really infested I started using it and poof! Down to zero gnats almost instantly (ok I'm exaggerating a little, but it was pretty amazing). I admit I occasionally see them, but now it's just frustrated gnats from outside trying to get in.

I wanted to try it a long time ago but it's pretty pricey. I found a good deal on 40# so now I use it a lot.

She's still doing well. I moved some plants around in the main flowering shed and freed up a better light - The Optic II Gen4. I'll be able to give her more heat, intensity and penetration - something I'll need to maximize this grow.

I have grown a couple of pure sativa landraces in the past and haven't had problems keeping them short with one exception. That exception was a Chick Magnet grow, which I learned from.

I have been researching it extensively, and most of the advice I've found online doesn't pass the smell test. 12/12 from seed, small pots to control size especially. I think trying to turn sativas into indicas would cause reduced yields over trying to get maximum biomass in veg and a maximum number of colas. I don't think I'll use all of the height available but with this light I may.

The light is currently at about 60% and about 29". I'll keep lowering it or raising power output until she tells me to stop. As I said before, this is a SCROG grow. I will completely fill the 3x3 space with a flat, dense canopy and let the colas extend for a foot or so before flipping to flower, which will be a 10/14 schedule as most recommend. If past experience is any indicator, I won't have a height problem but if I do I have a strategy to deal with it. I'm hoping for 18" buds but can go to 24" or a little more which is all I can expect the light to penetrate adequately.
