I love learning, especially in regards to self improvement and becoming a better person. Our life experiences and communications with others influence our beliefs and shape who we are. One of the things I love the most about pH and our community is the interaction amongst various backgrounds and beliefs. We’ve connected through a common denominator and branched out in discussions about other topics which have been for the most part very enriching for me. I’d like to share an article that I stumbled upon while looking to find a deeper understanding of a certain topic. Although the site name carries the connotation of “Business Office Workshop,” the article is actually quite enlightening and worth the read. I’ve also included a sub link within the article. Both are fairly short reads.

Spy, I enjoyed reading, and reflecting on both of those writings.

The first one had me chuckling.
"Can you win an argument with a three year old ?"
Go ahead - try every tactic in the book. You can outwit them, outsmart them, dress them up with facts, dress them down with threats.
They still know you are wrong, and the moment you turn your back- they will prove it. ?

The second link alludes to the pitfalls of pride.
Pride is a tricky one
Duplicity
If I can acknowledge "bad" pride, then surely there must exist a "good" pride.

Self centred vs selfless
Righteous vs unrighteous
productive vs unproductive

Here is a gooder,,,
you ever been killing time, staring at one of those donor plaque walls?
Corporations, politicians, associations, businesses individuals,,, everyone wants to see their name in lights
everybody wants to play the lead

And where do you find the "anonymous" plaques ?
Way down there, on the right hand side, at the bottom.
They are not the 'diamond' contributors.
Just everyday folk, signing off their estates, in hopes of making the world a better place.

Selfpromoting pride
vs
Pride in self awareness

These are some illustrations of why I believe that humans can’t (in our current state of consciousness) understand a concept if there isn’t a polar opposite.

Very well said my friend. Also another reason why “participation trophies” don’t do any good for our kids these days. The true meaning of accomplishment or achievement is how you perceive it, not how it’s cheaply and “falsely advertised” to others for the sake of serving fragile egos.

Because it is MY perception, and I need perspective.

A comparison, to make things relative to my understanding.

If I am totally lost in a complex math problem sometimes I need to plot a course on a number-line. Which side of zero am I on?
Am I approaching zero or moving further away ?

Perspective is great; if you draw a 9 on a piece of paper and put it on a table with two people sitting across from each other, you ask them "what do you see?" And they can sit and argue all day on if it's a 6 or a 9, and since they're both right technically you decide when to flip the paper. Once they see each other's side they don't argue. Good lesson there.

Now to keep with Perspective, a man who has sex 59 times a day, you may think "why is he mad????" But if you find out he's in prison.... then you don't need to see quite so much of his "Perspective" to understand instantly.

Lol needless to say my blend of Blue Cheese X Blueberry Muffin and Chem D is excellent! Hahaha. :)

As a volunteer that has passed out numerous medals and awards, I find the blaming of the participation trophy these days a little confusing.

If we're going to blame something, shouldn't it be the all the rec sports directors and volunteer coaches that hand them out?

Or maybe it's parenting?

I find it hard to believe that I can completely undue years of quality parenting with a medal and a, "Good job Kyle', or a 'Great season, Sara!"

Nothing personal @spyralout , I just don't agree.

I see your point. I’m coming from a point of view that the competitive nature seems to get taken out of the equation or it may be less of an incentive to strive and achieve better if everyone gets an award. It doesn’t take away from parenting, however one wants to do it.

Great topic Spy. Righteousness is an important subject to investigate as individuals. It seems that we’ve all been offered up an endless buffet of opportunities to feed our sense of righteousness over the last handful of years. I am hopeful that people are taking the opportunity to recognize that whatever we heap on our plates is not serving us and has little opportunity to improve our connections to the community. The sticky bit about righteousness seems to be that we can pretty much only apply it to ourselves. The minute we start to look at someone else’s righteousness we fall into the trap ourselves.

Best wishes to all. I think topics like this can provide the space for us to close some of the schism that has been growing within society as a whole.

Thanks for taking the time to read the article and for your feedback. I’m constantly looking in the mirror, self reflecting, especially in regards to topics like this.

I agree with your thoughts. Often times there’s an elephant in the room, or even several, that take up all of that space, not allowing room for growth.

Right on bud.

For the record, I did read the first article and skimmed the second. I've been consciously working on my self righteousness for a couple years. For me, waiting a day(not reflexing) to reply to someone I disagree with has been the most beneficial. I find 9 times out of 10, I end up not replying at all.

I'm unpolarized lol,, i frequently enjoy a argument with myself.
I'm opinionated and don't give a rip , this forum has helped me with much needed people skills cause I have very little patience for stupidity.
I was just thinking I should stray far from this thread.
Ahh ok I was a bit confused cuz I didn’t see you post anything. All good my friend. We all come from different backgrounds. One of the great things about our community is we can, for the most part, have such discussions constructively and productively. If ppl end up disagreeing that’s OK! We can’t always be on the same wavelength. As long as we just take it for what it is, a discussion, and not get butt hurt over someone else’s opinions, we’re pretty much good to go. As long as the topics aren’t straight up Politics or Religion (they tend to divide ppl and can cause a whole lot of animosity more so than other subjects). Glad to hear our forum has helped w the ppl skills ?

Good read for sure! I've been working on my humility for decades with some success, but when so many people refuse to act civilized, I have a reflex, I simply refuse to argue ?
