How do you treat your "mom"?

Your mom, do ya treat her good or beat her down like a dog?
Do ya give her a nice place to live or does she have to fend for herself?
How long does she generally last before needing to be replaced?
Do ya feed her what she needs or barely let her survive? Lol
I gotta start keeping a couple moms around now for breeding and need the process.

I like to give my mommas big ass containers and reused soil with nothing added in except maybe some castings.

10-15 gallons work best for me. Usually that will get me 4-6months of veg from a cloned momma. Then she gets put out of her misery to be replaced by a fresher mama.

Also keeping donor plants healthy is key to healthy cuts in my humble opinion.

1. Both ( not on purpose lol )
2. I keep the moms in good spot in the garden it’s just I have so many pheno’s it’s like a over crowded orgy
3. I do a weekly topping of the plants and try to even LST the plants branches with 90 degree elbows as often as I can. If they are worthy of using for flower, he’ll yah but if they are way to stretchy and root stressed I’ll just use the mom on last cutting as a fail safe than kill em after that.
4. I feed all my veg room plants 20-20-20 and weekly teas with misc goodies. Now the known plants that will be using for full cycle I apply worm castings, multi spectrum bacteria in every transplant and every 2 weeks and terp tea line drench and tea brewed every 1-2 weeks.
i foliar spray every 3-21 days a combo of bio fungicide/pest control with compost teas and misc goodies

another bonus is I use worm castings for the retaining element but the ph stability and also bacteria and h mile benefits ( can’t beat that nlack gold)

Extra info:
size of moms = 3-5ft before killing if seeing they aren’t worthy of flower room and I use only 1-3 gal even thou I’m hand watering in there . Once plants are a few months old in a 1 gal u gotta water multi times cause they become 99% roots and super light, I will even put trays on the flood table and let em soak for a lil bit a few time a week

if I had more room i would up pot my moms to 5-20 gal coco vs 1-3 gal ( most of the time if it’s not a long season I stick with 1 gal to get as many moms in the table I can lol)

it depends which mom... but mostly moms and dads are in solo cups. Take ECSD for example.........I took a cut last year and ran that outdoors, I also made a new cut for the mom. That cut has been in that cup for coming up on a year. Now that plant made more weed outside than I can smoke...so, I'm not running ECSD in my tents since I am flush. But....I will take a couple cuts of that plant soon...one for planting outdoors and one to be the new mom. Works for me and on a 4' shelf under household leds, I can keep a shitload of moms/dads.
I want my moms to be alive but putting them in a spot that encourages growth is not what I am after. They are quite easy to keep, and I usually flower even the old moms. Spring.....brings spring cleaning and many of these will give up a new cut and go outside in the rhododendrons. :)

I like this idea. So let’s say you take your two cuts, on for the grow, one for the new mom…How long do you find that you can keep the new mom before you need to replace it? How tall do they get?

Females can survive for at least a year. May need some trimming depending on "what" it happens to be. Males are a bit tougher....like 6-8 months. On average they all are about 8"-12" on the shelf. That shelf is 16" down from the ceiling for reference.
You can keep old friends around for a long time like this!

This is my weak point as well. I have never had a place to keep a mom until now.

Isn't this the plot for the movie Psycho ? LOL :)

So, for a mom, I am just starting to..... for lack of better words, grow Cannabis properly and actually have SOME idea of WTF I'm doing, so I'll be Honest here:

My growing started not that long ago, and last season was my third season, and as my first season using actual seedlings. My first year growing was all clones, and my second year growing was all clones again except for like a single seedling that I had finally gotten to sprout and not die because of incompetence on my part, so this passed season I started lots of seedlings. I did still have clones (Soon to be Father in Law gave me a clone of Cactido, and a clone of Bubblegum) and I said he could take clones off my Strawberry Diesel Seedling, my Hawaiian Sunshine Seedling, and I let him pull one off my Skywalker for his buddy that he had been buying clones from for years.

when I finally had my Blue Cheese Seedlings sprouted, out of 4 plants, two were male and had to go to the fire pit since it's always ladies night in the garden, but out of those two females, I got my "Big Momma Cheese" and "Sister Seedling" (Little names I gave them; Big Momma Cheese was the first one to get big enough to pull some clones from, and she ended up being the super Skunky sour Cheese and Cat Piss smelling pheno, and the sister is the floral and sweet but spicy tasting one) and I used Momma Cheese as the Mother for clones.

I did let him take a Blue Cheese clone, but then he wanted to give away a bunch of the clones to a friend of his, including the Blue Cheese one, and I was like "Oh fucking no..... I'll put it outside with the rest" so I stuck it outside and let it ride LOL.

The Mom and the "Sister" both were VERY nice plants; Looked like a Christmas Tree, smelled wonderful, and produced VERY well. I'd be out in the garden dragging gallons of water and nutes around and talking to them like "Hey pretty girl :) " LOL.

The Indoor tents were going to be shut down though so I couldn't "keep her as a Mom" but I've gotten enough seeds from the buds to start them up again at least :)

So I treated her well until October, and then it was Bates Motel time basically.

? Guy Fire-y ?
I kept 3 moms for the first time this past fall/winter. Made only 2 cuts from one and I treated them all well but very lite on the nutes in coco coir so they didn't grow into monsters. They were fine until they outgrew their area and I had to take them down as I needed the space for this years grows. I plan on actually using them this year?

Ok folks, how do ya get maximum cuts from a mom multiple times?
In a hypothetical of say oh 10,000 clones a month how many moms are ya gonna need?
the issue with ur question on doing clones from same moms, as long as the stress isn’t too high a healthy mom is the key and I’ve seen many crews they will instead of topping take clippings weekly even if they don’t use it. Key with getting a very bushy, lots of tops plant for a mom so you can take shit tons of worthy clippings is topping/taking clones weekly and having larger than a normal indoor plant to be able to do it. I can have plants that are 1-3 gal in coco for 6+ months and take clones no problem. Key is when they start being too tall even when topped I will just make a new mom of same clone it’s replacement.

moms wise to get 10k I would say you would need 10-20+ big gals (prolly 25 gal+ containers )

if needing 10k in clones for grow = clippings = 20-40k , after rooted and planted in next stage = 15k-25k

I would make sure to have double for clippings at least since you want even if same pheno the finest and most vigorous and happy version. if you have the space and plant count i would always use the energy to make sure your cycle has the best of quality .

plus who’s to say you are doing 1-10 strains and a few of them show being runty/shitty . Than you can easily exp if u kept the spares in veg room to even kill the plants that are shitty to be replaced. Once I started having that fail/safe I didn’t have to be hit by such obvious failure spot cause I was relying on the exact plants I had in room and didn’t have anymore. Another factor is people will also over feed their moms and that promotes the clones to not root as easy and take longer, just like too might light when not rooted

if get the time, effort and space sounds a huge con to many but if u are growing a lot and doing clones that’s the main way I see people do their nursery , it’s just such a big factor if you get a big % of plants that are not desirable or not as a worthy. My 2 cents

Thanks @BH for your input!!
I 've been doin a bunch of research and most of what ya said is there. The 25 gallons for big moms sounds better than the 15's I was gonna use.
We have "lots" of space, today we are gonna bust the bank account to get every other little thing we need.
