If I were you I’d go with a tube combo. Who wants to lug around a half stack and they take up so much space 40 or 50 watts of tube is plenty of gas. Marshall or Mesa for the win.

DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp: https://smart.link/9wlw0d6aupx7o?producturl=/Marshall/DSL40CR-40W-1x12-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp.gc
I would likely do that now. I could never get the stock gain to be enough on a Fender twin. The only Marshall I've ever owned is that little mini belt clip on which was surprisingly damn good for what it was. I've used it as "the pedal" before.

I've played a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier (2 different sets, with different tubes I think 12AX and EL34, if I remember right) and it was too muddy for me. I've heard GREAT things about Mesa Boogie, but I've never found one that had the sound I like. Nothing gets that British style distortion like a Marshall though. I'm looking for plug n play KACHUNK - think Zakk Wylde.

Then go Marshall with a boss super overdrive pedal. I run a POD xt live which I dig for the versatility of tones and ability to get decent guitar sounds in my studio cans with no actual volume. I can jam while the kids are asleep!

I'll check it out. Maybe find a deal on used, I am not some badass player, and it's been YEARS. I just tinker like everything else lol. Never tried a Boss pedal, always got the Digitech, cuz I was a broke young'n that had to scrape for that pedal that I ended up lending out and never getting back. I remember cringing buying new strings if the old set hadn't broken, because there was always that chance that the new set (while sounding oh so crisp n clean) would break then I'd have to mix n match and get an inconsistent sound of old n new strings lol

The gain channel out of most cabs with zakk's overdrive pedal produces some pretty good tone, especially if like to play with harmonics

The boss metal zone is a badass distortion pedal, many tones can be had with some tweaking

Artificial harmonics were cool, we used to call em "chirps." Those were the whammy bar days lol. Then stop to retune every few min  nobody could afford a floyd rose lol.

I didn't know zakk had a pedal, nice. I'm sure there are TONS of things available now, I missed over 20 years of progress lol. I remember reading back in the early 90s when zakk was playing for ozzy, that he preferred straight plug n play into JCM800(?) - I never got to play one with gain, just clean (and that clean was CRYSTAL). The older Line 6 has a modeling software built in that is quite amazing. The dual recitifier (among others on it) is the closest I've seen to the amps it emulates and can be bought for pennies on the dollar now. I bought a Line 6 Flextone II XL (100W 2-12" combo) for $90 and only one channel worked. I went on fleabay and bought the amps for $12 for the pair and resoldered them for what is now basically a brand new amp. Ive played a lot of rigs over the years and the bang for buck on this thing amp is in a class of its own. You can also go on the web and download new amp modeling software for free. The ONLY grumble I have about the amp is the ergonomics of the controls. They are locatedd on the top of the amp in a manner that you have to be right on top of it to adjust any parameters. Woulda been much nicer if they were face mounted.

Yeah, you need max gain to get those pinch harmonics going!

Back in the day I had the Metal Zone, razor sharp metal tones all day!

oh man you really got me interested, that is VERY affordable, and I get the options of trying different amps? I knew there had to be some sorta emulator or smth now, but I figured they'd be at least as much as rack effects cost back in the day. LIFE HAX GUITAR EDITION :punkrocker:

That amp is kinda old now, wanna say like 2010-ish when it came out , but theres a huge book that shows all the modeling it is capable of and includes a bunch of folks like zak, disturbed, and a bunch of others as well as tweed combos/british/fuzz/blues/clean etc. Possibilities are endless and the amp cranks too! I love it.

I will look and see if I can find one.

Gotta ask - is there a chinese knockoff? ?

Any of you pickers ever played a Zager 'easy play' guitar? I've been looking at them for years, and with a full guarantee and shipping both ways, and some accumulated bean cash, am about to give 'em a shot.

Never heard of it til now, but Im intrigued. I couldnt find what seperates it from the comparable makes/models they listed. They boast the better playability, but fail to mention what makes it more playable (action/tone/scale/fret height etc)

OK, who's actually bought a Carvin lol? That one piece body/neck (no bolt on) always intrigued me. The claim was longer sustain.
I just dont buy the longer sustain. I had a Gibson Explorer in my Metallica wannabe days, and the sustain was that of any bolt on neck. A hot pickup will do far more than a solid neck in my experience.
