Instruments - What do you play?

I need me a new pedal. Debating between sonor perfect balance and DW 5000. I have an old pearl double and that Gibraltar single. Don’t overly love either. I can play fast bass notes
If youd like but never was into the stick tricks. Always thought they were a bit.. Much
Anyways playing as many notes as you can quickly isn’t always what’s called for but it sure is fun. I’m more about this vibe here

I’d sure be open to posting little drumming clips if it wouldn’t annoy y’all. We could see who can write the sickest guitar riff to the beat. Winner gets a prize. Could be fun

How fun that must be to pound on those drums! Are neighbors an issue?

That could be fun to try a community jam if we could figure it out. To me it’s more about the groove than a riff, I wonder if we could find common ground…

How are you recording your tracks?

It sure is fun. I have things dampened down with the odd cotton ball inside resting on the resonant head. Shortens the sustain or “ringing on”. I have clear Aquarian heads on my toms that have black rings around the edges. Not the most dead/flat, just cuts a bit of high end. Then studio ring on each drum. My cymbals are a bit smaller than conventional and also thin.
13 inch k hats (most folks play 14-16 inch)
18 inch k crash/ride (in a bigger space id be using a 22-24 inch K light ride)
15 inch A avendis thin crash. (An homage to the 50’s cymbals)
Taking these measures and hanging some blankets and it’s not even loud outside that room. Do keep in mind in nothern Canada we build house a bit different. If you have less than 6 inch thick, heavy duty insulation and triple pane windows you are a cold peasant.
I just record for my purposes on a new iphone on the garage band app. But my other half of a long standing musical duo (he lives 3 hours away no big deal) has a fairly pro music studio in the basement. He’s got a classic Rhodes and vox amps and an array on beautiful Fenders and others. All the boxes and wires and computer shit that confuses me as well. Couple industry standard mics. One very expensive condenser mic I chipped in for a decade ago. We only recently started playing together again after couple year hiatus. Working on 10. Got 5 mostly done being written. Next time I visit we are going to try and get 1 song done at least to punch ups and do that once a month. That way we won’t take 5 years to finish it. It will most likely be on YouTube for free. ?

You are lucky, drums in my urban setting can be a challenge, even for just a jam.

I have not done a heck of a lot of recording either, played with GarageBand for awhile which is kinda fun but I have been starting to consider buying Logic Pro X, got time to figure it out these days. I am still contemplating.

You ever play out anymore? Moving drums around will keep you in shape.

That’s too bad. Maybe you should snag a deal on an electronic kit. They aren’t quite the same but the quiet practice is awesome.
I haven’t played out in years. I’ll be lugging em south soon tho.

Check out "Audacity". Its a free program that does the same stuff as the paid for programs. You hunt down your favorite plug-ins to make your experience even better and custom tailor your DAW....all for free. I gave up Fruity Loops XXL Producers Edition when it comes to mixing/mastering and recording to use Audacity for those tasks.

I just had a plumber come out to install new water heater lines. Young guy, maybe 28 or so. The hacienda reeks of weed, of course, and there's no way to mask it, so I just toke up and offer it up. He declined, but said he'd love to pick a little on the Martin acoustic, and he was pretty good. I laid down my 'interpretation' of "Polk Salad Annie" by Tony Joe White, and he dug it. Said he remembered his granddaddy playing the 45 when he was a toddler.

I have heard many good things about Audacity. I should take another look at it. Have you ever used it to sweeten audio tracks on a video?

I was thinking Logic since I already have Final Cut Pro for video, they should play well together. Seems like what I would mostly be doing is messing with video clips.

I am still not sure how much I would use it, I have not been totally pleased with a recording yet. Always sounds better in my mind.

Sorry, I have zero experience with video files on Audacity. I know theres not much you CANT do with it. Considering its free its def worth a shot.

I looked at Audacity, you are right, for free it looks great. I then went to look at Logic & Apple has just made their free trial good for 90 days because of the pandemic. 90 days...heck I will be bored with it by then. Logic has some outstanding features....pitch correction sounds interesting, wonder how well it works.

Now to figure it out. Or not. More fun to play than record. :D

What are you running for preamps/AD conversion? I’ve been looking at maybe grabbing a Presonus unit, good bang for your buck.

If I were you I’d go with a tube combo. Who wants to lug around a half stack and they take up so much space 40 or 50 watts of tube is plenty of gas. Marshall or Mesa for the win.

DSL40CR 40W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp: https://smart.link/9wlw0d6aupx7o?producturl=/Marshall/DSL40CR-40W-1x12-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp.gc
Honestly my hand wired ac15 was super loud and more than enough for bar type gigs. I used to laugh at fools busting out a half stack and 100w head for a crowd of 10 fucking people, lol.

Hard to get tone when a tube amp is on volume level 1, lol. Naw baby you want it cranked.

I sold the ac15 and I think next amp will be 5-10w tube amp. The amer standard strat is less powerful acoustic style, lol.

You can find everything from "vinyl crackle" to Vocoder.

I really need to learn how to play, I've had multiple guitars over the years and barely get into it before I take a break again.

This is my current axe, Epi Les Paul Custom Pro

Freaking love this thing black and gold is my jam - just need to get off my ass n work for it.
I have Rocksmith on steam to help learn but it's often easier just to look up a tab for something and try to do what little bits I can.
Problem is what I want to play is usually too complex to even begin with (Dethklok for example hahah)

Excuse the maiden strap x'D I want to play some badass old style chicago blues with this.
The Kinsey Report - Full Moon on Main Street <------ Love that song, wana make her cry like they do.

Interesting you brought that up, My current interface is the original M-Audio from 2005. Does not work with current Mac systems anymore, no drivers, but I never liked it anyway. I had been looking at that PreSonus too but tentatively decided on the Focusrite Scarlett because of the 192 khz. It's a hard call, I hope I am making the right choice, I hate making poor purchases.

OTOH I would have a lot more use for a video clip than an audio only clip as we head more & more towards phone videos. Not the best but in the end YouTube may be the common listening/viewing target.

Sweetening & editing the audio on a video track has my interest at the moment. We’ll see how long that lasts.

Actually the Focusrite Scarlet line looks pretty sweet.

Presonus & Focusrite Scarlett both have advantages, wish the Scartett was USB3 but otherwise 192 khz vs 96 khz theoretically should make difference. I plan to order a 2i2 I think.
I don’t really see a benefit in 192khz sampling rate. I came up in the days of 44.1 vs 48k, and in those days the primary benefit of increasing sampling rate was increased frequency bandwidth from 22khz to 24khz we can’t hear above 22k to start with.
