I don’t really see a benefit in 192khz sampling rate. I came up in the days of 44.1 vs 48k, and in those days the primary benefit of increasing sampling rate was increased frequency bandwidth from 22khz to 24khz we can’t hear above 22k to start with.

Interesting point.

192 khz vs 96 khz, generates a lot of controversy. I worded it “theoretically” since I do not have a confirmed opinion yet. There is no doubt that 192 captures more info with considerably larger files; but how much of that can we actually hear….

Heck if I know, I haven’t recorded enough to know but I remember bit rates & early mp3s…

You are right, for home use it is probably negligible but I will still choose higher bit rates. Course I tend to overthink things. :p

13 inch k hats (most folks play 14-16 inch)
18 inch k crash/ride (in a bigger space id be using a 22-24 inch K light ride)
15 inch A avendis thin crash. (An homage to the 50’s cymbals)
Rom dude I aint never heard no-one get that technical on their cymbals, fkn badass mang. I would love to hear the "difference" in what you're talkin bout. Like a mini clip of -ding ding.- -ding DING.- -DING DING.- I'm CERTAINLY not a pro of any sort. I think you know what I mean :) ?

Keep in mind that MP3 is a compressed format and the bit rates were related to data rate mbps (megabauds per second). AIFF or WAV files are uncompressed and the sampling rate is the number of samples per second (think pictures per second). 44.1k is 44,100 samples per second and the same sampling rate as a CD. Blu-ray audio can be encoded at either 96k or 192k. I am pretty certain that nobody can tell the difference. It seems likely that a dog or cat would hear it differently, but my dog has refused to comment.
Anyhow, sorry to nerd out about audio stuff. Years back I was an audio engineer and I don’t get a chance to put my audio nerd hat on much these days.

That’s with the phone literally hanging off my 10 inch side snare. Not very loud at all. ?
I’ll be setting up the bigger drums in my buddy’s basement studio soon enough. 20 inch Yamaha birch kick drum, double pedal, 21 inch flat ride, 17 inch Sabian crash, 14 inch zildjian rock hats etc. Everything a bit bigger and louder and open for that room

Audio engineer? Cool, we were short on them. (y)

Your audio write up was informative. Thanks for that.

We’re coming at it from such different angles, My career & training was all computer, multimedia mainly, often streaming. I know compressions. If you want to compress a speaking voice as hard as we can & still be understandable, I am your guy….

I ordered my interface, after talking with friends on a music forum I tally changed tactics & ordered the MOTU M4. I did not know that MOTU had a brand new interface. 96khz, thanks for the explanation.

To me, LAME Encoded MP3, anything less than 192kbps, and the cymbals sound "scrambled" with "air wooshes." Variable bit rate 224kbps-320kbps fixed bit rate sound better than 192kbps. Could all be placebo.

I tried taking guitar lessons in my 30's and had no shot. After a few attempts I realized my fingers just don't work like that. Maybe from breaking most of my knuckles too many times. More likely thats an excuse albeit true. Always been jealous of musical people. Bet I could throw down on a triangle and used to play a mean kazoo around the campfire so theres that.

I grew up in the bush. No pavement. I was always jealous of the kids that skateboarded. “I wish I was good at skating”
Then at 20 years old I was living in the city and decided that I’d learn.
Know what the most beautiful thing in skating is? It’s not Tony doing a 900 or Rodney all autistically dreaming up his lengendary tricks. It’s that dude landing his first pop shove-it after failing approximately 500 times.
I never did get that good at skating. Had the funnest couple of years of my life learning tho.
You are allowed to be as good as you’d like at music provided you enjoy the incremental process of improving slowly. I’ve gotten rank at drumming lately. Thing is I just woke up and realized that. Being “good” has not been where my mind at. I’ve just been enjoying the stress relief/release and trying to improve just a little bit every day. Important thing is I’ve been playing. Can’t be all that bad after hours and hours and hours of “practice”. Like how you only notice how much your plants are growing when you return after being gone a few days.
The process is the fun. If you were Hendrix right from day 1 you’d lose interest like entering all the cheats on a video game the day you buy it. What makes games fun is that they are hard.

I’ve always played guitar but I’m not a guitar player. It’s interesting tho. I occasionally write guitar parts for an actual guitar player. (He then takes what i write and makes it actually sound good and adds to it lol)
Basically he’s so good that he appreciates my childlike innocence on that instrument because at times he is too jaded by theory and experience. I’ve always found new players to write the most original, earnest music for that reason. Experienced players often don’t have the billiards to just let an E cord hang for an entire measure.. that’s why John Frusciante from the red hot chilli s is so revered. He s a rank guitar player but unafraid to keep it simple as f@ck if that sounds best. Like one note on one string just passionately played. Even you could play half of his parts if you put like 2 days of internet learning in

I totally agree with all you say here. Alot of times the journey can the reward. My example is golf. My childhood didn't include country clubs or golf courses but the guys I hang out with for 30 years now are all country club brats. From scratch golfers to like 8 handicaps. I started playing in my late teens early 20's and didnt break 100 for 3 or 4 years. Once I broke 90 consistently I was satisfied and quit playing because it was never fun for me. So I get putting in work to get better but....

We have all had the one kid on the team or in class who no matter how hard he/she tried, just clearly didnt have the ability suited to the pursuit. I'm telling you thats me with a guitar. Its laughable. A dude who I was willingly paying cash to even finally gave in and begrudgingly admitted I was hopeless. Its bizarre. And Im like most everyone else here I assume. Say I cant do something and its on, just not in this case. Truly hopeless and have come to terms with it. Its definitely a talent I dont have. That and math.

I spent a fair bit of time playing around on a guitar a couple decades ago but never got past being a noodler. Some CCR, some Ventures, stuff like that was as far as I got.
Most of my friends(metalheads all, it was the 80's ya know ;)) played something , and I ended up running a little Alternative music club in the mid-nineties and being around music and musicians all the time, but it wasn't until the early 2000s I started picking up a bit. It can be a bit intimidating for a newb when the guy showing you stuff has been nominated for a Juno, but I tried, and my various friend/teachers were patient.

I still have an acoustic and a half-size classical but they mostly just get dusted rather than played.

Haha I hear ya. I guess for you it’s guitar and for me it is golf ?. Always send er into the bushes

Drums is a very challenging yet rewarding pursuit I would recommend. Plus you get to piss everyone off and collect something that takes up a hearty amount of space. Wives love that ? also it’s very expensive ?
It was like 7 years ago I told my wife I'm going to buy a guitar and amp with some of tax check...then I came home with a drum set lol. Had a good deal on a pearl forum set. Cymbals was shit but easy fix lol. When i was a kid my parents bought me a drum set. I appreciate that much more now having kids and realizing what they put up with for me. But anyway I had this one neighbour that was always really cool and praised it, the others not so much lol. Another great aspect of the drums is if your good or bad they are still fun to play lol

I once owned a early 90 s green pearl forum kit.. wait it’s still in the shed ? I still own it haha. Classic!
I low key hate it but it taught me what kind of drums I do want. Also got an old fiberglass Rogers kit in storage. I should dig that shit out at some point and give em to someone starting out.

I wish I still had mine, like you said space reasons something about a kid needing a bed...I argued we had a perfectly good couch...I had it more for people to play when they came over. I had everything but a bass amp, then it thinned out.

You reminded me of another fella that pisses people off and takes up too much space: the guy that plays the Big Butch Bass Bull Fiddle

I gotta buy an extra seat when I ride the airplane
Or the womens and the childrens and the pilot complain
Cuz it sure don't fit in the overhead bin
And leavin' her behind is basically a sin
