CityNews Edmonton: Two dozen temperature records broken across Alberta on Monday.

Article mentions Milk River, and Grassy Lake - two of my favourite swimming holes.

Never, have I seen these temps recommended for germination.
Still, cant argue will success.

Spindly sprouts. These would have fallen over, indoors. Must be the wind fortifying them.
No crutches here, told them to "get tough - or die"

Always glad to have you @Gentlemancorpse.
The jellybean lives on. I ended up cutting half a dozen of the greenhouse, spent, coco bricks into the finished pile. I like fluffy soil.
The mix itself must be getting dilute, weaksauce, inert. Things yellowed up pretty quickly, even under lowlights.

Never done a micro grow before ,,,although this doesn't exactly fit the definition considering the expectations.
Just want to get something for nothing. Zero investment grow.
If I get real seed lucky, I wanna do a whole 3x5 table. Stuff 'er right to the gills. Like maybe start 60-70 and run 30. I think an auto SOG would be a fun way to light the garden back up, come cooler weather.
I am counting chickens, of course. More likely to end up with zero seeds, than 70.
I dream. I aspire.

I got a new job.
Not even 2 hours in, boss says, "you ever been up in a basket ? "

Congratulations on the new job!
As someone with thousands of hours in the air, manbaskets are so much better than JLGs. I'd much rather be hanging from a crane with a huge capacity than a manlift that is always looking for an excuse to topple.

Is your crane an old conventional or is it a hydraulic? If it is a conventional, has your operator given you the heart-attack fun of a free-fall yet? o_O

Damn, sorry. As an old rigger/signal man, this stuff can get me babbling like a ninny. :)

Years ago, I spent a lot of time hanging off the side of this thing.
Capture+_2021-08-01-11-07-41_(1).png
That was more like a window washers basket. Dual cable, dual operator controls. Also, a dedicated line on my harness.
I found it comforting to have my own string to swing on, if the basket were to leave unexpectedly.

Yesterday, my harness was attached to the basket only,,, I took comfort in the knowledge that any incident at that height would not result in injury.
At 9.8 metre per second- per second it would certainly be an intense couple seconds followed only by death, not pain.

Mostly I will be working indoors, manufacturing roofing and siding components.
Drip edge, flashing, valleys, continuous eaves,,,
bunch of other stuff that I know nothing about ?

My son has been with this outfit for three years or so. I have been reading between the lines from a distance for a while now, and only seen good things.
The boss is meticulous and uncompromising in the pursuit of excellence.
The most interesting, and confidence inspiring quote my boss uttered yesterday was "Show me your feet"

We were at a new jobsite to shingle a roof.
He shows up before the crew. He walks the perimeter of the house.
He sets and secures the ladders.
He walks the entire roof and puts his head right down on the deck to observe the lie.

His quote and actions all spoke of a pro who was absolutely unwilling to accept anything at face value,,, just because the builder said "good to go" doesn't mean he will blindly send a crew up there.
I see him taking responsibility for every single facet of his crews safety.

Here is why his quote carried so much weight with me:

%50 of employers would not have asked about my footwear

The other half would have simply said "are your shoes okay to go on this roof?" , and accepted my answer if I said 'Yes'

I will put this guy in the top %1
He didnt even give me the opportunity to lie,,,
The long version of what happened there would have more accurately sounded like "show me the soles of your shoes: because I am not going to take you up there, if I do not approve of what I see. "

I like working for this kind of character. He will never snow me. He understands that looking out for my best interest,,, is in his best interest.

Now I am babbling on. Mostly excited to share news with yous guys, my frens.
This will be a nice skillset to have on my resume. A good trade that is not just for young men.
Houses will always have eaves and siding , and it will always be overpriced ?

It boggles my mind the risks some employers will allow their employees to take simply in ignorance. And they're banking on that lack of knowledge, not only about things like proper footwear, but that the workers don't know they have protections if anything does happen.

I'm always on my crew about wearing real boots. If they show up in sneakers they're going home.

I'll never forget I was running this big commercial job and the weather forecast was abysmal. I made sure all my crew had good boots that were waxed or waterproof, extra socks and I bought them all rain suits.

The other crew that was out there was mostly day workers that were hired for a "landscaping" gig when in fact they were pouring these massive concrete ballasts to support solar arrays. These kids were getting bused in wearing sneakers and tennis shoes, wearing sweatpants and shit. It was 38°F (3.3°C by my calculations) and simultaneously raining and snowing. Not only was their crew miserable, some of them looked on the verge of hypothermia. One of them walked over to one of my laborers and asked where he got the rain suit... my guy said the company provided it. The other dudes jaw dropped... like it had never occurred to him the company was responsible for protecting their workers.

Next day their entire crew refused to start work until the company provided rain suits and their foreman had to run to a bunch of stores to buy everyone rain gear.

One of my proudest moments as an employer to be honest.

Sorry for the tangent... I'm smoking on some Black Triangle Kashmir Azad, your comment took me down memory lane for a moment there...

I'm even happier for you after this post. In my experience finding a job is easy, finding a person worth working for is much more difficult.

That sounds similar to the swing stages I've worked with. I have a few stories about those things. I don't mind working from them if I hung them and am on the inspection crew that maintains them, but otherwise they make me nervous.

Anyway, congrats again and may your air conditioner ever blow cold. ;)

wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sail the darkened seas,
On a great big clipper ship,
Going from this land here to that,
In a sailor's suit and cap,
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town,
And of himself, and those around.
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know.
20210806_120628_HDR.jpg

Because when the chuck begins to flow,
I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jim's in this town,
And all the politicians makin' busy sounds,
And everybody puttin' everybody else down,
And all the dead pistils pile up in mounds,
'Cause when the chuck begins to flow,
Then I really don't care anymore.
