K5, the dude that was definitely a chick and not a dude or a dude-chick... just a chick...

Actually pretty excited I was wrong on this one. She's unique amongst all the Kokusho plants... the dark purple stems, with a strong stem rub and great structure really stand out

K7 got culled for throwing full on sacs, which is disappointing. It's the first of the 12 I've flowered to do so it's not a deathknell for the project at this point, but I'll be watching them all like a hawk now. Hopefully it was isolated to that particular plant or pheno.

K5 is still the standout pheno. Best structure by far and still the most interesting stem rub. She's the last shot.

Also, sorry the pics suck. Didn't have the motivation to pull them all out for better pictures and it's a little tight in there lol.

The smells coming from the Kokusho now really run the entire gambit of weed smells... the range is really incredible. #9 and #10 are sweet, with #10 being the fruitier of the two. #8 is RANK. Skunky with a hint of fresh asphalt. #12 is fresh pine and lemon rind. And #5 is a little further behind obviously but seems to be the closest to the raspberry and coffee nose from my last favorite.

Top colas from #9 and #10. These two are starting to resemble the phenos from the first grow and have a similar nose. Still slight sweet but with that coffee berry nose.

#8 is still randomly super skunky but otherwise looks just like these two.

#7 had a single sac pulled off her lowers today. Im gonna keep her going but she's definitely out of the running for any breeding. She probably wasn't gonna make the cut anyways, she's definitely the heaviest sativa leaner and that's not what I want from this project.

#5 is obviously still behind all these others so not much to update there yet.

Just realized I can label pictures... so helpful! So this gal hasn't shown any more sacs since I flipped her fortunately so it looks like I'll get to finish her. But as I mentioned, she won't be used for anything going forward. 20210620_212952.jpg

These three are really what I'm starting to think of as the predominant form for this cross. Short, squat and finish quickly. 8 and 9 are looking close already. 10 is a little behind and seems to be the best yielder of the three. They all have that funky raspberry note underneath but each builds off that nose in a different way. I'm leaning towards trying to reveg 10 at the moment.

Well, despite all her promise, number 5 isn't gonna make the cut. Her lowers threw sacs as well. Interesting that the two tall phenos are the ones showing intersex traits. There's definitely some instability in this line. I love the smoke but if I keep moving forward with this project I'm going to have to be really careful making F2s

So 8 and 9 will be ready to chop when I get back on Sunday. 10 slowed down a bit and looks like she has a few weeks left. The other two are a ways out still. No further signs of sacs on anyone so far.

I'm leaning towards trying to reveg both 8 and 10. 8 has that rankness that I like while still carrying through the raspberry and coffee notes that drew me to this cross originally and also has the reliably fast finishing time I like. 10 has similar notes in the nose but isn't quite as skunky, but is a far superior yielder. Obviously need a smoke test to really decide but there's a decent chance I'll F2 both (assuming I can reveg then, which you know what they say about assumptions...) . Once the pest issue is under control better I'll be dropping some more of these and looking for a nice male. Now that I've seen a good array of phenos I've got a better idea of what I'm looking for.

Kokusho #8 and #9 came down today. Going to try and reveg #8. They both smelled great but 8 was more complex. I feel like every time I smell her I get something a little different ranging from skunky too sweet berries too sour and acrid. She's all over the place. Not a great yielder but better than 9 and I feel like with some training she could still put out a bit better. Here she is... 20210628_205031.jpg 20210628_205007.jpg 20210628_204932.jpg 20210628_205001.jpg

On the non Kokusho chucking related front... two males and two females from the FVK (Hippy Slayer 33 x GMO BX1)! 20210628_221123.jpg Perfect. Open pollination commencing! The front left and back right are the boys. Funny we got two extremes... front is the tallest plant and the fastest developing with a nice garlicky stem rub... Rear is the shortest, and showed sacks much later and doesn't have much of a nose yet. I think under different circumstances I'd pull the short one but I'm trying to maximize the genetic diversity here since these were the only 4 viable seeds from that first chuck

K10 came down last night. Similar terp profile to 9 but a better yielder. Unfortunately in harvesting her I found a handful of nanners in her lower buds. 20210707_205037.jpg

The frequency of intersex traits in this cross is starting to concern me. I've grown 15 total plants, with 8 females and 5 have had sacs or nanners. I love the smoke, but that's over 60% of females even if it's an admittedly small sample size. The instability combined with the low yield means it will be a lot of effort to get it to where I want, and I'm not sure I'm at that point in my chucking career lol. This project may go on hiatus for a little bit unfortunately
