Lectures/webinars for a deeper understanding

As I have began to grasp a basic understanding of the general growing process, I have began to try and get a deeper understanding of everything to be more effective at providing what the plants really need. Instead of just knowing that things work, I think its better to know how and why they work.

I believe that trying to learn at least one thing a day is the best way to stay sharp, and non-complacent in our quest to grow the best cannabis that we possibly can given our individual circumstances.

There is a lot of great videos on YouTube that break things down in an easily digestible form as long as you already have the basics down. I'll be posting some that I find helpful here, and I encourage anyone else that finds anything worthwhile to post as well.

I have owned an apogee Quantum sensor for about 10 years. I didn't realize this guy was the president of the company, until after the video.

If I could make one generalization,,, having used this thing so many times,,,
(Almost) NO-ONE, is using that much light.

I am not picking on any brand ,,,this was the first chart that came up. Are you reading it the same as I am?

Optimal distance to achieve 1500 ppfd would lie somewhere around 8 or 9 inches from the canopy.- and they would struggle to span 12 inches.

Hard to get on the LED bandwagon,,,when the fare is sooooo high.

I'm getting close to that. HLG 600. About the only thing I would change is the light spread but for a 4x4 flower footprint maybe even 5x5 its up there I would say

You are correct that almost no one uses that much light in a typical situation, but it is used in a high performance grow with a perfected environment with optimal nutrient inputs and co2 supplementation, as you would have in a lab environment, or super dialed in room.

Also, you can't really base led performance on a single par map from an unknown light, and that one looks pretty bad lol. The investment isn't really that high now as long as you are not buying prebuilt fixtures, or have a really big operation.

For example, I have about $450 into my flower lights, with about a 8hr time investment into building(I work slow lol), they run at about 480-500w, I can run everything I need of a single 15a breaker, and I don't need buy bulbs every 6 months. A brand new single ended hps still runs $250-$350 to get a good hood and ballast, and it's going to use twice the power, need its own breaker, and weigh 5x as much.

With boards or strips (properly spaced out), the par map is always going to be more even and extend further to the edges than a single bulb fixture. As well as the obvious spectral tuning advantage of being able to use all kinds of different wide spectrum whites of various Kelvin as well as specific nanometer mono diodes vs fewer options in spectral differences between bulb manufacturers.

That's not to say led is king, and hps sucks or anything, tbh Im thinking about picking one up to use in the winter. Hps is still a great lighting system, but leds have rapidly become both better and cheaper in the last few years, and I imagine will only get better and cheaper as time progresses.

I like my (first) LED's a lot but I'm just growin in a tent. I can't even imagine trying to use them for commercial production. There's no way they could beat a room full of bare bulbed hps lamps all triangulated out and hanging vertical. The OVERLAP in light in that particular situation is a serious benefit that LED's can never offer in their current capacity/configurations....as they are all mounted on flat panels.

Thanks for digging up/sharing the vids.....

Hmm I beg to differ the gavita strip lights do exactly that.

Not if they shoot straight down they don't. (show me LED's that do otherwise...I'm willing to learn)

Vert lamps (HID) offer side lighting LED's just don't/can't offer. Have you ran a room full of 10- 1000 watt hps bare bulb lamps hung vedrtically to make a comparison? It's a crazy sight. Side buds the size of top colas in an LED tent grow...LOL. >>Weight<<

So I beg to differ as well.

I just plucked this because I'm not going to post non public grows of others. Seems like good light spread to me. I have a buddy using these on a much much larger scale

Yup, cant just take a huge room optimized for hps growing and hang leds and expect the same results. On a large scale both can be very effective, you just have to optimize the growing style for the lights that you are using. Hps benefits more from large rooms with the lights up high for lots of overlap, where I would say led is more optimized for multiple smaller rooms or vertical rack style.

Imo the best way to retrofit a big hps room would be using leds over the top, with bare bulb cmh hanging between rows.

I would like to see the led company's focused on commercial settings (gavita, fluence ECT) make a light with bars that put the LEDs on an alternating pitch, or have bars that are able to be rotated slightly for more throw at the edges allowing for fixtures to have an effective overlap instead of just straight down. Straight down works great in a tent or small room, but in a hps retrofit setting I think being able to throw light at a slight angle, as well as straight down would offer more penetration and overlap potential.

I've been working with a similar setup. Ever since I saw @Capt. C 515 Sport and the results, both in flower pics and actual buds I held in my hand, I've been finding a way to put barebulb CMH in the mix. There is a noticeable difference in CMH exposed buds. Makes me very curious to try the 10K CMH finishing bulb.

It works. Not a game changer.
Is that MH or CMH? If MH, wondering if CMH 10K will be any better. I have several different "intentionally targeted" (vs. just a mishmash of whatever lights I could find) spectrums with strips, pucks, and CMH this round so I may already be covered so to speak? Might be worth a shot.

The relative spectral radiances may differ between the halide and the CMH . The difference is small, I imagine- even on paper. Most likely undetectable differences in a finished crop by a Joe like me.

The above videos keeps mentioning quantity over exclusivity,,,
I say,
blast them with everything you got !

Seriously though, it is really hard to hit those high numbers on a meter. Look at that first photo I posted. On the far left side, those crowns are swarming the hood. That is 400W hps. So how much damage (yield) can one fixture really do in the garden ?
My 8 foot garden is three fixtures wide. She is pushing 5 feet from the back wall. My meter tells me the foreground is barely past compensation.
I added an additional bulb tonight, and if M'Gyver ever get a moment alone, I should have the fifth fixture up soon.
