Magic: The Gathering

So recently I realized that I'm not the only nerd around here and thought maybe we can use this thread to talk about the game.

I have not personally played in a few years, and a lot of my cards are gone due to poor life choices LOL, but I do still have a decent amount left. I started playing when Revised / 3rd Edition first came out. The good ol' Days when you weren't worried about how many of a specific card was in your deck because there was no DCI running around saying some cards are restricted or banned, and the deck only had to be 40 cards (40 Black Lotus and 40 Lightning Bolt anyone?) and of course, I remember thinking "Wow an Alpha Black Lotus is worth $50.00 !"..... LOL of course you could trade one of those for a Mansion now....

I had a decent sized collection back in the day, which included a pretty good chunk of the Unlimited Set (They were easy to get at the time...)

I also managed to open TWO Booster Packs of Arabian Nights back in the day for 60 dollars. An unopened box of Arabian Nights Booster Packs now is like a quarter Million dollars though....Pretty sure I won't be opening another one LOL.

Here's a pack of Arabian Nights if you're....Nuts and have 10 grand to spend.... :

So I've been kind of watching these videos on YouTube lately where a dude opens Alpha Starter Decks, or a whole box of Boosters (Imagine that huh? LOL!) and I have to say, this is one of the videos where he's opening an Alpha Starter Deck:

Now this one is really special:

Dude is opening a Beta Starter Deck, and I won't ruin the ending but the rare he pulls.....

Anyway, feel free to add to this thread, as I was kind of surprised how many people here actually heard of this game.

Clearly I was gonna post this one.... LOL.

Legit one of my ALL time favorite cards in the game.... I LOVE Vercursion (The name given to a deck that used this card to gain more cards and create infinite loops in the game so you could win however you like and no matter how many opponents even!).

I actually still have some of these Enchantress decks built, and it was brutal for any opponent who didn't kill me before it went off.

Crucible of Worlds, which allows you to play land cards from the graveyard as though they were in your hand, Zuran Orb which lets you sacrifice land for 2 life, and Fastbond which allows you to play ANY number of lands every turn, but you take a point of damage for each land beyind the first....

So you play a single Island, tap for a Blue Mana, sac it for 2 life, and use Crucible and Fastbond to repeat and you now have infinite mana and life. I then Braingeyser myself for every card in my deck, lay out more land, find a Fireball, and kill any number of opponents. Then if you have Timetwister you can continue this on.... And on.... LOL.

By the way, I don't have any of the "Power 9" but I can pull that little infinite mana infinite life combo off, on my first turn, with a Sol Ring. Zuran Orb costs 0, Crucible costs 3, Fastbond is one Green, so 3 colorless and one green, and I become hard to kill with that. You can also just Braingeyser your opponent to death.

Sometimes I'd be a jerk and use Platinum Angel (You can't die even if your life total goes below 0) and then I had Mirror Universe to switch life totals after I commit suicide using City of Brass (Deal a damage whenever you tap it). Good times!

Here's how I used to make people throw their cards at me and concede :

ice-350-zuran-orb.jpg
Play a Forest Card so you can cast Fastbond:

eyJrZXkiOiI3MkNERTNDNC0wNURCLTQ2Q0EtOEQ2Ri1CQjEzNzcxN0U4QjcuanBnIiwiZWRpdHMiOnsicmVzaXplIjp7Im...jpg

Now you can play an Island, and another Forest:

Play Sol Ring so you can play that Crucible :

Now sacrifice the tapped lands for 2 life each.... Play them from the graveyard, tap for mana, sac for life again... repeat.

Cast that for literally whatever number of cards they have in their library +1 card, and the game is over.

And if you ave Platinum Angel in play, you can kill yourself and switch life totals. Or with the infinite mana and Life, Fireball everyone else. :)

Posted one of these in the other thread, but it's a sweet card:

Alpha, Beta, Unlimited Spellblast lol.... and a Revised Tutor. Kind of crazy that a common that was worth 10 cents is now 50 bucks lol.

All those old staples have gone nuts in recent years. Old foils are ridiculous. I just sold a foil Barbarian Ring for $40. The regular version is 40 cents lol.

I still play a lot of Magic but we mostly just do limited stuff like drafts and sealed. Levels the playing field. I know people with absurd collections, if we play constructed they'll just always win. One of my biggest complaints about Magic these days is its kind of just pay to win with most formats now. We were playing the other day and this guy cast a Gaea's Cradle Foil Judge Promo and I was like dudes playing with $3k cards, what chance do I have here lol? Worth more than my whole collection...

I do play some Commander/EDH still and funny enough my main deck Is a Uril, The Mistalker deck that's kind of based off those old Enchantress deck builds you were just talking about.

He's mean one on one but he draws so much hate I usually get ganged up on in multi-player lol.

I have a few EDH decks my self. The first commander I built around:

Similar play style to Uril but the blue gives me access to unblockable and can just dump that commander damage. I don't play the deck much anymore but it's around somewhere.
I had a buddy who ran a Rafiq EDH deck but as an exalted tribal build. It was pretty fun!

Bro that would be murder in one version I built

Auratog (Atog you sac Enchantments to to pump up)

Enchanted Evening (all permanents are now Enchantments)

Rancor (enchant creature, gives it trample and pumps it up, if it fits to the graveyard it goes back in your hand so Tha Auratog has trample.....) :) also you can disenchant any permanent from Enchanted Evening.... lol.

But bro those cards I posted, you can beat him and I don't have any Power 9 either. Few people have enough counter magic to control that. Besides its hilarious when Mr. My deck cost a million can't kill you anymore because you have unlimited life with 50 dollars worth of cards.

I used to have dual lands and a bunch of Legends and Antiquities but those are gone now. You see that video? Dude pulled Ancestral Recall.... lol worth like a good new car by itself haha.

Yeah, in EDH you can only have one of each card so a lot of those tricks become too inconsistent (unless you run all the tutors). Uril works well because the deck is just stacked with cheap Enchantments like the aforementioned rancor. Basically anything that gives protection or evasion. Also you can also only use colors from your commander, who has to be a legendary creature so your card base gets trimmed a bit. There's a bunch more rules but you know how Google works haha

Yeah, I had alot of cards worth a lot of money over the years, but I always periodically sols stuff so it never hung around long enough to really gain any value... oh well

I haven't really played that type before but I can see the appeal. My usual Enchantress is Blue/White/Green, but back when I had Underworld Dreams, I added black and used Forced Fruition, and Wheel of Fortune to kill everyone. Counterspell played heavy too to make sure, and since I didn't have any Power 9 I did use tutors to pull Fastbond for quicker take offs lol.

I honestly really miss the way we played in the mid 90s; I hated 4th Edition lol. But Sylvan Library and the other "stack the top 3 cards" helped a lot so it was cool.

If you ever drag your ass up here hit a bro up!

Me and my daughter play quite a bit as well. She really gets a kick out of destroying me when she's winning. Lol

Gentlemen Corpse does too :) the oldest here is interested, but hasn't played yet. My mom and a bunch of my friends in Jr High all played. It's good to know if we do that BBQ a few of us could bs about it lol.
