My thoughts on this.
I grew up in British Columbia in Canada. The California of Canada. Back in the early 80'd we had skunk weed that smelt exactly like skunk spray. There is also a plant out here called western skunk cabbage and it smells the exact same.

Now the term Road Kill is something different from Skunk weed. Skunk weed smelt like skunks and roadkill smelt like rotting animal flesh. The Heimi Cheeba RKS was originally just called road kill. Skunk was not part of the name. That got added later. If you listen to this podcast with Heimi himself you'll see or hear.
So I feel the two are different. There's Skunk and there's Roadkill.
Now Skunks only exist in North America so when the skunk weed hit the UK they called it Cheese because they don't know what a skunk smell like. They don't have any. Same with any where else in the world... No Skunks. (the animal not the weed)
I have read articles that stated the skunk smell came from volatile compounds within the plant not the terpenes.
I have tried every so called skunk rks type strain and not found what I smoked in High School. I feel that specific cultivar has died and gone the way of the vikings.
There are land race sativas with skunky smells and landrace indicas. I think the final secret is they are hidden in the old land races. Our weed today is too many hybrid crosses with muttered terpene values. To find wha you're looking for go to the old schol landraces and not the ones sold in seed banks.
