In your photo, the first pic with the cottony growth inside, is typical of the false morel (gyromita). Forgot to add that as a main identifier.
Nice cutaway shot of differing types.

Today's Harvest. I normally don't pick the smaller ones if I know I can relocate them after they mature some. Many of these were initially grays and were photographed when I located them.

The larger, fresher specimens with soil attached were found by my wife and myself. We had crossed the road and went into an overgrown area that was once the original homestead in my neighborhood. The place burnt over 60 yrs ago but the soil there is sooo black. We were looking at some of the old stuff still lying around and on the way out my wife exclaims.. Look! She had found the double cluster.

I plan on making several attempts at cultivation using a Spore slurry, Tissue Culture slurry, and possibly from sclerotia, if there are any found in the soil lumps.
I know these aren't "active" but I might do a thread anyway to document the attempts.

Man that's so awesome @jpcyan2. We had planned to slurry an area on my friends parents property. Like clockwork every year we'd hit em. We thought about spreading a slurry in areas where patches were common...hopefully that area had the necessary conditions for the mycelium

Found these early greys along my driveway. I hope to see more in the next week or so. The leaf debris is pretty heavy, so I'm sure some are hiding.
I walked right by the largest one 3 times while searching the area. Just happened to notice it when I walked down to check the mail. Its crazy the way they seem to just pop out at you when you least expect it :D
These get full southern exposure and are a good indicator for me to start checking in the woods soon. I watered them with captured rain water and will continue to document the growth until they are harvested.
