I picked up a pack of these from Todd from AG seed co.
This is his description;

I received Northern Lights #5 directly from Seattle Greg, who is the gentleman who sent Northern Lights to Nevil in 1984.

These seeds are a F2 reproduction of the Northern Lights #5 seeds that I received.

The plants were all amazing, any of them could have been considered "keepers". Resin production is high, the scent is absolutely old-school and brings me back to the 80's when I first started growing.

I've had some great examples of this strain over the years so am excited to preserve these for the cause!
In que for preservation.

So what are some famous crosses of NL#5?
I hear gears stripping in my head lol.
I'd put Haze at the top of that list. NL5/Haze was the precursor to many strains that came out of the Netherlands.

NL is a great plant to cross with if you're looking to shorten flower time and/or reduce lanky sativa traits.

FWIW, I recently grew Strayfox's Sensi Star x NL and it was phenomenal. At a gathering recently with probably over 20 different strains being sampled, that Sensi Star x NL was everyone's hands down favorite.

So how would ya put that cross together?
Would ya open pollinate the Haze with the NL?
I've got some Columbian Haze in an upcoming seed run and I'm trying to get some lines figured out.
I'm thinking these NL's may combine well with the RKS beans I've got too.

If you plan on making NL f3’s, then I think do that first before making any crosses. Keep any outstanding mom’s from the f2 generation, but as a rule of thumb the higher number the F-generation, the more stable the traits will be to pass on.

I’d try only using 1 or 2 outstanding males and females each in an open pollination, unless genetic diversity is the goal.

I'm definatley going for seed production of the NL's to f3.
The same for the CH.
But f2 cuts will be taken.
It'll be a long stretch getting getting both strains seededand on to these experiments, I'm just trying to plan this organized kaos!
Not to mention an American Big Bud, a RKS and a Deep Chunk I've still got seed runs of ahead.
These sounds like some great combinations for my future.

I have some f2s somewhere from a Bodhi strain I don't think he ever released...Triad...NL5 x Ortega x (NL5 x NL1 x NL5)...got some real dank stinking plants from them too...just never got back to them...I'll look for them and see how many there are and germ rates...no telling?

So forgive my ignorance, but I will go ahead and ask...
NL5, was that a particular NL pheno that was found to be exceptional?
If so was it cut only at one point?
And then that leads to the question how did it make it to seed form. If clones were taken and then reversed, then the seeds would be female.
So that leads me to believe that the NL5 cut was breed to a different NL to produce the seeds. Is that correct??
And again, if that is the case, then the seeds aren't really NL5. (No disrespect intended) I guess I'm just not getting it.
When I tried to google the history, all I really got was that it was introduced in 1989 and won a bunch of stuff. It also talked about it being a major player in the breeding of different strains.
Sorry if this is something that I should know. I'm new to the idea of breeding, and don't really have a grasp of the how to's.
Cheers,
WillieP

NL5 is a cut. I believe there were 10 or so NL cuts and were numbered according to their indica/sativa traits?

If you dig hard enough you can read neville’s account of all this. it is a bit of a rabbit hole though, like many strains.

So you’re right, there is no pure NL5 in seed form.

Thank you for taking the time to square me away on this.
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't having some sort of dumb ass brain fart.

So in general, all the really killer cut only stuff you hear people talking about is just a killer pheno that they were fortunate to of found. And then that cut has had the shit cloned out of it, and so on, and so on...
Again I really am not up on these things...
So if you were to take clones of one of these killer cuts and then reverse one of them to force it to produce pollen, then breed those two, that would create female seeds, correct? But those seeds would still not produce the same result as the original because the new seeds would have the ability to produce different phenos of their own from the recessive genes they would have.
The moral is, a cut is a cut. is a cut, and there is no way to reproduce it other than cloning. True??
Thanks again,
WillieP

Sorry @Skunky Dunk Farms, I didn't mean to highjack your thread.
