Very cool! I noticed some of your vials are 8 years old. How long would you say properly stored pollen will be viable? I believe pollen collection will part of my future as well.

G'day @jaws how does it go with light degradation? Does it shorten the vitality of it.
We know sunlight and moisture makes it useless, I'm interested to see if there is a correlation between freshly pollinated and long term pollination without it being covered in darkness. That is quite the impressive collection there. Your tag shouldn't read Jaws it should be hay fever haha. Seriously killer collection

i do not use any flour or beads or rice none of that is needed, properly cleaning and drying will take you a long way in long term viable pollen. i should do a write up on my tech save it and drop in post in times like these, i have laid out my process so many times over the years.
sure light will degrade it as well as water/moisture main reason ppl open there containers up a month after collecting there pollen and it's lumpy or has already begun to show mold growth, that's because ppl do not take the time to dry there pollens correctly. i see it all the time ppl scrapping there fresh pollen into a pile then into a container with some rice or beads then later you see them bitching because there pollen went to shit. well that's your fault not the pollen. i have ran 6-7-8 year pollen and it still be viable, as viable as it once was ahh no but still viable. two pollen taken at the same time different strain 18 months later one pollen highly viable the other could not produce a seed at all, if all things were the same then the one that was shit was just a weaker source of pollen simple as that.
i do not collect pollen for long term storage never have never will, do i have very old pollen indeed i do but i did not take it for that purpose i took what i thought i would need for my project and what was left i kept and over time if i wanted to use it again i would pull it out and give it a go, if it worked it worked if it did not i'd clean my container and mark it a gone in my masters list.
fpog and alien cookies i have many different containers for both of those pollens, different harvest dates different phenol's different f-gen and or ic/bc why because i use those two pollens more then any other pollens i have. by dropping those pics in today just reminded me that i still have some VBS so i will be getting that out in the morning pulling it to the side for use in my next grow, that pollen is where my new blackberry work start from so ya want to get that used and i hope it is still viable.
as far as do i think covered pollen will have a longer life span then non covered pollen YES indeed i do, i have never done a test like that but common sense gives the answer in my mind. fresh pollen is always the best pollen but next day pollen is just as good as same day pollen if that makes any sense, meaning i chose to use my pollen as soon as possible but have great faith that next day week later month later year later it will still be viable because i did the proper work out the gate. proper drying and cleaning.
