Pungent Terpene Profiles of plants

OK so, I know I'm a bit obsessed with the scents of Cannabis, and some other plants as well, and having started down this journey of learning about plants more so than I ever have before, I keep on having thoughts that I ponder, such as the Terpene Profile, of a given strain, or plant species in general, and so I'm kind of curious; I'm easily drawn by Pungent aromas in my favorite strains, and there's other plants that have this too (Titan Arum, Durian Fruit, none of which I've had a chance to sniff) however I'm wondering if Terpene Profiles change much throughout a strain or plant in a way that's measurable.

When I first started learning about Terpenes and how they're what gives a strain it's smell, I was reading on Leafly, which had a lot of stuff about them that I read through, and they also have that graph showing what the top 3 Terpenes in a strain are, and so first, I guess my question there would be how accurate these are? I've since learned that Leafly isn't always accurate.

That then begs the question about the Terpene Data they have, and what they're using to state these as fact.

Example:

The most abundant terpene in Blue Dream is myrcene, followed by pinene and caryophyllene.

DOMINANT TERPENE

Myrcene (herbal)
The most common terpene found in cannabis and has an earthy scent.
OTHER TERPENES

Pinene (pine)

Caryophyllene (pepper)

Now I don't know enough about this to really say one way or the either if they're accurate or not, and another thing would be Phenotypes adding to this and making it more convoluted because if a Phenotype smells and tastes THAT much different (Like Skunk #1 and UK Cheese) wouldn't it stand to reason the Terpene Profile is totally different from Skunk #1 even though it's the same strain ?

I've seen Terpene Data listed at a Dispensary before, and though I'm not really sure what tests they run to acquire said data (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer maybe?) I'm interested to find out more, but I'm not exactly sure "where to start digging".

So:

1. Is Leafly full of it? Does Blue Dream (Just as an example) ALWAYS have Myrcene as the dominant Terpene?
2. Does a Terpene Profile change much? And is it affected by Phenotypes ?
3. What is used to give / Get Terpene Data ?

Thanks for any help; I'd look more into this, but what are the chances I find the website NOT bullshitting me with "facts" ? I'd prefer to keep my confusion at a minimum lol.

I also know there's way more than "just a few" Terpenes.... Or at least I saw a website listing multiple new ones I'd never heard of and have to google..... I also "think I can guess" when one has a healthy dose of Caryophyllene based on a nose tingle / spicy tingle sensation when exhaled through the nose. Is that at all accurate too or am I bullshitting myself with that part too ?

It's becoming more and more common. I bet you got one close to you.
Thanks again bro, I mean there has to be one somewhere cause I've seen Terpene data at dispensaries here, but after reading about them because of my obsession with the way they all smell I was reading about them, but finding info about a Terpene Profile for a strain, there was mixed results on Google over what a given strain has, and I haven't been able to find anything on if they change batch to batch.

Part of the reason for that is that every single plant is slightly different in their terpene profile. They will have a dominant terp but the small/trace ones and their proportions are where keepers are made.

Brought it to a local lab that did it. Was 75 bucks for both or 50 for just thc . Gram sample , dropped it off and they had results in less than a week .
This is awesome! As it becomes more common the price will continue to drop. I'm daydreaming of a database of strains and they're actual tested terpenes, not just generalizations. Like @Frimpong mentioned, they change, and it would be so interesting to track that, especially through breeding to see what gets passed on.

I believe leafly is pretty accurate with the terpenes. My Santa Cruz Blue Dream Live Resin Badder top terpenes was Myrcene at 4.83%, only had it once so can’t say if always dominant. For a year or two I would write down the top 4-5 terpenes in each concentrate into a journal to see which ones I did and didn’t like and to see if there was a pattern. I have IBS and deal with nausea and pain during my cycles so I need particular terpenes. What I’ve found is I like strains high in B-Caryophyllene, Linalool, Mercyne, Terpinolene, and Limene. Ocimene and Humulene together = disaster for my stomach but if just one then not too bad.

Looking at my notes I see that with the same strain but different batch the terpenes are the same but which one was more dominant was different. For instance, picked up Garlic Cookies Sugar in Feb 2020 and top terpenes are: Limonene, Myrcene, B-Cary, and Humulene in that order. Picked it up again from same growers September 2020 and top terpenes were: Limonene, B-Cary, Myrcene, Humulene, and Linanlool. Same with Motorbreath #15 sugar; same terpenes just not same order of strongness?

Oh, forgot to ask:

Is Caryophyllene THE Terpene for Pungent? I'm basing this on Black Pepper having it being said is the reason that Pepper is Pungent too.

But I've also read Myrcene can be "Peppery" too... anyone have good factual information on this?
Myrcene is mangos and like sourish if that makes sense. B-Cary is pungent it’s like that gassy smell but strong pepper too. When I’m nauseous sometime sniffing fresh cracked black pepper helps.

Here’s another chart but the writing is so tiny can be hard to see

I too am a bit obsessed with terpenes. I can smell weed and tell if it’s going to mess my stomach up or not. I’ve never picked up a Skittlez concentrate but from the Blue Cookies x Skittles if I had to guess it has some Humulene or Ocimene in it, maybe both.

best way to get to know them is get small amounts of each of them (they sell them for things like distillate flavoring) and smell them in their raw form. Then you can actually taste and smell what it is and use that in future reference. So if you get a strain that says it tested high for linalool, smoke it, smell it, taste it, and then compare that to your sample of linalool and see if you can find the matching notes.

Yes thank you! This answered so many questions for me! The idea of getting some actual Terpenes is great too as I fi end up using smell a lot and the ones I'm drawn to have some similarities to say the least.

My girl has IBS too and after reading about that I think I've seen very similar results with her stomach issues. Some strains really help that.

Thank you again!
