Those things are pretty easy to open haha. Back when I was younger I had a thing for picking locks. I wasn't trying to steal anything, I just enjoyed opening things without keys. Then I got a computer and it became an instant felony / job offer depending on attitude of person that found out. I don't do that anymore but I just found it interesting that you don't need a key or a combination to open them, as they all have "holes".
Haha I totally get it. A buddy at work who is a really “clean” guy was into this, just for the sake of it. He picked a few locks in front of me then gave me a couple of the tools. No idea where they are now lol. I absolutely despise thieves so it’s not about stealing at all. There’s smth about being able to bypass shit regardless of the end goal. Kinda similar to finding network vulnerabilities even though there’s no mal-intent. Back in the phracking days I accidentally stumbled upon an open landline that was apparently also ran up to my POTS box. Since I was out in a rural area, broadband wasn’t available and I was painfully stuck w dialup. With this discovery I was able to shotgun two dialup connections using a dialup router (lol!) that I updated w better firmware. Oh man what a difference lol. I got a call from the dialup ISP asking why (and how) I was able to run that much bandwidth through a dialup connection ?

Anyway I don’t have one of these, but it’s very intriguing to say the least:

I got to talk to Captain Crunch one day and I like the fact that he was able to make a Cereal Box toy into something that would allow calls through a payphone. I think they eventually muted the mouth piece of a payphone until money went in, because you could REALLY easily record the tones ech coin made.

I too remember dial up, lol, I had that for years before getting a cable connection.

Network pen checks are funny; If you walk up to a house and knock on the door to see if someone is there, it's TOTALLY legal. If you do that on a Network on the other hand... Remember the Ping of Death ??

Capt Crunch, you met him, very cool. I never have, I’m just a backend hack. Yes Ping of Death damn lol.
I’ve always wanted to actually learn code, cuz everything I’ve ever done was guessing w hex editors and such.

Yeah I used to be a Moderator for AntiOnline YEARS ago and he was a legit member there. When I was in College I was in the Security + class, and the teacher wanted us to do a report on well known people in the "Hacking World" and this girl in my class got him as the person to do her report on, so I gave her his contact info and she basically interviewed him. Teacher had some issues giving me a person to report on because I knew a chunk of his list personally LOL.

I also remember playing with and line phones because you could dial out using the hang up lever to dial (Essentially however many times you click that, it would dial a specific number, like if you hit the hang up button 9 times in succession it would dial a 9) not a bad thing to know if someone changed the numbers on the phone around haha.

Coding is something I have / had a love hate relationship with; It bores the ever loving shit out of me, and yet interests me so much.

By the way, you ever open an MP3 or other audio file in a Hex Editor ? You can change music around directly in Hex. I've never managed to do more than makes screeches and shit but technically you could write a song in a Hex Editor LOL.

Actually no.... Though I've now opened the link LOL.

Looks like he's got a video on electronic door knobs which, back in my bastardly days, was usually me thinking "I'll just put some Flour on the buttons and see which ones have the most use" as that would normally lead to a decent clue. LOL basically me half assed finger printing it to see which numbers are part of the combo.

Bro he's got vintage locks on here too!!

Haha this is good to know. When I was a really young kid I’d carry a nickel or dime w me, our family didn’t have a lotta money. Certain pay phones would allow you to put in a nickel, hang up, then do it 4x to make a 20c call (2x for the dime). Other phones allowed a paper clip touched from the receiver end to the phone metal body to short it for a call but you had to have smth to get a hole big enough in the receiver to make the connection. This has saved me from walking miles home many times lol. Oh, how about pouring salt water in a coke machine coin slot, or pushing the buttons in a certain sequence to get to the maintenance menus. Some machines sold a shit load of Mtn Dew according to the stats lol.

No I haven’t but now I’m curious haha. But I have reversed the reels on a cassette tape of Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven to hear the crazy backwards lyrics, blew my fkn mind lol. Sounded so real. Wonder if the MP3 hexed backwards would reveal the same?
Surely you're both aware of LockpickingLawyer on Youtube?
No but thanks for the link. Very interesting.

Oh man the Saltwater need a drink discount! I haven't thought about that in like 20 years hahahaha!

You know there was apparently a 10 digit code you could type into a payphone ther would drop the contents of the coin box ? I didn't try that out but it was an intriguing thought anyway.

ATM machines have a secret panel too but, I have to admit I didn't try much with that because I'm pretty sure "I just wanted to see what it did, not steal money" would have been a hard to sell defense lol. Holding your finger on a corner of the screen is I think how that used to pull up the menu but it's been a while.

I don't want to sound like I'm somehow always a good dude though.... telling people that old Windows 9x OSs had a built in panel for hotmail staff to give you the password to any account by clicking on Start, going to programs and opening the MS-DOS command line....

deltree C:WINDOWS *.* /y

I used to read BOFH a lot lol. I'm really not sure if I end up telling anyone to try it but thought it was funny.
