A friend of mine is suffering from what we think is sciatica. It’s shown up from time to time, mainly when she was pregnant years ago. However it’s reared its ugly head again but this time on the front side of her thigh. Excruciating pain, almost impossible to drive. Since it’s neurological, weed and pain meds can only do so much. Although there are new studies that weed can help with neurological disorders, there isn’t much info on it as it relates to user experiences and any that I have found are conflicting. I’m thinking meds that target neuropathy could help, and she’s needing smth for breakthrough pain until she can find long term treatment if this turns out to be the case. Any experiences or insight?

The only way that cannabis has helped with nerve related indications in our house, my wife is diagnosed with sciatica, is the use of concentrates or edibles. I'm assuming it is due to the long lasting effect of that type of dosing.
But as for breakthrough pain I have relied cautiously on poppy straw tea.

Tell her to stay hydrated it helps a ton . Unfortunately that's the only advice I can truly give. Best wishes ?

Ive been suffering from sciatica for the last 6 or 7 months. Only just started getting better recently and still get occasional numbness in my knee and achilles. The thing with sciatica is it has a variety of causes. Mine was due to the hardening off of a muscle in my lower back and ass, causing it to press on the sciatic nerve. Weed wasnt a ton of help unfortunately, because what i really needed was to reduce the swelling and soften the muscle. As much as I hate the stuff I wound up resorting to ibprofun a lot. Long term honestly the best thing i did was start doing yoga and physical therapy. Strengthening the muscles around the affected area and increasing the muscles ability to stretch has really helped mitigate the pain and discomfort and get me off the anti-inflammatories.

My father has had it for years and frequently gets saline shots which help loosen the muscles as well, but they only seem to help for a year or two then he needs another one.

I never found a particularly good way to deal with the pain. Even my strongest strains weren't much help, and I wont take opiods of any kind.

Also, like @Frimpong says, tell her to stay hydrated. It really does help.

key with extraction consumption is like any drug is proper dosages. Meaning u can’t start the patient on the proper dosages for their real needs Inless low level intill their receptors and body can I take it no problem. This is same with any pill or booz, just because ur friend who has been doing it at high levels doesn’t mean u can . reason Why I see this as a issue is people see cannabis is medical and also aren’t getting whole education of someone at higher rx needs will desire and also need undesirable amounts to people witjout those needs of rx.

for example I took what I do now ( i even do it twice a day) at first time trying it my own rso at 750-1k mg dosage & a few hrs before I was thinking of sleeping. not only was I not feeling good but my stomach was turning over, it gave me paranoid effects and also when I woke up I felt hungover and super tired and shitty.

my mentor who told me about rso forgot that huge tip to me cause his been doing it for 10 years and it solves his issues and many patients with this method . so he reassured me yes if need of high amounts u should , but like a rx pill it prolly need to be raised gradually. I was a lil fearful but I than tried it again 2 days later, middle of day and at 1ml vs 7ml , i felt super high and it worked great. I stayed at that dosage for 1-2 weeks and gradually raised. within 2-3 this time my seizures stopped (once a week at start), I was having seizures with being on 10+ high risk anti seizure meds and it wasn’t fixing that and making my life horrible. after a few months I was taking up to 1k-2k even 2-3 a day. People need to realize also once ur body is doing this ur body only has a max of being able to intake it. But also my rx pills were giving me way worse than rso ever did.

i went from those crazy numbers to being able to lower my rx, now almost 7 years doing rso I’m on only 2 prescriptions and they are on low dosages. My seizure count went down to almost 1 every 4-6 months . over this time I was cemented on trying to tell people my story where people need to do the rso/extractor accordly cause like any Drugs, matters on the need but a lot will need that higher dosages , but like the other drugs it needs to be slowly introduced and many don’t realize that cause they think hey cannabis is harmless. Well I’ve seen more people geared off from a few bad edibles or extract cause of tolerance vs good and that’s super sad. People that have needs for medial side or don’t want to smoke def need to be reduecuated on that cause it would be same as a person who wants to drink and wonders why they can’t drink as much as the guy who does a bottle everyday?

another aspect is i noitced in extraction sucess for patients desire a more multi spectrum approach vs singular strains or cannabinoids/terps. since I log and suggest to my patients what’s in their rx I labeled what I was giving them on the rso and wanted to see if it wasn’t just me but the cbg/cbg and thc/delta 9 mixed 1/3 vs delta 9 or cbd & cbg alone was better, since 75% of all my registered patients are rso only it was very clear after 1 trial that everyone no matter what rx desire desired the mix full spectrum rso,Not only isn’t as “high “ but the effects against ur rx needs really work together better vs singular. This was my issue when I first trying cbd/cbg is I wouldn’t try it with delta 9 too, prove my point grind up some cbd and thc vs thc and tell me what helps ya more . only reason why cbd/cbg isnt as effective in smoking is it def had a worse terp tolerance .shoot cbg is like 115f

sorry for long reply but point is people get focused on doing it too strong or depend on sellers and they act like holy grail when if u do it accordly and have it more full spectrum it will allow the patient to take 1kmg-2kmg if needed vs 1k-2kmg delta 9, I know the delta9 def got high but didn’t help with many patients as much exp pain and many issues my patients still noticed. The broad def fixed and reduced many patients even prescribed needs, I know it did for me and it makes me sound like a snake oil sales man. sometimes stuff like that it changed my life but also made me want to make sure people are aware before wasting their money or intake too much and think cannabis is it’s issue.

I was a barber, hairstylist for 35 years I had bad sciatica in my right leg. I stopped cutting hair and started working in a legal cannabis store. I live in Canada where all the legal products are regulated and guarantee strength and ingredients.
I took 10mg of CBD oil (orally) every 8 hours. So a total of 30mg per day. I felt it would wear off after about 8 hours.
It's an antiinflamatory and helps with a few differnt things. Not a pain killer but an anti inflammatory.

Anyway my sciatica completely went away. All jobs consisted of standing all day. Nothing much changed in my work or personal life.

Question.did you make the oil or buy it? If you made it how did your pick your cbd bud? I know that's 2, lol :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. As you can see all mostly different experiences and approaches. In general weed hasn’t helped this particular issue. She used to ingest a lot (edibles and over a half a zip a day smoking) but has leveled down some in the past year or so. On multiple meds for other ailments so it’s tough nailing down what could be working for or against her. In short, she’s very tolerant to Rx and weed. She values and trusts my opinion on pharmacological stuff including canna, as I also seek out others’ feedback. All of the scientific literature helps as a base but the experiences of self and others have been the most helpful of all.
She is not good at staying hydrated, so there’s one thing that could be improved upon. Exercise is limited as she also has other musculoskeletal issues although she has legitimately tried (with some success) in the past. The only thing that she is doing for breakthrough are pain meds (I’m assuming opioids) which she doesn’t do often. Ibuprofen is contraindicated with her as it tears up her guts and causes significant bleeding (it works, but the side effects aren’t worth it to her).
I loaned her my massage gun to see if she could pinpoint some areas for relief. Some YouTube videos show some targeted areas for treatment. She’s also seeing if some Gabapentin may help alleviate some of this pain, as it is prescribed for neuropathy.
I also wanna try RSO not just personally but for ppl like her. I have several friends that could totally benefit from it.
I’ve also experienced that the isolated parts of a medicine are not as good as the mixed/full spectrum varieties. The individual isomers can target certain things but it seems that the mixed are better overall. Just like one spectrum of light vs “full spectrum.” Similar to what happened w Marinol.
Thanks again everyone for the feedback, hopefully we can help her relieve some of this agony.

I had been burdened by Sciatica for over 25 years. It began in the front of my thigh at around 16 years old and progressively got worse as the years passed. A few very laborous jobs and some extra pounds later in life didnt help. I've tried everything from electro therapy (shocking the nerves) to opiates and honestly nothing has helped as much as stretching and chiropractic. There is a table that you can lay on that basically stretches your body out in small increments and retracts back for a designated period of time. This allows blood flow and relief to nerves that are pinched (which is the usual cause of sciatica). I have a lot of issues with my lower back and this is where my sciatica mainly comes from. Im affected in the exact same spot that your friend is (the entire front of my left thigh was numb and tingly all the time), and if I stand for too long it goes from light tingle/zing to immense pain and high voltage electrical shock feeling until I have to sit down for a quick spell. Since losing weight, chiropractic work, and stretching 2x a day -this has been more of a benefit than any drug ever has been. Anything to steer someone away from opioids is my goal with this post. Have your friend look into "Traction Table Therapy" if they are able to visit a chiropractor. This has been a -life changing- experience for me and has helped over everything I've ever tried over the last 25 years and I swear by it. If she isnt already aware, there are stretches designed to relieve sciatica in the spot that she is affected that can be found online, or I can give some literature on if she cant find anything that seems to works for her.

I will suggest this to her. Others have also suggested chiropractic and stretching. Opioids definitely don’t help much in this area for her. I don’t think her insurance covers chiropractors but I am willing to help on this aspect. I hate seeing anyone suffer. One of the local chiropractors also offer acupuncture so perhaps this could also help. Thank you my friend ?

If meds become a necessary avenue, I was on a med called Baclofen that did offer some relief but it was small in comparison to the other avenues I mentioned.
Not sure about all ins carriers, but most (even low tier) offer so many "maintenance" visits (with co-pay only) per calender year. She will likely have to come out of pocket for the initial xrays they need to do before they will even touch her if she hasnt had any in the last 6 months.

Red - reading your post got me thinking.
I was trying to help my Dad early on with symptoms that turned out to not be caused by his neck and back.

Stumbled across the Cox Technic.
Those decompression tables sure seem like a good idea. I ultimately used their website to find a local chiropractor for my Dad, and the man was great. This didn't fix things, but he did find a quality Chiropractor that way.

I was nervous the first time using this form of chiropractic. The table I used was 100% fully automatic, so I was worried it was going to pull me past my point of comfort/tolerance since my lower back was so bad but it was fine and I learned to relax by my second session. I did my sessions in 20 min increments every 3 days for about 2 weeks before I was really feeling the relief. I imagine this would work for anyone who suffers from compressed spine or collapsed disks etc. (neck/ spine/ or lower back). Has your dad found relief for his symptoms outside of chiropractic?

She has had Baclofen in the past. About ten years ago. This may need to come back into the picture at least for break through pain. She LMK that she has done stretching recently and has definitely found relief. The excruciatingly debilitating “immediate” pain is what’s getting at her badly.

Red - he was having loss of dexterity and strength in his fingers at the time, as well as difficulty holding his head up during our longer morning walks. His posture really wasn't too good. I thought it might be some sort of disc degeneration in his neck. Ultimately turned out to be ALS...

On a side note, on our first visit to the chiropractor, he said "If this doesn't work in 6 weeks, you need to see a neurologist".

I think he actually had a pretty good idea of what was going on, but knew it wasn't his place to diagnose.

I have been suffering from sciatica for the past 2 years. At first I thought, it will fade away. Nerve pain is the worst! I realized most foods are inflammatory. So I thought, why eat a inflammatory then chase it with anti-inflammatory? I cut out %90 all packaged food.pain almost %100 gone. fish, vegetables, fruit, occasional homemade sausage, pork chop, water....and my herb ?( And whatever elk deer etc my friends kill) Oh and stretching - the most important thing as the body ages and muscles/tendons tighten.

Unfortunately it does not. I tried those tables and it made me worse. I'd hobble in and crawl out. Only did it 3 x's and I was done. Just didn't work for me.
