Don't you mean they found the pheno "cheese" in skunk #1. So exodus cheese is the pheno they found in skunk #1. That's how it evolved. Remember skunk #1 was worked by sam skunkman I believe several filial before being released. Skunk 1 is a fruitier version on the rks he found. For what it's worth it's early here, I'm getting kids ready for school and trying to remember convos I've seen. I believe I read Sam said he had rks seeds but couldn't be bothered going back to work that line. Neville from Neville's haze was mentioned in the thread with the convo. Imagine or somewhere still has it. I believe your best bet is to look at trade/flight routes destinations around the time they found it. World was alot bigger and not as readily explored. Afghan definitely, Thai maybe and central/south American probably went into the make up. They used what was available at the time to breed with.
Thinking you're going to breed back a trait that was bred out is going to be a long stretch. Not saying you can't, the genetic code is there passed down if somewhat recessive. But hey don't die wondering. Nothing ventured = nothing gained.
I would love to see your hunt for every cheese strain on the planet. You'd be the cheese guru. Imagine that blokes hunting for cheese and you're the provenance king.
Happy hunting
Yeah I probably should have worded that as "Cheese is Skunk" LOL.
But yeah I've read about Skunk #1 for a multitude of personal reasons / personal interest in that line (I mean Cheese obviously is a huge part of that) but I also liked the dude who did that; I read an interview with him and he was like totally humble about it. I know from what I've personally read, that Afghani (Which doesn't really narrow too much down given how many land race strains probably grow there) would be the most likely to produce the smell we would expect.
There's a web site, the Indian Land Race Exchange, and they go and get seeds from farmers in a bunch of areas, and take pictures, and even have a part telling you what Phenotypes they have seen from the seeds.

Flavours reported on different phenotypes of mazari almost cover most things which can be smelled off of a cannabis plant. In order of frequency of occurrence intrapopulation wise – Fermented fruits/sweet melon Diesel/earth foul/rotten protein, sewage sludge like foul smells, which are rarely to be smelled as the dominant smells.
^ I mean shut up and TAKE my money right? LOL. But that tells me that it's entirely possible that, bred with others, like the Sativa strains you mentioned, could indeed lead to what became known as Skunk #1. Now, I'd consider something like this a labor of love; As you rightly said; There's "theoretically" a chance of finding that, but I wouldn't expect a pat on the back and stock in some weird cookies thing either LOL. But being how Cheese came from Skunk, I have a hefty respect for the guys here that are searching for it.
I think personally some of the smells, particularly when they mention "Acrid" that stand out, and from what I know of Skunk #1, that wasn't just him tossing a male in with some females and breeding the resulting plants; From what I understand he bred and selected plants for multiple generations before he found and released Skunk #1. That's a LOT of work. I have a healthy respect for the effort that was put in to it, and I would really love to see someone find it again.
I personally don't know what the monetary value of RKS would be these days, though I've heard there's a lot of interest, but personally? I'd send it to everyone here free. And then maybe cut a clone and see if I could trade a clone of it for access to a lab to "play" with some Cheese and Chem LOL. I'd love that haha!
Thank you
At the end of the day, I really want to smoke some REAL Skunk. But in what I mean by real, I want to to stink LOL. I have to admit I would love for a TCP/IP Sniffer to allow actual smells to be sent over the internet cause the closest thing to Skunk I've personally seen, is a Blue Cheese I did this passed season.
I know I talk about that one a lot, but it's just so intriguing the way it smells; Like a dead skunk and Cat Piss..... And some sweet berries on the back end, but VERY low level.... The pungency of the Skunky Cat Piss is the dominant scent for sure.
