thinking of going solar wondering what it would take to run a 240 watter (LED) size of solar panel, converter, ect ? maybe not even worth it !! thoughts ??

Since the US govt. is addicted to giving away money, it will just be a matter of time before solar panel rebates come our way. I was going to set up my whole house, but decided to wait for the above mentioned free cash!. My project would cost about 8 grand, before batteries. I estimated that it would take 5-6 years to recover my original investment. This was from an estimate from 10 months ago, so it should still be in the ballpark...

Solar is a fuckin joke and a waste of time...solar won't even keep my electric fence up and running...had to hard wire 120v 12a out there to be safe.
I'm an electrician by trade...Master since '02 journeyman since 1985...anyways...I get at least 2 calls a week from people that have been yoked by some jackass selling them solar something. I does not work...rainy cloudy overcast nighttime...only bright sunny days and then the battery packs...they work good for about a year but then they degrade and it's not worth shit.
I cannot tell you how many bought these junk ass solar back up generators for about 20,000 and then end up buying a natural gas 24kvw general generator from me for 15,000 to only then be satisfied that for the next 20 years if you take care of it properly and even beyond.

We are so far past the Boondocks that when our power goes out, it could be weeks before it's back up. 3 summers ago, we had no grid power for 6 bloody weeks. We have a generator, but, damn, what a pain.
I did a small solar set up with a 200ah lithium battery for my camper, powers everything I need indefinitely.
84 qt fridge freezer, lighting, charging stuff etc, and it does great for that. However it wouldn't handle that constant draw for a light like that 240 you mentioned. Especially if you add in the rest of your home and it's needs.
You'd need a pretty large solar array, and a massive battery bank for it to work right. Even the best batteries out there atm only have a 4 to 10 yr lifespan depending on setup and usage. Batteries are also the most expensive part of the whole off grid solar setup. So keep that in mind when doing the math for cost savings over time.
I've got solar on my home as well, it does pay for itself. For my home though it's tied to the electric grid, doesnt work if the powers out. Makes my meter roll back though if I'm not using what its making.

I wouldn't hold my breath that free money as they already did it. Back in the 2000s my dad put a $40k system on his house, half paid for by uncle sam (us citezens). The system is overkill, he ran his ac and dryer at the same time just to spite exel cause the buyback rate is so low. He generated way more than he needed with no way of recouping as the buback is only in the form of bill credits for grid juice used, won't cover fees of being connrected to grid, can't get cash for it.

My neighbor bypasses the low rate sorta by only selling back to the utility provider at night (Teala battery system won't sell back when when battery is below 30% (user settng).

In looking how to power my greenhouse the solar generators (2-$5k) are in play. Given the cost to have an electrician like @18B run condit both options are in the same ballpark. The electrician option would take care of everything including heat but lets be honest electric heat is not the way one should go (unless you have a surpluss of juice).
There certainly is a need to consider the application before making a statment of which is the right way to go.

You nailed it . Biggest fucking waste of money for me after our Government promised a heap of feed into the grid contributions , incentives etc and then left those that bought in high and dry . I’m so fucked off I feel like ripping them off my roof and shoving them up out local party reps ass . I got $77 credit taken off my last power bill (3months usage ) for a 7.5kw system .
