Since the US govt. is addicted to giving away money, it will just be a matter of time before solar panel rebates come our way. I was going to set up my whole house, but decided to wait for the above mentioned free cash!. My project would cost about 8 grand, before batteries. I estimated that it would take 5-6 years to recover my original investment. This was from an estimate from 10 months ago, so it should still be in the ballpark...
I wouldn't hold my breath that free money as they already did it. Back in the 2000s my dad put a $40k system on his house, half paid for by uncle sam (us citezens). The system is overkill, he ran his ac and dryer at the same time just to spite exel cause the buyback rate is so low. He generated way more than he needed with no way of recouping as the buback is only in the form of bill credits for grid juice used, won't cover fees of being connrected to grid, can't get cash for it.
My neighbor bypasses the low rate sorta by only selling back to the utility provider at night (Teala battery system won't sell back when when battery is below 30% (user settng).
In looking how to power my greenhouse the solar generators (2-$5k) are in play. Given the cost to have an electrician like
@18B run condit both options are in the same ballpark. The electrician option would take care of everything including heat but lets be honest electric heat is not the way one should go (unless you have a surpluss of juice).
There certainly is a need to consider the application before making a statment of which is the right way to go.
