Spilt Milk

River of no return - infrastructure failure in Montana could greatly reduce flow of Milk River

This is horrendous news, for wildlife across the continental divide. One summer ,years ago, this river ran dry , WITH the diversion in place.

So many fragile ecosystems here. Sage grouse, Kit Fox, Horned toad. This breaks my heart.
Every campy photo I have ever posted, is on this river.
This is horrifying for me.

This is the first inch of the Missouri. An international agreement (over 120 years old, remember, that flume was older than the Titanic) requires the United States to divert a specific amount of water to Canada . And for their part Canada, agrees to allow a percentage to flow through, back to Montana.
Incredibly foresighted, it allowed the settlement of the Prairie.

Observe for one moment if you will, how well our countries are collaborating right now. If the Americans decide to source different water for Havre ; this whole 49th parallel, across Montana and Alberta will dry up and blow away.

The more I think about this,,, the more I think about this.
I need to get down there, and say Goodbye.

I keep telling myself that " this is the way it is supposed to be "
Without supplements , 200 years ago, this river always looked like this.
Everything I knew about this river is false.
In the span of the ages, it was hardly even there.

I was explaining the concept of nuclear winter to my daughters, as we strolled up the bed, ankle deep.
The moment the sun goes out, the result is set in stone.
Photosynthesis stops, the food chain is broken. It becomes a finite countdown to when the last sandwich is eaten.

Is this river dead? How can these particular fish survive hot water without oxygen. How can they winter in water that does not flow?

I taught my boys to swim in this water, look how smoth and safe the bed is. No jags no sleepers no deadheads, hard to find litter, never mind broken glass.
Trees dont even grow on most of it. It was basically a kiddie pool that went for miles.

This is how I remember it from last summer 20190828_135317.jpg

Carried this phatazz through rosebush, half a mile. Cant hardly walk. Thinks she is a lifeguard.

In Alberta only a sucker repairs a cracked windshield. A drive on any road flings more rocks at you than you can imagine.

you replace them when its spider web cracks all over the place.

The speed traps should be outlawed though. What a money grab. 2 tickets within 59 seconds and only 800 for a flight to fight it.

Welcome to AB :D

It was the most narrow point, I was pulling up good grade. Rolled for a photo- didn't want to stop.

Everything you say is true @OldG. However, we do have some liberties that most do not. I have never been smog tested. I have NEVER had a vehicle inspected. If it drives- you can run it. Exhaust, diy lifts, mods, whatever. I have seen stingrays jacked on tractor tires. Its all good.

Got that first photo when I was leaving a campground found on natural spring that is slightly above the river grade. Truly a diamond in the rough.

Buffalo so big, you gotta look twice, just to see the whole thing.

Geographically speaking, this is a closed oxbow

Squint hard enough and you can see Montana back there.

Happy Day.
Oct 8th.
We were unstoppable.
Lethbridge News Now: St. Mary Canal repairs complete, water flows to return to normal in Milk River.

This is a beach on the Milk that we first found in 2017

So happy.
I was stuck in a dwang.
I willed this water to return.

A lot of you Albertans have been hiking up over into Sask these days. There’s still room.. and we get a away with even shittier vehicles.
here is a pleasant anecdote to cheer you up. I Just picked up a wild farm rig of a squarebody. 75 3/4 ton with the 1 ton rear suspension. She’s a raunchy bitch. Glass.. rough.. interior.. rough.. but that sweet ol 350 v8.. also rough actually.. The clutch.. kinda still does something. The 4 speed Trans and crazy work gearing.. Nothin like screamin down the highway in 4th doing 55mph lol.. but she could pull a barn down no problem and even I can fix it. This is my 3rd squarebody (not talking all the vans) and I’m gonna cherish this ol stinky oil burnin bitch.. I promise. Now i just gotta pick up an early 90s yota 4x4.. waisted a few of those back in the day. Basically anything Africa grade translates where I’m at but has to have a good heater. A/C can frig right off tho bud. We occasionally have long ass drives with no gas stations of the 6-7 hour variety so a big ass Jerry can or two for the back is my next “upgrade” for the chev. already seafoamed the carb and the new air and fuel and oil filters. also got a second battery fitted. Here’s a pic of the “good fender” ?
