Storing seeds in fridge

Im currently growing out seeds that I carelessly stored and wow its incredible how they degrade when you store them like a bonehead.

So a quick question... I have a newer fridge and you can tell its newer because the ability to adjust the thing is seriously limited. The best setting I can find is 37 degrees F.
Ive got my precious beans stored in a paper bag in the fridge:

Is this gonna be OK? I gotta be covert and this is the best solution... paper bag way in the back

Fridge for the win on short storage like a year, the freezer for longer.
I'd at least use some kind of airtight container though, i even through a dessicant pack in.

I put the seeds I've chucked in tiny labeled glass viles..The viles into baggies..the baggies buried in white rice in a one gallon jar that's stored in the fridge..Breeder packs in a separate one gallon jar in baggies also buried in rice .One thing I can tell ya is I again popped some beans the beginning of this year that I chucked at least 12 years ago with excellent germination...I believe @woodhippy successfully popped some of those beans also..Still have a keeper cut Moco menthol going out of those beans..I learned this from a older grower on RIU lots of years ago and have never done it any other way.. Literally thousands of beans in there that have some major age on them that would still pop with no problem

The biggest problem with a freezer is if there is any moisture in the seeds it will destroy them when frozen. Refrigerators can be a problem too because they have a tendency to freeze at times, then thaw, then freeze - which can be problematic itself. Cold basements work great.

Spot on mate. I was paranoid of light degradation with fridge light going on and working it's way through the jar. So I macgyvered it with black duct tape.
I have a coffee jar that's sealed breeders packs that has a couple of inches rices on bottom then stacked and filled with rice and the dessicant packs you get with burrito kits etc over here. Couple of them thrown in for good measure and rice to top. I wish I knew this trick years ago with old beans I had that wouldn't fire. These have been a God send. Cheap and into the bar fridge crisper down bottom I haven't had seeds down for too long, 4 years maybe but they all fire with 9/10 success. I have another one with some pollen vials too. Pollen vial, a couple rice grains in them then buried. Those are going on a year old so I'll see how they work for this year

Sounds like ya might need another fridge bro! Lol

I use a pelican case for seeds, not fucking around with my beans!.. Easy to grab and go in a “S.H.T.F” moment.
Some things are replaceable, but some things just aren’t!
We invest in our seeds, even if we bred them for ourselves, why not give them the protection!?..
I keep the pelican case in the basement where it’s a little bit cooler and the case is air tight and water tight.. a couple of dehydration packs and an oxygen eater pack, good to go!
I would only “winter” them if I was going to crack them shortly there after.. I’m weird that way though!..lol

I have been thinking about a fridge just for beers and beans..My seeds have traveled many years with me...Put it this way..A divorce after 21 years that I wanted to just go smooth as possible...When I left I took what I was wearing...My truck and my seeds....true story! And if I didn't have to get to work I wouldn't have given a shit about the truck?. Many things are replaced very easily...Somebody mess with my seeds they are flat out in danger

Good advice all above. So this is just an anecdote. I got 2 TGA Dairy Queen seeds from The Attitude in 2012 as freebies, and shortly afterward traded a guy for a 5 pack which I ran. The 2 freebies have been in the original plastic sleeve in a plastic tupperware container all this time with other seeds and a few desicant packs. They've probably been in and out of the refrigerator 30 to 40 times over the years. I decided to do a run of all my non Brisco cheese beans and included these with no expectation that they'd germ, but 1 of 2 did after a 4 day soak. I'll leave the other a few more days to shock me. Just thought the experience fit the thread. You never know.

There are far too many “shit hit the fan” possibilities/ scenarios to mention, but that right there, is right up at the top of the list!
With the current state of global affairs, a “bugout bag“ isn’t far off from a “must have”, and mine happens to have seeds of all kinds.
Flowers too.. to attract pollinators ?

Cheese for the win! YES!

If I end up with the one, the hope is for a Sheila that I can clone and reverse for a preservation of sorts.

Oh I love you....

I'm not sure I Believe this or not, but; Apparently "Chemdog" had the Chemdog "magic beans" in a fridge for over 20 years and they still sprouted. Again, just because he is well known, and somehow found the most sought after bag seed I've ever heard of literally ever, doesn't mean it's true. I don't know that dude at all, and have never met him, but I do LOVE Chemdog, and basically every strain that was crossed with it that I've had, so God only knows if all 13 of those beans were in fact legit from bag seed of some ounce he paid 600 for through the mail....

I'll be honest here; I've not ever in my life paid 600 dollars for an ounce....However, if I had a time machine, and I knew it was going to be THE Chemdog, and that it had 13 beans in it ALL of which have been named, and I had 600 dollars to blow.... Yeah I'd buy it. I mean shit if Chemdog, Chem's Sis, Chem 4, Chem D, Chem'91 all came out of a single purchase of ONE bag of weed.... I can see me going for it. Then I'd time machine myself back here and send out all 13 seeds for someone here to do a preservation run to give to our members.

I know not everyone is cool with "bag seed" but between all the Chemdogs AND Gorilla Glue; Clearly some hall of fame weed strains have come from it.
