You pop more seeds in a month than I do in a year lol I expect to be walking in 2 weeks then I can view in person how my 4x4 grow is going the wife says I've got all kinds of little cotton balls going on I'm guessing I'll harvest right before Thanksgiving

Hahaha yeah bud, I can't help myself. I care more about all the different strains that I can try than yield most of the time at this point

Bet your excited to get back in the tents huh? Just not the same seeing it all second hand. Pretty awesome your wife was able to keep it going for you!

So things are definitely going better but we're still running into all kinds of minor annoyances.

FVK F2s germ rate is awful again. Like 40%. So if anyone really wants to try that cross I'm happy to send them out but I'm not gonna be passing them around like I had hoped unfortunately. Trying some HS33 S1s now and they don't seem to lively either. Working on another round of clones though and I still have plenty of pollen so I'll be trying again shortly even if these ones don't work out.

Also, I think the root aphids are back, in the Bahlki this time, which is really frustrating. That's in a separate tent, in a separate room, with brand new soil, and brand new planters. Which means they're almost definitely coming from the hydro shop, or they just straight up live in my old ass house. I'm better prepared this time though. Got the soil drench going, gonna top the pots with playground sand and keep the sticky traps out for the adults. We're gonna win this battle this time.

I recently started covering my pots with a mix of perlite and mosquito bites. I'm also mixing in h2o2 and Neem oil with every water.
I just push it over and add my top dressing then push it back over. I don't want to say it but I'm finally winning against this buggers.

Forgive my ignorance but what is FVK?
When you want to pass out some Hippie Slayer I'm down.

FVK (Fearless Vampire Killers) is a cross I made that's Hippy Slayer 33 x GMO #7 BX1 (Lifehouse). It's got some super potent funky potential but for whatever reason the Hippy Slayer is tough to breed with apparently. All my other chucks have resulted in healthy beans and great germ rates. Both of the Hippy Slayer chucks made pale ass beans that don't wanna crack. It's certainly possible the pest problems played a role here too. I'm gonna keep working on it. If I can get even a dozen of the FVK F2s going (I have a few hundred beans) I'll do an F3 generation and hopefully get better germ rates.

I tried a perlite top layer and it didn't seem super effective, then because I was trying to use the Roots top dressing nutrients I couldnt use anything as a preventative layer, which is part of why I'm moving away from it. Diatomaceous earth was the most effective but it's too messy and stops working when wet because it cakes up. So now I'm gonna try sand! I need to get more h202, for some reasons my local convenience stores are always out. Might have to break down and use the Zon.

I read Neem oil and bits works great for the thrips and gnats but isn't as effective against the aphids but I may give it a shot as well anyways. I'm just gonna hit them with everything.

Wow that has got to be an awesome cross (Buffy?) I love that name.

It's been very hard for me to get H2o2 and distilled water. My wife thinks everyone is growing here. Lol

Haha I don't think she's wrong. It's not just cannabis though, during quarantine everyone started gardens, even in the cities. Lot of indoor gardens and tropical plants that all require the same things we do. The reason I keep having to buy soil and coco from the hydro shop even though I'm suspect of their storage practices is the local Agways have had nothing but Miracle Gro all summer! I've lucked out and swung through a few times on delivery day and was able to grab some Coast of Maine but otherwise I've mostly left empty handed.

Buffy was actually a strong contender for a strain name but I don't want to steal @Amos Otis schtick lol. The name Fearless Vampire Killers actually references both a favorite song of mine by Bad Brains, as well as the late 70s movie that I grew up loving.

I will check both out as I have never heard of either but I'm always learning of new/old awesomness thanks

Well obviously didn't get a new thread going. Kinda waiting until I get the 12/12 tent going. Everything is germinating slow right now. By my standards anyways, I'm used to everything be up in 48 hrs but for whatever reason it's taking longer this time

Hippy Slayer 33 was 100% germ rate in the first test though! Only 3 beans but a good sign nonetheless. Gonna run them in the 12/12 tent and see how they do. It will be real nice to know I have a backup if I lose the cut after all these pest problems. The mom is heavily infested with what I initially thought was root aphids but which I'm now thinking are thrip pupae... I dunno, I'm not an entomologist lol. Still waiting to see if any clones take.

Meanwhile, the Athena IPM is doing nothing anymore. Initially it seemed to get the infestation in check but I'm starting to think that may have been a coincidence. I pour it on and just watch the little creeps scurry about anyways. Virtually no effect at all. So I won't be wasting money on that product again. Hopefully the sand helps prevent them from emerging once I get it down. I got sidetracked yesterday and forgot to pick it up.

Feel like my entire grow is just an expirement in IPM at this point lol. Thought having the tents empty for a few weeks would help, but nope, here we are again!

The bugs this year are crazy. I can't seem to shake them either. Hopefully things turn around for you soon.
Yeah, it's crazy, as I read up on how to deal with them I just keep hearing over again about how they're all becoming more prevelant and durable as cannabis cultivation and home gardening become more popular. We're creating the perfect environment for them to thrive in.

At this point I just want to get them contained before they hit the flying stage...

The only bug I've ever had to deal with has been fungus gnats. They used to drive me crazy trying to get rid of them, but I've been using this for a few years now. I just added another column to my spreadsheet and make sure I crumble some Dunks into my containers at least every 30 days and the problem is solved.

I don't know if your pests lay their eggs in your medium, but if so, this may help.

Yeah, I just grabbed some mosquito bits to mix into the sand actually. Not sure how effective they are with these particular pests but I'm throwing everything at them at this point. Strangely enough, I haven't seen gnats at all in weeks. Maybe the Athena works for them lol? Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah, I'm a big lost coast fan, but it doesn't do much for the guys living in the soil itself. Excellent for eliminating thrips and other pests that are above the surface!
