How do you decide which to keep, are there quiet ones?
Yeah, some are definitely noisier than others. It's a little hard to tell though because one or two tend to be dominant, and then when you remove them sometimes the more docile ones will suddenly become more loud and aggressive. But basically it's their behavior and noise. Ideally the keeper roos will only crow a couple times a day and won't actively harm the hens while mating. And obviously they can't be aggressive towards people, especially kids, which can actually be pretty common. Some people go by looks but since I'm not breeding to sell their offspring I don't care much about that.

Most of these were easy choices. Two were super aggressive towards the hens and were hurting the girls, and one crowed virtually all day. Like every ten minutes from 6am until 6pm. He was also psychotic and would fly around crashing into the coop walls when I went to collect the eggs. The coop is way more peaceful without them. Then one had a leg injury so that was a mercy choice. So only one that I butchered was a tough call to be honest. He was kind of chill, but I couldn't keep him and no one wants roos right now. Im only keeping one rooster at the moment. If I remember I'll post a picture of him tomorrow.

I am assuming you are able to eat the ones you culled? and are using butcher to denote a different act?

I think silkies (sp?) are cool and the ones I have seen are docile. I have been interisted in chickens ever since I based my arduino grow controller off a design for a an automated chicken coup. It had an automatic door, light system for initiating the chickens and feed. No means of handeling the back end waste though lol.

Yeah, definitely. Roosters are a little tougher to cook (literally lol) but are mighty tasty. They're definitely a low and slow or super fast kind of meat, anything in between is no bueno. Make the best stock imaginable though. And ya, when I say butcher I mean it in the preparing meat for consumption sense.

Silkies are awesome and I've heard the roosters are pretty mellow, but they can definitely still be loud! I have a silkie Marans cross and shes my loudest hen by far. You know when she's laying an egg lol.

And I've seen those automated coops, they seem amazing! I'd love a setup like that someday. Best thing I've done for the waste cleanup is change my coop bedding to river sand to be honest. It's like a giant litter box now lol. But way easier to maintain.... The shit floats to the top so you just rake it out once a week, and unlike straw or shavings, sand doesn't have to compost so your not waiting a year for all that stuff to break down. Just have to add a bucket of sand once a week, change it once a year. I tried the deep compost bedding method first and could never get it to work. Just smelled awful and was a ton of work to maintain. Plus with sand you can just add diatomaceous earth to it and they'll bathe themselves in it to prevent mites from taking hold and the sand is good grit. All around game changer.

Here's a picture of the rooster we kept. He only crows twice a day and is super chill. 20210830_144028.jpg

Plant Destroyer
Yes indeed, fall has arrived here in the PNW.
Our weather just turned to shit, so today I’ve gotta figure out which plants are coming inside to finish and which ones will have to deal with wet & cold.
Either way, I’m going to do some major pruning to improve airflow.
For the short bushy types, that usually means removing most of the center.
I’ll go ahead and harvest anything with milky trichome tips, even if they aren’t quite done.
Chopping early is a bummer but bud rot is worse….

In Bloom
Plenty warm in the Heat Dome. Noticed jalapeños are blooming again. Hit them with Neptune Harvest, along with tomatoes.

Nice ambling up ski trail this morning with my canine pal.

Have been in the whack and trim mode lately, mostly photoperiods. GT Haze/ Tangie, a lemon Thai, and Israeli CBD plant, not hemp, Avidekle. Two outdoor Blackberry Train Wrecks are almost ready. Glistening good!!! Last but not least,. GG#4 coming into her own.

Love harvest season...veggies, fruit, ganja galore! Mmmmm!

Hope everyone's Sunday is a good one!

@Gentlemancorpse hell yeah, I always laugh at those goofy buggers. I posted them burning the Aussies over in the Oz thread a while back :ROFLMAO:.

What did you do today?

Bought my first house yesterday. Take possession next week. Finally escaping the city to become a country gentleman stinky old hermit. :punkrocker::carlton:

Started a list of fishing lakes and rivers, and without really digging I've already got 7 spots within 50 km and 8 more within 100. As I learn the area a bit better, this list will grow. Bump it up to a 150 km radius and I've got spots to explore for as long as I am mobile. :)

Thanks Red. :)

I was angling to get out back in the late 90's but had to put the plan on hold for a couple decades.
I was finally able to start the search back in the Spring, and it has been an experience. Lots to learn about so many topics, but the end result is I am mortgage- and debt-free and mostly retired, living in a place I want to be, while young and healthy enough to enjoy it.
I won't be globe trotting or eating surf'n'turf, but that never was my style anyway. Just gonna grow my little garden, catch some fish, shoot the occasional bambi, maybe get back into curling if my knees will take it. Just gonna disappear into my own world and ignore the rest of the planet's bullshit. :)

Sounds like you have a good plan. Just gotta figure out how to get the wife working remotely so you can accelerate it. ;)

Got some garage cabinets installed today, what a huge difference it's made. Lol. Laundry tub sink yet to be installed in the cabinet next to the fridge.

Finally have a place to work again, and a chill spot to have a smoke break to boot. ???

Still lots more to go putting shit away, but it's a huge step so far.
Would've been done sooner, but had to spend the other day cleaning out the kitchen sink line. I'd never needed to do it in 14 yrs here, and some JA had decided to patch over the clean out. Wtf, lol. Made an access panel, and need to get the sofa back in place now. Always something going on. Lol.

Least it was only kitchen sink drainage, and not toilet water. Lol. Still smelled blech, ? , but it's done now, and all runs great again.

My list is now up to 44 fishing spots within a 150 km radius.

Checked out the nearest one yesterday, at the river, and met a couple guys who had each driven over an hour to fish there. They've both had great luck there in the past, so I was pretty happy to learn there is a very productive spot five minutes from my door. (y)(y)

I walked a mile or two of riverbank while I was there, just checking it out for fishing spots and looking at animal tracks. I'm really enjoying educating myself to identify more different types. Yesterday I saw so many, some I could ID and many I could only guess. I saw moose, deer, coyote, beaver, muskrat and either lynx or bobcat that I was certain of. I also saw what may have been wolf, racoon and otter as well as many others. Even though we don't officially have raccoons here, I have seen trail cam pics of the little fuckers, and have shown tracks to people who moved from places with a 'coon population who confirmed my guess. There was also fresh bear scat on a gravel bank(so no tracks).

I am so happy to be out in nature again, where I belong.:)

Went back to the river yesterday. It was a gorgeous Autumn day, +12 or above, calm and sunny. Landed 4 or 5 decent walleye and lost a bunch more. They were still biting when I left, but it was full dark and I couldn't see my slip bobber.

Today it was 2C and windy but I toughed it out long enough to land 2 pike and one wallie. I'm loving having this spot so close. Going to take advantage as long as I can before freeze-up.
