How do you decide which to keep, are there quiet ones? There were too many dicks on the dance floor so I fixed it.... NSFV (not suitable for vegans) View attachment 80012 View attachment 80013 View attachment 80014
Chickens by the way are metal as fuck... kept trying to drink the blood of their brothers. Even I was getting a little disturbed...
Yeah, some are definitely noisier than others. It's a little hard to tell though because one or two tend to be dominant, and then when you remove them sometimes the more docile ones will suddenly become more loud and aggressive. But basically it's their behavior and noise. Ideally the keeper roos will only crow a couple times a day and won't actively harm the hens while mating. And obviously they can't be aggressive towards people, especially kids, which can actually be pretty common. Some people go by looks but since I'm not breeding to sell their offspring I don't care much about that. How do you decide which to keep, are there quiet ones?
I am assuming you are able to eat the ones you culled? and are using butcher to denote a different act?Yeah, some are definitely noisier than others. Most of these were easy choices. Two were super aggressive towards the hens and were hurting the girls, and one crowed virtually all day. Like every ten minutes from 6am until 6pm. He was also psychotic and would fly around crashing into the coop walls when I went to collect the eggs. The coop is way more peaceful without them. Then one had a leg injury so that was a mercy choice. So only one that I butchered was a tough call to be honest. He was kind of chill, but I couldn't keep him and no one wants roos right now. Im only keeping one rooster at the moment. If I remember I'll post a picture of him tomorrow.
Yeah, definitely. Roosters are a little tougher to cook (literally lol) but are mighty tasty. They're definitely a low and slow or super fast kind of meat, anything in between is no bueno. Make the best stock imaginable though. And ya, when I say butcher I mean it in the preparing meat for consumption sense.I am assuming you are able to eat the ones you culled? and are using butcher to denote a different act?
I think silkies (sp?) are cool and the ones I have seen are docile. I have been interisted in chickens ever since I based my arduino grow controller off a design for a an automated chicken coup. It had an automatic door, light system for initiating the chickens and feed. No means of handeling the back end waste though lol.
Yes indeed, fall has arrived here in the PNW.
Ya bastid! I'm going to have that stuck in my brain now. There were too many dicks on the dance floor

Bonus trivia: the guy leading the conga line was one of the original Village People.

Thanks brother. It's been on the list for a long time, but for a lot of life-related reasons, it couldn't happen. Now I'm finally going back to my country roots and couldn't be happier. That's a big deal. Congrats!!!
Congrats! Thats a huge accomplishment, and Im a bit jealous lol. I moved out of the hood to the burbs some years ago and now Im fixated on getting out of the burbs to a quiet property in northern MI after the wife retires. Til then I can live the "quiet life" vicariously through you guys haha@Gentlemancorpse hell yeah, I always laugh at those goofy buggers. I posted them burning the Aussies over in the Oz thread a while back .

Started a list of fishing lakes and rivers, and without really digging I've already got 7 spots within 50 km and 8 more within 100. As I learn the area a bit better, this list will grow. Bump it up to a 150 km radius and I've got spots to explore for as long as I am mobile.
My list is now up to 44 fishing spots within a 150 km radius.Started a list of fishing lakes and rivers, and without really digging I've already got 7 spots within 50 km and 8 more within 100.
That's friggin Awesomesauce, sounds like a dream spot to me. One of these days I'll be able to make that step to the country again. Envious of your new spot mang, so friggin cool, so happy for you. ???My list is now up to 44 fishing spots within a 150 km radius.
Checked out the nearest one yesterday, at the river, and met a couple guys who had each driven over an hour to fish there. They've both had great luck there in the past, so I was pretty happy to learn there is a very productive spot five minutes from my door.
I walked a mile or two of riverbank while I was there, just checking it out for fishing spots and looking at animal tracks. I'm really enjoying educating myself to identify more different types. Yesterday I saw so many, some I could ID and many I could only guess. I saw moose, deer, coyote, beaver, muskrat and either lynx or bobcat that I was certain of. I also saw what may have been wolf, racoon and otter as well as many others. Even though we don't officially have raccoons here, I have seen trail cam pics of the little fuckers, and have shown tracks to people who moved from places with a 'coon population who confirmed my guess. There was also fresh bear scat on a gravel bank(so no tracks).
I am so happy to be out in nature again, where I belong.
Thank you very much. That's very cool to say.?so friggin cool, so happy for you
