I reckon they’d have a crack at the dog as well if it got within rangeLooks wonderful.?
And those damn pelicans are eating your fish and not mine. ?

I've hated those things since I learned they can eat close to their weight in fish daily(Noticing a pattern with my critter feuds?). They weren't around here 30 years ago but now there's too many. Most other fishermen I know hate them too. A flock of half a dozen can have a big effect on one of our little pothole lakes.I reckon they’d have a crack at the dog as well if it got within range
That's fucked up man. At least get them drunk first.I know this isn't always a popular thing to say, but birds are good bait for Pike. Just throwing that out there lol
I'd use the Hitchcock method; soak bread in liquor before I go fishing with Irish Pigeons lolThat's fucked up man. At least get them drunk first.
Back on the river yesterday! Twice a week seems to be about what I got in the tank these days, so I'm treating these days like gold. Little bound up this morning, but all worth it in the end. Challenged myself to fish some areas that haven't historically been as productive as some others, and had a good, fun day with lots of fish, from 6 inches on up to 16 or so. Was able to shoal-hop all the way across and get on the opposing bank, which opens up some holes that receive no pressure unless a kayaker comes along. Took my phone for some shots, and *of course* managed to slip and fall halfway in, getting the phone wet. No damage to the phone, though, and the only damage ol' Hugh sustained was pride related.
Trailhead - Going down is still easy, but I swear they make it steeper coming out every year.

Make it to the water just as the sun gets in the canyon.

Water's dropping and the shoals are showing themselves

That calm spot in the very center of the frame is a wicked good spot

Don't get much autumn color here, but what we got's getting started

Different look at the shoals

Better look at a Shoal Bass - Vertical barring is a little more visible

You know, I have to admit, when I was walking in yesterday, I started thinking about catfish and/or gar, and how I thought I could target them if I wanted to. I certainly have the gear to go after them, and would a 20# flouro leader would prolly keep a gar on the line? Or a metal one def would. Every now and then I get a catfish with a plastic senko. I got bit off by a gar yesterday on my last cast of the day. Hit like a freight train and then gone! That would be a fun experiment to try, but I'm like laser focused on the Shoalies, I guess. Those other species are in there, for sure. When I go out on a Monday, I can see where people were catfishing over the weekend. You ever target other species there ? Ever for example, taken larger hooks and thicker line and tossed a Chunk of another Fish out with a sinker ? Maybe near a deep pool?
Thanks, man. Very much enjoying your pics, too. Keep 'em coming, please!Beautiful stuff, Hugh. Glad it was only your pride that got damaged in the wipeout. ; )
Those shoals are unlike anything we have around here. They must be tough to fish since they look so sharp.
Same with the bass, unlike anything around here.
Thanks for sharing.

Yeah I'd just use Steel and a small chunk of cut bait to make sure they don't bite through. Really interesting fish broI was thinking gar with the flouro leaders, but maybe more like 50# or the wire ones.
And you reckon our patch is hostile ?.Ok, this is a bit too ridiculous a coincidence.
I went for a walk to the post office and saw a woman and a toddler, and on the next block, two RCMP cruisers side by side, cops talking to each other. I made a joke to the lady about being under surveillance and she says "you know why they're here, right?"
"no"
"the cougar"
WTF?
Apparently it's all over the village facebook group(i'm not on FB) that there have been a couple cougar sightings in town.
I went over and talked with the cops and they confirmed that there had been reports, but it sounded like they were second-hand, and nobody had a photo. Okay. I said I was going to take the trail down in the valley home from my walk and they just said to keep my eyes open.
I did.
Luckily the grouse I flushed was 30 feet away instead of right under my feet like so often happens.
Only minor palpitations, no full on cardiac episode.
I definitely had a bit more adrenaline than normal, but no need. I survived the vicious 16 oz beast and made it home in one piece to tell the harrowing tale.
Terrific pics . Appreciate the insight into your beautiful native terrain . It’s the old story of probably taking things for granted sometimes . That area looks absolutely tranquil . Are you allowed to camp along the shore or is it too dangerous ?Back on the river yesterday! Twice a week seems to be about what I got in the tank these days, so I'm treating these days like gold. I'd have had to have been checking my shorts!! The local facebook biddies think there are cougars here in GA, too. Sorry, "Florida Panthers."Ok, this is a bit too ridiculous a coincidence.
