So that dude said the first Jau was pulling drag set to 30 pounds, which, I mean that's impressive to say the least, and the orange and black Rod he has there is a Whisker Seeker Catfish Rod which is a composite blank (80% S-Glass and 20% Graphite) and he appears to have the FMJ version (Full Metal Jacket, which means aluminum Reel Seat) and the Reel is a nice one! Penn Fathom II. I personally like the Lever Drag version, but well enough to generate over 30 pounds of Drag that the Catfish was pulling. Jau are CRAZY strong fish so I'm not surprised at the ability to yank on 30 pounds like that.

Man I'd LOVE to hook into a Jau, but going into the Jungle.....That heat and humidity LOL.... Ah well.

THATS A HOG OF A PERCH

Nice work
Thanks. :)

I marked a spot to try from a bathymetric map on my PC, walked out, drilled one hole, dropped down and nailed that pig in the first 2 minutes. I was feeling pretty full of myself.

Set up the tent, dropped the cam, and watched perchTV all afternoon. Caught a bunch of 5-8 inchers and saw a few bigger ones but nothing else like that one. It was just a hair over 12-1/4".

I think I may go back. ;)

PERCH CHOPS! heck yeah
That's the whole fish. I learned to peel them instead of filleting them and it is a game changer for average perch. This one was almost too big though, I should have cut it up a bit more.

----------------------------
I went to a burbot lake yesterday. It is still pre-spawn but I wanted to do a scout. Saw a fair number, but only caught one.

I was being lazy. It was my 4th lake in three days and I wasn't exactly working hard.
There was only one other guy there and he'd never caught a burb before. He was too deep and using the wrong set-up so after a brief chat I decided to be a bit of a mentor. I got him set up in the right depth with the right presentation and he iced one within 10 minutes. He was so happy.

We shot the shit for quite a while and later I did a demo of how to peel the one he kept, just like another fisherman did for me many years ago. I've done it enough that I am a lot more efficient than most YT videos(which he'd watched) and he was very grateful.

By the end, he was hooked on burbot fishing and I'd sold an underwater camera for the local fishin' store, as he'd been wavering on the idea before our chat.

It was another enjoyable day. ;)
I'm definitely taking the day off today to rest, recharge and dry out and likely back at it tomorrow.

No good deed goes unpunished! Maybe that'll teach you to help a rube out! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: (JK, hopefully obviously)

If a dude (or dudette) presents themselves as a reasonable person, I'll try and help them, too. Not too much, but definitely some.
I took a guy under my wing a little this year, showed him a couple of good current breaks and schooled him a bit on baits and presentation.
I ran into him a few weeks later, and he was so happy that he'd caught several fish where and how I'd shown him - can't lie, it felt good.
We got to talking about weed, but it was only talk - no doobage was produced.

Absolutely. This guy was a fisherman and a tradesman and a decent guy. He had a well behaved dog, he cleaned up his trash, and I was more than happy to pass on some info.

By contrast, this weaselly little fucker showed up as the first guy was leaving, actually moved into his holes. He tried talking to me and I just shut right down. I wouldn't have told him if the sky was blue. You know how some people just set your nerves on edge? This guy set my alarm bells off. I locked my auger in my car before going back in my tent.
Do you ever keep any of the rest of the fish ?
Perch eyeballs and strips of belly skin of various species are the most popular pieces used around here. I use them occasionally, but it isn't a primary bait.

Yeah here it's about the same; My Uncles knew as do others in this state that f you caught one Perch, you have what you need to catch another LOL. Belly is nice because it's easier to keep on the hook, but I've used even actual Filets of it as cut bait myself. My Grandpa used to cut the stuff we were going to eat off, and then use the rest for the garden, but I generally keep those parts too, as a lot of fish are totally willing to hit cut bait. Caught a NICE Freshwater Drum (Locally we say Sheepshead but not the Saltwater one) using I think Lake Trout meat. Guts are good though too; We have Bullheads here that pass up very few meals LOL.
