I would avoid kits altogether. Stick with the PF tek if you want a cheap, quick confidence boost.
If you want to take this hobby anywhere beyond the toe-dipping stage, try to scrape together enough cash for a pressure cooker, a tote to function as a still air box, and some misc agar supplies. It's really not as hard or complicated as it sounds, there's just a lot of info to absorb so chip away at it one day at a time.
