I'm still enjoying watching younger folks discover great old movies and music, especially unique stuff, and I just noticed that the classic Blazing Saddles turns 50 years old in 2024.

An amazing cast, a hilarious and brave script, and a closing 10 minutes that is still one of the great twists in cinema.

I stole Mongo's line "Mongo likes candy" and substituted whatever word for "candy" in my teens, to the point it was my nickname for a while, after seeing the movie at a drive-in. :ROFLMAO:

Any other fans?

I also learned a bunch of stuff that I never knew back in the day, like how so much of the movie was a giant fuck-you to Hollywood bullshit, like racism, and the abuses in the studio system.

For example, Mel Brooks playing the Indian chief while talking Yiddish was calling out Hollywood's practice of casting Jewish(or Italian*) people in Native roles, since "they're both dark, who cares?"

I also love that the"You know, morons" line was improvised and Bart (Cleavon LIttle)'s reaction was genuine.

Life of Brian ( how could you forget )
I was actually going to mention The Holy Grail, since it will be 50 next year. :)

Yeah, it was a different era, before summer blockbusters were scheduled years in advance, and before special effects became more important than plot.
I haven't been to a movie theater in decades and no plans to change that.

Yep was going to mention CGI changing the landscape forever . Jurassic Park was the first I recall that really captured out imagination on what was now possible but it went the way you described . All bling and no plot . Honestly I’d rather watch one of the first Superman movies with Reeve and Hackman that the bullshit marvel movies of today . The odd one gets its right but I’ve lost interest because sitting through a dozen to find one , who could be bothered .
The Star Wars prequels were disappointing for me as well . They lacked the genuine good vs evil feel of the originals to me anyway .
The Holy Grail an absolute gem . You’ll struggle to find such a team of comics that bond together so well again id imagine . Have a look at them . They just look like a bunch of funny bastards . Imagine sitting down for a few beers with these lads IMG_7534.jpeg

That eulogy was perfect.

You could see both the pain, and the need for the relief of laughter, in Cleese and the other Pythons; and the desire to deal with their grief, while giving Graham a proper sendoff
