I built (a very simple) OS back in school (oh some 20 years ago) using C and iirc, with a FAT16 file system for simplicity. As for assembly, I’ve only played around with MIPS because that’s what they used to teach comp architecture in school lol. But it was good for understanding how a CPU works and some basic cpu concepts (cache fetching, pipeline architecture, etc)
Damn bro, there's not a lot of people I know personally who've built an OS. That's some black belt shit right there haha! That's awesome bro! MIPS Assembler would be awesome, as the SGI Indy Workstation used that! SGI is like one of the only Unix companies where I'd sit and stare at the machines they made like it was a Van Gogh painting; They were just SO pretty LOL!
Most of the Unix I was into was either Linux or BSD based, as it was easily available without a down payment on a Mansion in terms of price. I did have Solaris, but it was a freebie. I personally was always more into BSD in terms of Unix "Flavors" and to this day I love UC Berkeley and would love to see the campus some day.
I actually used to have a DVD "20 years of Berkeley Unix" before my ex decided to leave for her ex BF, and took most of the Software and CDs, and a good chunk of my movies but I still have a few things left from that; Some FreeBSD boxer shorts, a tee shirt, and an old FreeBSD disc set, but my books I had to toss.... Her ex / new BF has MRSA, and when it was time to clean out the apartment we had, clearly I couldn't keep my books or anything as there was no way to clean them, so a lot of those sadly had to go. I had a LOT of books (Everything from Programming to Operating Systems, Computer and Network Security and my copy of a Quarter Century of Unix) but I do have a lot of this stuff downloaded ad it's probably still on my FTP Server.
