How many other Computer Nerds are here?

I built (a very simple) OS back in school (oh some 20 years ago) using C and iirc, with a FAT16 file system for simplicity. As for assembly, I’ve only played around with MIPS because that’s what they used to teach comp architecture in school lol. But it was good for understanding how a CPU works and some basic cpu concepts (cache fetching, pipeline architecture, etc)

Damn bro, there's not a lot of people I know personally who've built an OS. That's some black belt shit right there haha! That's awesome bro! MIPS Assembler would be awesome, as the SGI Indy Workstation used that! SGI is like one of the only Unix companies where I'd sit and stare at the machines they made like it was a Van Gogh painting; They were just SO pretty LOL!

Most of the Unix I was into was either Linux or BSD based, as it was easily available without a down payment on a Mansion in terms of price. I did have Solaris, but it was a freebie. I personally was always more into BSD in terms of Unix "Flavors" and to this day I love UC Berkeley and would love to see the campus some day.

I actually used to have a DVD "20 years of Berkeley Unix" before my ex decided to leave for her ex BF, and took most of the Software and CDs, and a good chunk of my movies but I still have a few things left from that; Some FreeBSD boxer shorts, a tee shirt, and an old FreeBSD disc set, but my books I had to toss.... Her ex / new BF has MRSA, and when it was time to clean out the apartment we had, clearly I couldn't keep my books or anything as there was no way to clean them, so a lot of those sadly had to go. I had a LOT of books (Everything from Programming to Operating Systems, Computer and Network Security and my copy of a Quarter Century of Unix) but I do have a lot of this stuff downloaded ad it's probably still on my FTP Server.

@Psychobilly I'll move the conversation over here away from the Listening thread.

I haven't seen COBOL mentioned in years! There was an old Hacker joke saying it was "Crappy Old Business Oriented Language" lol. I think Fortran has a similar following.

Neither have I, although this article did pop up at the beginning of the pandemic.

I've messed with C, C+, started to get into ruby for a minute and flash when ytmnd was cool.
I never really messed with coding too much or enough to be a proficient coder. I preferred the hardware side, having operated a side business from 2001-2009 doing general Geek Squad stuff for local home and small business as well as a basic Internet/computer familiarization classes for elderly folks at a couple Assisted Living places.

Has anyone brought up the glory days of bbs/commodore 64-128?
DAE miss ASCII pr0n? zip bombs?
Is anyone disappointed John McAfee didn't eat his dick?

You guys are much more sophisticated than I. I know how to edit GRUB, that counts for something, right?

I did similar with a little store that was local. And yeah sitting GRUB is a skill lol. I'm not really a coder either though I did like messing with Ruby and Perl, and I had a Perl Port scanner at one point lol.

I'm not a master of Sendmail or something, but I have managed to log into a computer running Linux and st the default run level to 6 in Inittab, lol. Makes an infinite loop and doesn't stop rebooting.

All my nerd friends are probably way better coders than I am though lol.

I'm not at my mom's right now but I've got some pictures there of love old Amigas and shit lol. I'll have to upload some in that nerd thread on here.

We switched out insurance at work so we had to do some stuff on the computer with the agent and I had to come up with a password…I typed it in like 3 times and it wouldn’t work and he goes you need to have a capital letter in it and I said I understand that I just don’t know how to make a capital letter so the insurance agent did my password for me…let’s just say I’m no computer nerd..we have a laptop and a desk top and I honestly don’t even know how to turn either of them on lol

That's ok bro; at least you didn't use the CD or DVD drive as a Coffee cup holder lol.

When it comes to custom software development mlsdev.com/blog/web-development-companies, the best approach depends on the type of software development project you're working on. First, identify the collaborators that you need to work with. In this case, they are the program sponsor, high-level stakeholders, customers, and other partners. Secondly, the software's flexibility is critical. During this phase, it's important to define the scope of your project. You'll want to develop a solution that will fit your needs.

OK, I'm at my Mom's house now, and have access to my pictures LOL. So, none of these are my images, they were simply ones I found because I was intrigued by different OSs back in the day,so I'd download pics of them:

Even though this was for Computer Nerds, there is a general nerd thing I'm gonna post and see if anyone knows about it:

Make your own super awesome dashboards with a raspberry pi!

I use mariadb as my database:

I wrote a python script that takes sensor json and transforms them to an sql insert query, which is displayed by grafana.

I know I've said this before but I feel a need to reiterate it:
