Our two largest at the warm water discharge in Lansing fishing in the winter was a flathead that was just over 30 lbs and the largest channel cat we've caught was 26 lbs.
Very respectable fish. They are probably still swimming. We used to fish the Hot Ponds on Saginaw bay which is a man made river discharge for a coal generated power plant

Man I bet that Flathead was a heck of a fight! I've seen a dude noodle a 26 pound Flathead and get attacked in the water by it LOL.

at the mouth of the Saginaw river. Huge carp and cats can be caught there, but I would not want to eat anything that comes from the Saginaw river as DOW chemical

Yeah it's sad we can't eat some of the catches based on where you catch them We get decent sized Suckers around this side in early Spring, and have them smoked.

I caught a carp there once that weighed 41 lbs. It was actually a sub species of carp called a buffalo carp. 6 lb test and 45 minutes before I saw it. It dragged us and our boat about a 1/4 mile dowstream to Saginaw bay before we netted it, weighed it, and released it. My personal largest weight fish I've caught in Michigan.

Bro that's amazing! I'd LOVE to hook into a Buffalo that size! I can't believe you managed to bring that it on 6 pound line.... LOL, you know those Zebco Dock Demons ? They come with 6 pound test on the little tiny reel they come with? I literally had to strip the line off mine, and put 10 pound test on it (the smallest line I've got) because I kept snapping the line trying to cinch a knot. LOL.

Welcome! Love the Corgi

Only a few of these are recent, but I used some
older ones to preface the NPD, *new puppy day,
we'll be having in about 10 weeks or so.


We lost two of our three Corgis in this last year.
They lived long and happy lives, however that leaves
River who seems to be in mourning not having someone to
play with and go for walks with.

We've been trying to give her a lot of play time and walks,
but as humans, it's not the same for a Corgi, especially one
that's had a couple brothers her entire life.

Here is a pic of River and her 2 BFs who have left her
for the green pastures beyond.

Here she is with Satch, who we lost earlier this year, playing
pounce. She would purposely egg Satch on so that he would pounce
her. She loved it.

Enter a wonderful litter from a breeder who lives in our state
about a two hour drive away.

There are 3 males and 5 females. My wife likes one of the blonde
ones that's a boy. This color is rare in Cardigan Corgis. Our name is
on the list for one, and we get second pick of the litter.

I would have been happy with a rescue, but my
wife likes the idea of another Corgi for River. Happy wife, happy life.

Here they are about a week old.
We should have a NPD in about 10 weeks.

Thanks kind Sir. We launch at Elizabeth park in Trenton and usually fish downstream from the launch which has us fishing the west side of Grosse Isle all the way down to Lake Erie. We have on occasion gone up stream to the area your referring to and fish the Trenton channel just down stream from where the River Rouge flows into the Trenton Channel. The first time we explored upstream from Elizabeth park launch, we found the spot easy as there were quite a few boats fishing the channel there. Humbug Island area and the River Rouge area also have great numbers of walleyes.

I don't know what the numbers are nowadays for Lake Erie but around 20 years ago, it was estimated that there were around 65 million legal sized walleyes in Lake Erie.
Most of the big ones will spend a good share of the year at the east end of Lake Erie where the lake is deeper. As winter is ending, these walleyes make a westerly migration
along the southern shore of the lake. As they head west for the spring spawn, a huge number of them will run the Maumee river in Ohio. The rest turn north at the Maumee river and continue their migration toward the Detroit river. There arrival every spring is like clockwork. They would show up in the lower Detroit river between the 7th to the 10th of April. I started fishing the spot in the early 80s, and there were only a handful of guys fishing there. By the late 90s, word got out and the boats numbered in the hundreds. It's still a great spot for easy limits of 'eyes and perch. Since the popularity of the spot grew, walleye tournaments are held there, and the lower river gets quite a bit angling pressure.

A gent I know that use to write for and produce the Michigan Hunting and Fishing magazine had a picture in his office of me
with an ear to ear grin hanging on to a couple of walleyes that weighed a combined total of 25 lbs. Babe Winkleman was visiting his office and saw the pic and wanted to
know where they were caught. Long story short, I ended up guiding Babe, my writer friend and his camerman onto some of my spots for the pigs in the lower river.
Babe is from Minnesota where walleyes barely reach the 5 lb mark. That first trip for Babe that day was 2 fish for him that were both over 10 lbs as well as limits for all onboard. He had a mount done of the largest. Nice guy and we both shared like interests. Wink, wink. lol


My personal best for walleye was caught there. 35" and weighed 14 1/4 lbs. Released. There is no slot limit or size limit other than being of legal size, but anyone that
has caught these and ate them knows that the smaller 2 - 5 lb fish taste best. So we usually release the larger ones to do their spring spawn thing. Icing on the cake for us
was finding cuts on Grosse Isle that had a bunch of perch, where limit catches are the rule. These perch found in the cuts of channels into the interior of Grosse Isle get a huge run of perch that come from Lake Erie to spawn. Some nice sized ones too. Up to 16".

I've had the big Lund all the way up to Lake St Clair from our launch site at Elizibeth park in Trenton. I know the river well. One time when leaving heading back to Lansing, we got turned around and ended up driving in the lower east side of Detroit. I was somewhat fearful as the looks we were getting told us we should leave asap. Not a good neighborhood. I'm going to have to try some of your gear m8, as I've heard and read good things.
