Figured it was time for a new thread, even if it isn't quite time for fishing.

I went down to the river for a look this afternoon. It may be a day or two yet. ;)

So,, I wanna stay compliant.

Following 2023 regs, I would observe the same dates?

Lakes in PP1 are open year round.
Water is open now, but an hour+ drive.

River opened on May 7th, 2023.
I assume I shouldn't be fish'n in there, before May 7th, unless they publish differently.

Is that how you would read it, @Amarok ?

Yup. (pathetic how they haven't been ready with new regs 2 years in a row)

Here's the individual lake regs for PP1.
Most are closed right now, Mar 15- May 8

Same for most streams, the exceptions being listed here: (EG Bow is open year round)

With a new fishing license and the gear in the back, I went for a drive and did a bit of walking yesterday. Still a ways to go yet before I'll be fishing, but I'm ready.

I like the difference in light and mood in these two photos, one facing upstream and one downstream.

I've been to the river a couple times. Might have had a nibble, but that was it. Haven't even seen a jumper. Thinking I'll slip down first thing tomorrow and see if I can catch an early riser or two.
Still a ways off from sturgeon prime time, but I'm already looking forward to that. Nice to know I'm all geared up with the big baitcasters spooled up and ready for the dinos.

In the meantime, young Zach just posted a video that was taken at a spot I've been fishing since before he was born. A provincial record walleye came out of this hole back in the day(not by me). I've had some good trips there over the decades, though I haven't been for a few years. Maybe I'll drive over next week if my spots don't pick up. :)

Got my papers today.
Started the season
Cool! That looks like a pretty good sized snake. I love hearing only curiosity in your little buddy's voice. No fear, no aggression. :)

I took a pipe instead of papers, ;) but finally got my season going today, too.

Still dealing with car issues so I hopped on the bike this afternoon and headed to the river. About 4-1/2 miles though loose gravel and sand, into the wind, to get there. Decided to take the pavement back, slightly longer, uphill, and in a lucky twist, into the wind again:rolleyes:. I am so fucking beat. I haven't done any real riding since 2020 and am very out of shape. I am going to be sore tomorrow, I'm thinking.

I was very rusty. Missed a few I should have had, and donated some bait, but still managed to beach 2 good walleye.
Had a beaver swim up and start to climb out right in front of me. He looked a little surprised when I said "Hi beaver" before he turned and swam away.

It was nice to get the season going properly after a few earlier skunks and explorations. Gonna be back on the road soon, or gonna have legs of iron again. Either way, it's fishin' time!

I am glad you made it down the the water. Loose gravel is a real bear; mentally exhausting, I find. Gotta navigate constantly or end up waxing in the soft berms.

Anywho,
I am really excited to talk fishing, as I have not had a license since 2019.

Did you have everything in a backpack, for your bike trip? We were on bikes for our trip, as well. One of my daughters backpacks has a clasp above the water bottle pocket. Rods fit well and secure on the side there. I am a grown man, and my multi-colored backpack is purple, pink, and IDGAF. 😃

My son has no qualms whatsoever crashing a picnic, so I get a chance to talk to a lot of Anglers down at the river. Saw some Sturgeon photos, nothing over two foot. Nice to know they are still there, in numbers.
Pike, gold-mooneye, Perch, and Walleye is all I will ever see down here, and probably in that order.
I would be happy to catch any of them. Truth is, as much as I enjoy spending time fishing, I don't usually catch fish.

Yup. It was kind of thrown together yesterday, but if I am doing this regularly I'll tweak the setup. I have a little board I can strap to the pack for hanging rods from and add a chair and a few other comforts.

It's nice to have an "in" like that, but I tend to chat people up if we're on the river as well. I don't get too nosy and play it by ear. I've met some good folks and had some good chats. People are often far more willing to share info in those situations, too.

A couple thoughts:
Patience is not always a virtue. Leaving your line in one spot all day is counter productive if you aren't getting action.

One of the best ways to find the fish and learn the hole is to cast out a bait rig and bring it in a foot or two every few minutes. If you pay attention, you will get an idea of depths, obstructions, snags, and fish holding areas. Once you find the fish, try to cast straight to (or just past) them. A slip bobber rig is also a great exploration tool. Some days they want a still rig, some days the bobber rig is the ticket. Be adaptable.

Don't get too attached to a spot. An insect hatch, wind, current change or a multitude of factors can alter the situation quickly. If the hole that produced all morning dies off, start the exploration casts again until you find them.

That's enough babble before breakfast. Once I get started, I can carry on and on. :)

Hopefully it's just waiting for parts not the "um...we got into it and found..."

However, I'm just being chill and not getting worked up. Everything will work out eventually and I already know I can roll with whatever punches come my way.

The neighbor offered his car last weekend so I ran into the city and stocked up on everything I was low on. I could probably go 2 months without leaving my property, so I have a pretty big comfort zone at the moment. I've also started putting out feelers for a replacement if repairs aren't financial sense, and am getting some positive responses.
(thanks for asking, btw)

Well, hopefully it isn't something really serious. Having a cushion to land on is great, but no one likes dealing with a massive amount of car issues all at once. We had to have all 4 tires replaced, on a vehicle that was bought with brand new tires, after about a year... Not sure why anyone would ever produce a tire like that, but, then again, Cookies Fam is making money so I guess there's always a way right?

The place here is decent at least; We went in because we got a flat (picked up a loose screw....Gee, me with a screw loose? Who knew??) and they patched it for free even though we didn't buy them there. Then a few months later it happened again, and then, another tire went, and they said it was coming apart... So 4 new tires later... This was right after having to have the oil pan replaced, which still has a leak "somewhere". It's not as bad now so we've decided to let it go for a bit. Shit adds up quick though.

Pedaled my ass to the river today and spent a good chunk of the afternoon down there.

Action was tough. If I could hit the right spots I would get hits, but hookups were hard to come by. I beached one solid walleye, maybe 3 pounds, and one strong river pike that would have gone around five.

Still no sign of dinos rolling but they'll be there soon. I can't wait. I'm currently using one of the big baitcasters for the bottom rig, but went with a lighter rod. I figure that's a good middle ground. The big reel gives me a chance to bring in the beasts and the rod lets me enjoy fighting the wallies and pike. I'll up-size around month-end.

Already seeing progress fitness wise. I knocked a bit of time off the trek back out of the river valley and wasn't nearly as drained when I got home. My cardio is surprisingly good. My breathing was controlled and my heart rate never got up where I was aware of it, it's just my ol' legs that need toning. :)

Had a good afternoon. :)
Hooked, fought and lost a goldeye, on the first cast. After that I was getting hits but it took a while to zero in on the spot. I was switching between the slip bobber and the bottom rig and getting hits on both. Eventually hooked into a chunky walleye that I was certain was a pike by how it fought. Turned out it was hooked in the cheek.

A bit later the bottom rod was twitching. I assumed it was a goldeye playing around so I was shocked when I went to set the hook and the rod doubled right over. There's no mistaking the feel of a dinosaur. I got it close enough for an obscured look before she decided to get serious about fighting. I just tucked the butt of the rod under my arm, leaned back, and held on. They don't do 100mph drag screaming runs, they just go hard and steady and there's bugger all you can do until they tire.

She was unhooked and released in under a minute once I got her to the bank. No measurements, no extra pics. I'm happy to pose if someone else is there to take a pic, but if it's just me the priority is a fast, safe release.

It wasn't a monster. I estimated the length at between 36 and 40 inches. Its strength was incredible though. Can't wait to try my luck against some of the big ones, though I'm thinking it's time to bust out the big rods too.

Managed a couple more nice walleyes and got bitten off by a presumed pike. After a while the water dropped a few inches, the fish moved, and I couldn't find them again. That's okay, there's always next time.

Noticed you posted in the other fishin' thread, @Ramjet159 . Figured I'd tag you in case you hadn't seen this one.

Also, @Mim Towls. Miss you around here, brother. Hope you are well.
Thanks for the tag mate . Never too many fishing threads 👍🏼
It’s been a challenging last couple months to say the least but I’m winning slowly .
I thought only the dog missed me and even then only occasionally 🤣.
The wife was out fishing again last night when the full moon was straight overhead .
Caught 5 decent King George from the shore .
I’ve accepted my new position of “ Processing Bitch “ so I’ll clean them shortly and then make her up some more hooks .
I need to go back to work ! IMG_8960.jpeg
