Best budget leds

The cob light build I did, I couldnt get anywhere near that good of a price per watt. The cost of COB led's and other build components has went down since my last build years ago, but the heat sinks are still costly when not purchased in bulk like these companys can do. Plus cobs and smd led's use different heatsinks for cooling -cobs being more expensive to cool. I will say that the longevity of my cob build (though considerably more expensive), the longevity is there. Im going on 10 years trouble free with my 400W lights and they still shows no signs of stopping. Im currently 5 years outside of the manufacturers warranties lol. I have already got my moneys worth X2 so its paid for itself now. Any other premade light I could have purchased would need to be replaced 2-3 times in that same decade.
Problem with todays board leds is that a company will build them to run max wattage and lowest efficiency which is great when you need a lot of watts and lumens at a good initial entry price. Then the light burns out after 2-3 years from being driven so hard and so hot vs a light that runs at half the wattage but can do it for much longer. My cobs are rated for like 100W, but I run them at 50W and use 2x as many cobs per driver. Same lumens, same wattage, just more efficient and runs much cooler. Doesnt work the cobs or the driver so hard. When the driver or cobs finally take a shit on me it will be very inexpensive to rebuild like brand new for another 10 years since I already own the heatsinks (the most expensive part). The initial cost sucked, but Im glad I played the long game lol
Is there a point where the output starts to diminish?
Not that it won't function, but that the cobs themselves wear down to the point of only putting out a portion of the usable light they were putting out when new.
Just curious. I think I'm getting near that point on some of mine.
Depending on hrs of usage and how hard their driven, 5-7 years?! 10? 12?
I'm guessing.

I have some old 3590 fixtures from Tasty. He built those like tanks. Literally super heavy. But eventually I wonder about the output diminishing.

I should suck it up and buy a light meter.

Sorry I probably sound like a naysayer. But I have no bad intention. Just looking to consider all the different variables.

Anyone at any time feel free to tell me to frig off haha

Cobs dont diminish like bulbs do. I think I remember Bobby from CobKits over on RIU said the diminish rate over 50,000 hrs was less than 1% so virtually no loss. CXB 3590's are awesome. Im still rocking the CXB3070's which is a whole generation before the CXB3590's. The citi 1212's are another great affordable choice for cobs. I think the 1212's are like $8 a piece now vs the $24 I paid per cob back in the day. I used that 1212 build for years as well then gave it to a member on here a few years ago. Im willing to bet its still going too.

I have some 3070 fixtures too. But the build quality from the go green i have is meh. Had a 200w die on me. I've been meaning to take it apart and try to fix it.

Would you say cobs are a step up quality wise from diodes? If so why?

Do diodes diminish output over time?

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for so many questions.

The 3070's rock and will go for years properly driven on a Meanwell driver. I dont have much knowledge on the smd type so I cant say about diminishing. I personally feel that cobs are more of a "commercial" grade of light in comparison to smd's. When cobs first hit the scene in cannabis, they were only available as commercial lighting for storefronts/malls etc. There were a few guys that made the leap and ordered those crazy minimum orders over seas just so guys like me could buy 8 or 10 at a time lol.

Trying to explain what a bin is to someone that doesn't deal with these regularly is tough. The par output, lumens and, other things are hard to explain until u FRY ur plants. Haha. Too much is too much. Those cobs can be a bit direct in there coverage. The strips are known for hermie lowers. It's a give and take. Lots of research

Cobs and smd's are totally different in diminishing efficacy. Cobs are up to 5 percent after 5yrs of 12/12 and surface mounted up to 20 percent after 5yrs. This of course is dependant upon bin lot, and manufacturer.
