What did you do today?

Started defoliating my backyard the last couple days. Was working on the ground with heavy snips and bow saw and chainsaw and rake. Moved up a ladder with the chainsaw today and also brought home a boom truck with a man basket(benefit of my job), so tomorrow I'm either going to remove a couple big trees or electrocute myself. ;)

It actually should go pretty smooth and easy once I get comfortable with the boom controls. The electric chainsaw is so nice to work with, too. The hardest part is talking my almost 90yo neighbor out of helping me. He's tough as hell, but I don't want him carrying big branches and trunk sections and he must have offered 6 or 8 times this evening to help haul all the debris to the dump. (Remember Bob, Daniel? I seem to recall you coveting him as a neighbor. He hasn't slowed down one bit, and is still awesome.)

I was trying to hire a tree removal outfit but got tired of the search. Actually pretty happy about that. It only occurred to ask the boss this week about the boom truck and just before quitting time today, one of the boys drove it to my place. Should save me a decent bit of money (again, presuming I don't fry or otherwise wreck myself.)

I do, and assumed it was him, lol.

I tried.

I guess we should have looked at the boom truck configuration a little closer. It's a line truck, meant to drive under the work. It has almost no reach radius. It's just an upper and lower boom and a rotating turntable, with no extensions. I could have positioned it, laid out the rigger pads, extended the riggers, harnessed up, jumped in the basket, maneuvered into place, cut a couple branches, lowered down, tore down, re-postioned, and cut a couple more branches but it didn't seem like a good use of time.

I was able to reach one important bit of work. There was a long out of service telephone land line coming off the power pole, across my lawn to the house. It was regularly in the way, and is an impediment to reaching the trees I need removed. I was able to snip it off and clear up a bunch of air space. (I verified the other end was not energized. It was just an old cord, attached to nothing, hanging on my antenna tower.) It would have been very tough to reach otherwise, so still happy with the morning's efforts.

Plus I got to play up in the air for a while, and get a tiny bit more practice with air brakes and Eaton Fuller transmissions.
