Who loves fishing ?

Huge winds forecast for this afternoon but the morning should be calm. It's currently dark and 1C.

Thinking I need to watch a few fishing vids to get me motivated as right now tea at the PC is feeling more appealing than a cold dark riverbank, but I know I'll regret not going while the wind howls this afternoon.

It's been below freezing most nights for a while.
Tonight's low is forecast to be -9C and the two week outlook has a lot more - than +. It's definitely colder than normal.
Barring one last warm stretch, I'm predicting my first tentative steps on the ice to happen by November 21.

Ice fishing is such a different game, but still so much fun. It's as much about the sleds and augers and tents and heaters and electronics and the planning as about dropping a line in the water.
Can't wait.

Just went for a stroll. Between the latest forecast and what I'm seeing, mid-November might be possible for water walking.

Sun's been on this beaver pond for most of the afternoon but you can still see ice.

A lovely place to kick off your shoes and dip your toes. ;)

Does having a short warm season make you look forward to it after a long winter, or do you like the winters better?, or both? both look beautiful and peaceful in your neck of the woods. I would luv that climate, but I like the cold, the summers here in MD are miserable.

I love the huge transitions that reset everything a few times a year. It makes me appreciate everything as it goes away and come back. You can't miss something that never leaves, ya know?

I love ice fishing and have since I could walk. It's a completely different activity in the winter, but incredibly rewarding and each phase of winter has its own attraction.

Early ice often has great fishing and is a bit of an adrenaline thing, out on only a few inches of crystal clear ice. I take pride in often being the first idiot out there.

As it thickens, I can reach more places and bring more gear safely, eventually driving on if snow isn't too deep. That opens up things like camping on the ice, which is such a fun thing to do.

Late season brings the burbot spawn, which is the most fun of the entire winter. Combine that with camping, sitting around a fire and fishing into a hole beside you, listening to tunes and eating and drinking, it's amazing.

I've slept in an unheated tent(heater off to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning) in -25C. I've had moose and deer come up within a few yards of me, and muskrats and beavers come into my fishing holes. I've listened to two groups of coyotes talking back and forth with me in between them. It's a way of experiencing nature that very few people are willing or able to do. It's very primal and very satisfying, especially since I'm usually alone.

That said, it winter was a month shorter, I might not complain. Problem with that though, is that it would bring more people and if the choice is cold winters or more obnoxious, noisy, inconsiderate bald monkeys around, I'm good with the cold. :)

I don't know all your abbreviations. What's that? Morth Dakota? 😜

Sorry Maryland, mid Atlantic. Hot and humid

I've never ice fished, but seems cool and quite the undertaking.
DopeDaniel fished the river with me in the summer(we left early one day because it was too hot, fyi - it does get hot here) and I've taken out a few people on their first ice trips, but I've never got to take a warm climate person out. That would be a blast. I was talking to @Ramjet159 and telling him I pictured him looking like a huge Aussie version of Bambi. :ROFLMAO:

I'm strictly a saltwater fisherman now, but used to flyfish trout, large and small mouth, pickerel etc, just prefer saltwater fishing, but any fishing is great in my eyes. Used to do a offshore fish twice a year, but haven't been since my Dad died, it was our thing, my Dad also lived on the eastern Chesapeake bay, so grew up fishing the Bay, that's what I miss most.

The sky is full of ducks and geese and cranes(can't hunt cranes here, but can next door in Saskatchewan) for a good chunk of the Fall. I know lots of guys who live for this time of year.

Personally, I love shooting, but meat is cheap, guns are noisy, and I prefer peace and quiet and my critters alive. :)

I can certainly understand that, we all find solace in nature in different ways. To me, the taking of another creatures life is never a small thing, It's more about seeing nature in all her glory, getting a chance to interact with different animals, meeting and spending time with friends (new and old) and working to set up the hunt, while sharing a thermos of coffee and blind snacks (anything from little debbie's, to canned sardines etc), and watching dogs that we worked and trained together do what they love more than anything (being outdoors with us, and retrieving some ducks or geese)

Of course, at the end of the day, if lucky, I might have a bird or two, and be able to turn them into some of the finest eating around.

Those couple ducks will provide three or four solid meals, I prefer to pluck birds whole, Hearts and Livers get tossed in some brown butter along with garlic as an appetizer with some toast. I remove the Breast meat, and sear in a hot skillet fat side down, served over mash, with some plum / peach / or apricot chutney, or an orange marmelade gravy. Then the legs, ribcage and back, and gizzards go into a roux to make a Duck Gumbo.

All while getting about as much of a workout in one day as my old body can handle.

This little girl also complains if we miss to many hunting days. :)

She's a tad bit older now.. (pushing 11 years, most labs rarely hunt past 8 or 9 years, but she is still getting it with me.. this is her at around 2 years old (posing with my daughter on a very warm october hunt in louisiana)

In all fairness... quite a few days proceed something like this.. :)
