In Bloom
Howdy Hunters!

Been a while since I landed here back in August. Figured I'd move outta the intro thread and post some progress. Although, technically I have 4 plants in flower, only 2 really count, as they have basically taken over the tent, prison rules style - you'll take this tent back with harvest shears, bitch... These two ladies are beasts, and I'm fuckin' lovin' it.

Currently at day 28 flower
First up, Sanfune 2022 from @santero - @Agreenpassion wanted a look at these, nothing stunning to look at yet, but the smells she's started to throw. Sweet, thick candy berry smells. Nothing you can really pick out, but kinda like you opened a bag of Jolly Rancher candy and took a whiff of the montage of sweet flavors. I imagined the cheese funk will start to creep into the mix as she progresses to maturity. Really looking forward to her.

Next up, HMAC F2 from @Chefdave - my veg setup was cfls in a bathroom closet, this thing exploded when it hit the big light, first pics are root pr0n at xplant and a shot of her in the tub all alone on 10/13, lights flipped 10/15 and holy shit. Included a shot of a few calyxes popping out of a fan leaf, which is happening all over this thing, and when it's not calyxes, it's an extra leaf blade. I'm assuming this has something to do with the alien bits. Either way, I'm gonna area 51 this MF'r bowl by bowl when the time is right. Smells faintly sweet with a hint of vanilla, but nothing really prominent, and the vanilla might be imaginary with how faint it is.

Just a small update, the aromas seem to be changing daily. Yesterday the Sanfune was super sweet fruity, no funk, just hard-candy type smells. Today she has bold citrusy-twang overtones up front, with the sweet swept to the background. The twang is an odd tartish grapefruit/mango-ish mix. Really stoked I got some F2's coming, just for the terp profile alone.
The HMAC has picked up a piney funk overnight that just throws the sweet in the backseat and takes it along for the ride. I should have some HMACxSanfune coming too, assuming I harvested the pollen and applied it correctly. Definitely have some browning pistils and fattening calyxes, hopefully they'll be viable.

35 Day Update

Sanfune - Aromas aren't so much changing every day as they are adding different tones as diff terps mature I believe. As she starts to thicken up and fill in the buds during home stretch, makes sense that the terps are filling in and maturing as well. She's now taken on a deep citrus with pine undertones that blend seemlessly. Sticky as all hell, and really starting to put on weight, canopy shot shows the right half of the canopy has collapsed.

High MAC F2 - Can't really pin down what this smells like, a sweet funk? This thing is a beast though. No canopy collapse for this beastly babe, some funky colors to be sure, however. The crispy tips and curled leaves are a low humidity problem I believe, the purple/black leatherish leaves are not. Not from low temps either. Buds are packing weight on and super dense.

Brother, you hooked me all the way up like a fuckin' tow truck. Best part is that I still have 10 High MAC beans left to pop. I couldn't wait to get some of your gear in the ground, so I found the pack with the most seeds, rounded it down to a 10 pack and popped the rest. Of the 4 I dropped, only this one made it, and I'm kinda pissed at myself for letting 3 slip through my fingers.

Still plotting on my next round's selection, but Dirty Michigan seems to be a frequent part of that internal conversation. I went a little overboard on restocking the seed stash and have a few too many options for easy choices now. May have a little extra time to decide, since I wanna upsize my space already. I started small on purpose, but man I want room for more plants, cuz I got seeds to burn through here, and I don't wanna kill 'em anymore.

42 Day Update

First up is Sanfune. She has moved from sweet candy to a more full bodied fruity aroma, still sweet, just not as in your face about it. Also picked up a little earthy funk somewhere, really faint right now, like you gotta believe it's there to smell it kinda faint. Has really started to fill in and thicken up, no doubt the tops would have laid over by harvest with the weight they're putting on. Had to MacGyver up some branch support with a roll of garden wire (think bread tie w/o the extra plastic on the sides), and went ahead and pulled the leaners back upright.

Now to the HMAC. Dunno what I did, but the larger fan leaves coming out of the buds are curling up from the edges and crisping up/browning out. Shouldn't be nute issues, unless she's just way more sensitive than the Sanfune all of the sudden. Started the flush on her today, hoping she can survive my unholy horticulture long enough to stumble across the finish line.

Hey brother what are your ec or ppm numbers? Are you doing run off tests . Looks like your locked out. Flushing with light nutrient solution 400 ppm till runoff is acceptable 650 to 700 ppm. Don't ever flush coco with pure water throws off cec balance . Pour 2 liters of light solution let runoff go for 10 seconds then take readings of runoff . You do have a ppm/ ec meter right? And a ph pen?

Your sanfune looks nute deficient also from lockout, but hard to tell without readings. Are you fertigating daily with 10 percent or more runoff? Coco is not soil and salts and coco are a different world than organic inputs and coco both from needs and frequency of fertigation. Anyway please do your due diligence and research so your next run is better. Anyway I can help feel free to ask.

I really enjoyed catching up on your journal man. That High Mac looks like a true survivor. She's keeping all issues in her older and less needed parts while still maturing her flowers like nothings goin on. That's the kind of plant I'd want in my grow. Never know when things might start slipping but I can tell from your posts that you have a passion for what your doing and will certainly get things dialed in. Looking forward to hearing the smoke report 👊

Coco amended soil, but not straight coco. I had planned to come back with Krusty buckets, but the aforementioned meters got cost prohibitive and a little intimidating at the onset. Did do enough homework to bookmark one of these for when I head back toward hydro. Which will be sooner than later, cuz dirt is heavy and I am old.

If it's a lockout situation, then it's probably due to using old soil. All the nutrients had leached out, so this could be a micro nutrient lockout. Could also be a salt buildup, since I've had to feed heavier with the salt based ferts than I normally would. Buildup would also explain the later onset without anything having changed. But then again, if I knew what the hell I was doin', I wouldn't be in this mess to begin with.

I appreciate the kind words and support my man. Most of the issues I ran into getting to this point was just lack of prep. Some of it was rust, but most of the problems were just plain failure to prepare properly. Not surprising given my headspace at the start of all this, if I'm being completely honest. I seem to have bumbled, fumbled and stumbled my way to within sight of the goal, however, so I guess I'll just have to pull my shit together and limp this one on to the house.

Your doing fine for first time back. As you stated preparation and planning are key to cannabis cultivation and key to life. Few good things come from either pissing in the wind. I'm sure with your excitement and want your next run will be much better. I'm old also, 56, and understand the body doesn't work like it used too, that why the style and medium you decide to grow in has to fit your lifestyle in terms of physical and time restrictions and of course financial abilities. You can grow amazing weed on the cheap if that's an issue. I have been there, trust me. Whatever style you choose, I can really only help you with hydro and salts styles, there are much better growers for different styles than me on this site that can assist you with soil, coco or mix of the two grown organically. If you decide to go organically you are going to have the best chance to grow the best weed in terms of taste and smell , but will sacrifice yield and speed of growth and will have to implement a weekly pest management plan(IPM). Organics are pest magnets. So chose wisely buddy. If I was growing for myself I would go the 80/20 70/30 coco- organic route because no special equipment such as meters, irrigation set ups etc are needed and yield is not a concern for most home growers. And daily inputs and time are far less than hydro-salt techniques. But it's up to you . Right now you are growing with salts, to be consistent with salts you need meters both ph and ec/ppm. I would never recommend the combo meters they suck the apera combo meters you posted link to do not buy it will be dead within a year and is consistently going out of calibration I owned one years ago. I use a blue lab ph pen and apera ec pen. My bluelab is 3 yrs old and yeah I still check weekly for accuracy with ec solution, but normally is within acceptable parameters. If your on municipal water you will be amazed the fluctuations on ec and ph from the tap on different days. Here in Baltimore it is great for growing but can go from 110 to 180 ppm depending on weather conditions outside, rain ,snow etc affect ppm levels in municipal water and ph. My water ph is 7.1 but can fluctuate from 6.9 to 7.3 ph on some days after a storm. Ph is crucial to hydro for proper and balanced nutrient absorption. Get a water report from your local public works office they are free and usually online. Fluctuations are a given but will give ya a guideline especially for mineral content and toxic metals . Many municipalities use chloramine and not chlorine for sterilization. This is important to know because chloramine takes longer for conversion to gaseous state than chlorine. Anything else I can help ya with please ask, If you decide to grow hydroponically. Cheers my brother my post to you may have seemed somewhat harsh but tough luv is where it's at in my opinion along with truth and encouragement. Have a great Thanksgiving

No worries at all brother, I get it. The tough love was expected, I mean, I saw those pics before they went up. I posted 'em anyway and decided to take my lumps because it really does take all kinds. There are some weed legends on here absolutely fuckin' crushin' it, and they are truly inspirational. Then there's me, I'm more educational in a "here's what not to do" way. Maybe even a little inspirational in a "if this idiot can grow weed, then so can I" sense. Either way, as long as my fuck ups can help someone else avoid a pothole or hiccup in their grow, or encourage someone to throw a seed in dirt, I can keep my chin up knowing something good came from it.

Good to know on the Apera combo. I landed on that one as it seemed well reviewed and did lots of stuff, and I assumed it would cover whatever measurement needs I had. Bluelab was a name I'd run into while shopping for meters, but settled on the Apera as a cost/function compromise. When/if I do dive down the hydro hole, will having decent pH and ec/ppm meters be enough? Is there a 'starter' meter that you'd recommend for people wanting to dip their toe into the hydro waters and see if it's for them? Something not top of the line, but functional enough to get the job done for a grow or two. I picked up a $10 Vivosun pH meter, and just playing with it testing tap water I knew I would never trust it with a plant I actually cared about.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, wishing you all a peaceful, stress free time with loved ones and family this holiday season.

The apera should last you a year, hopefully more , just make sure to calibrate it weekly with the measuring solutions it came with if you decide to grow hydroponically. Tds is total dissolved solids which is a ec/ppm meter. I hope your apera multi lasts I may have got a shitty one. Also if not used daily store in your storage solution or in tap water that keeps the ph probes from drying, most ph pen failures are caused by dryed probes. Don't ever use distilled or condensate water for storage. For water testing for hydroponics that is all ya need a decent ph and ec meter. I use the apera ec 20 for my ec meter it's around 50 bucks and has lasted 4 yrs and going strong. My ph meter is a bluelab pen at 3 years old. I also have a bluelab ppm pen and extra ph pen for backup. Fyi weekly cleaning of probes is recommended at wil help keep meter calibration in check. What eventually are you considering hydro wise? Hempy buckets I think you mentioned earlier you have done before. I think that is a excellent way to start with hydro. If ya do make sure to get #4 perlite or larger to avoid floating. I can help you with any decisions or questions hydroponically you want input from my personal experience. I have done ebb and flow, rdwc, hempys , and for the past 10 years coco perlite. I used to do 70/30 mix when I hand watered but now use 50/50 mix with automated multiple fertigations daily with crop steering principles. I look very forward to ya sticking around and watching the progression I know will happen . Cheers buddy

Growing weed is simple my friend, if ya keep the basics in check ,I bet in a year you will be smiling and laughing at your past bad experiences and growing kick ass weed .

Update, sorry I realize now you didn't get the apera combo. The apera 20 series in my opinion is best bang for the buck. I'm sure other members could also give ya other brands with similar price points that they have had success with

50 day update
Things got a little hectic this week and I missed my photo op on day 49 before lights out. So here we are a day late and dollar short...

HMAC
Flush seems to have stopped the torching of the leaves, last few days have seen new growth as the buds have started to throw what look like the beginnings of fox tails, but might just be getting really chunky. New bud leaf growth appears green and much healthier. Of course, there's no help for that which was already burnt beyond recognition, but growth hasn't stopped, and hopefully I've just cost myself some weight and time. Now that I'm not actively frying leaves off her, I'll start cleaning up the mess I made. Just had to make sure things were evening out first cuz my back is only gonna let me get to the back of that tent once to trim those crispy leaves out. Trichs have all pretty much gone cloudy, not quite milky under the loupe. Calyxes have started to swell, there are some 1/4" unseeded calyxes just bulging out in places.

Sanfune
Did not get hit nearly as hard as the HMAC. Could be she takes the nutes better, or more likely, I just didn't feed that tub as much as the other one. Maybe a li'l column A, li'l column B. Seems to be recovering much like the HMAC. Here's a couple shots of one of her tops with my bic for reference. Included a profile shot to get a look at the other tops as well, they're all pretty much the same size. She has really started to fill in and get top heavy of late. Trichs still >50% clear, so she still has some time to thicken up and fill out those curves.

Also, pollinated preflowers have started to split and reveal nice dark mature seeds on both girls. I'd guess maybe 50-75 seeds per plant on the pollinated branches, so even if I only get 50% germ, I should have a few packs worth of Sanfune F2s and HMACxSanfune F1s. Really excited about those F2s, Sanfune isn't an easy pack to get hands on anymore that I'm aware of.

Merry Christmas, Hunters!

Been a very hectic little bit for me, didn't even realize it had been 3 weeks since an update....

All the plants came down between days 60-63, mainly due to back issues and just not being able to properly tend the plants. Going in to prune out all the leaf damage from my heavy handed fertilizing really aggravated some nerve issues I got goin' on. I've been all but immobile, able to move about only in limited bursts at home, with time on a heating pad in between outings to the kitchen and bathroom. It also taught me a lot about what not to do next time - I need a larger space, at least a tent I can walk into so I don't have bend and lean into a 2'x4'. Also, smaller containers, because my old ass can't move a sterilite tub full of dirt anymore without cheap sitcom backpain theatrics.

I didn't take many pics, and what I did take was more like crime scene photos than grow documentation. That much abuse, that late in flower, and the plants really didn't have a chance to recover, they were just struggling to finish. They did finish, however, and I did end up with several jars of my own weed that I'm high as shit on it right now, so mission accomplished on that front. If I find enough self control that some of harvest makes it through a proper cure, I'll write up a proper smoke report. Highlights so far, though, are that HMAC hits remarkably smooth for the overfertilization she had that late in flower and will plant your ass if you hit it a couple times too many. Not a lot of nose, but I overdried the shit out of her before getting it in the jar, so that's probably on me, it does seem to be coming back as it cures. The Sanfune, while not as smooth as HMAC, is not a harsh or overly expansive smoke, and def has more zip to it. Find it hard to sleep on this stuff, very clear mentally, wanna play games and exercise the noodle learning shit, but the body still relaxes.

All in all, a pretty damn good Christmas present to myself!

Happy Holidays everyone, hope you all stay safe, warm, and in the company of those who love you.
