Birds and Blooms

Perhaps as a houseplant.

Many perennials are sold as annuals, up here.

Like these beauties

Shasta Daisy will winter up here.

They come with their own hazards
I'm so confused - is the 697 grams he's being charged with real pot or 'daisy pot?'
Did they rip out the daisies after they found other, real pot?
Do Canadians have legal recourse? Can you sue the cops?
The article reads like a puff piece for the cops...

Cannot identify.

Not a Canadian goose, but around Goose sized.
Must be passing through, I don't recall ever seeing anything like it.
I saw the head dip underwater, but it was not a proper 'ass up', never saw it dive.
Almost look like a Loon (which would never show their face around here) but the back was dark black. It spread its wings , while greeting another of its kind , and I could see the underside. Belly was snow white. All white bib.
Never heard a sound.
Black head, slender neck, long large bill.
Not a Cormorant , and the neck was too long for a Mergasner.

I wish I were closer.
When I started composing this post I was clueless, although now I am starting to suspect it was a Western Grebe.

@Jewels
The markings look familiar. Can't say I was ever close enough to see those eyes.

Are you on a significant migration path? Do you get a lot of big flocks?
I've seen cranes, swans, and a variety of geese regularly over the last month. Never realized how many cranes there were until the last few years.

How about pelicans? They all disappeared from here some time around early September. Do they pass through your hood?

Are you on a significant migration path?
Yes, I lived in a rural setting, when I was younger. The surrounding Farmland was irrigated. Now I am just down the road, but I am in the ( call it a ) city now, so I don't see as much.

This is May 15th.
I see lots in the summer, not lately.20230515_212104.jpg

..and put an absolutely huge grin on my face. Fewer things in this world more wonderful than the sound of a happy child.

Looking for a good haul
Deer clean me out, before they even blossom, more often than not.
Robins nest in my Elms and they will hit most of the red ones that do show.
'Course the guy doing the work is last in line - if we are ever lucky enough to harvest one.

Started with only a few plants. Been pushing the patch bigger every year, with runners. Slow going, as there are not enough hours of direct sunlight, being tucked up under the east facing fence like that.

Got some mild hail today. Whole yard is littered with (Elm tree seed) Oats.
They are paper dry and drift like snow when that wind gets ripp'n.

I had a nice patch once. I planted 24 in a single line. By the end of summer they had already doubled. I didn't have deer issues but the squirrels would drive me crazy! They would pull one off take a bite and drop it. I'd find these one bit berries all down my line and in the yard. I haven't seen elm here in awhile. They made everyone in town cut them town when the beetles hit. I get tons of the maple whirly birds from the neighbors trees now. ;(
