Research how the plant grows, things like growing techniques and traditions, look into regions and study what they grow and how it's processed, and read scientific/academic studies to gain functional knowledge and find that region's global context. Study the olfactory effects, the chemistry of how wine's components interact with food, cultural relevance, etc.
You're 100% right that a "weed somm" certification is bullshit. There's still so much we don't know about cannabis because it's been essentially impossible to study for the last 85 or so years.
There are hundreds of different grape varietals that, even within the same grape variety, have minor variances between them genetically (there are dozens if not hundreds of different Dijon and Pommard clones of Pinot Noir, for example).
There are thousands of cannabis strains and increasing daily, most with different phenos lying within. None have been studied to the same degree as grapes. Nobody was doing market studies and genetic analysis on ECSD and Piff in the '90s. ?
Scientifically it's essentially impossible to compare the breadth and depth of wine to cannabis. Even if I were doing a "Diesel and diesel dinner" with decades old Alsatian Riesling and different diesel strains, I'd never, ever call myself a weed somm. It's an insult to people that study relentlessly for years.

I should do some more reading on that facility in Mississippi I think it is, where they have had a long standing govt grow for research purposes. One of the very few I believe. But on that first point, because of our lack of being able to research the plant further, how can these assholes even make a standardized system they teach this on.

I hear that brotha! I was an ironworker for years before I got into stuffin' you wifes box 5 days a week. So you can like, learn the basics of how to perform the trade in a classroom setting, but you cannot learn the trade without going out and getting in the shit. They dont teach you in class how to make shit work on the fly, situational thinking that you only gain from experience on previous jobs. Information that is ONLY learned from one journeyman passing the info along to another. You know this. I know this. I guess the one good thing about this program is it helps identify people you would want nothing to do with!
