Cicadas are the worst we call them screaming bugs here, they get deafening at times when they're numbers are high, and I've always had good luck fishing when the mayflies are out in force
Got hit in the forehead by either a cicada or similar flying bug while driving a motorcycle at night without a helmet. Felt like someone hit me with a ball peen hammer. Lucky I didn't lay the bike down. After that I wont drive a bike without a helmet.
Just to be clear, they (the mayflies) are annoying. Nothing more. Just very very very annoying. Get in your ear, get in your nose, get in your mouth, you get the idea. I will attest to the great fishing though.
When I was in high school I worked at a car wash a guy came from Canada and said here’s 20 bucks I’m really sorry he pulls his Tahoe in and it looked like gravy was all over the front he said he hit the mayfly migration on his way back home it was literally like dripping off the bumper it was disgusting

Had similar when I lived in CO.. Was locusts. When you'd walk in your yard, they'd part like waves around you, was insane. You could smell them in the air it was so bad. I had a cat at the time and he'd get sick and puke up grasshoppers about three or four times a day from eating them all the time.
