Solar Power

Its been awhile, but I helped a friend set up a couple panels on his farm...it wasnt huge just a barn on 30 acres...out in the middle of nowhere nearest town 40min..

Just ran strip led lighting, and inverters which my friend used to plug in his cpap..volcano, wifes rice cooker..thought the latter 2 can drain your charge rather good well..

I think the main components were:
Panels,
Controller
fusebox/kit
deep cycle marine batteries..(we built battery banks)
power inverter/charger

it was worth it for us, this place was primitive..no water or electric....we basically slept in the loft of the barn..but we had decent light from strip leds and power for the things necessary..

I would ask @SmithsJunk about it. I remember he was messing around with solar a couple years back.
Agreed, he relies on that power for necessities too I believe. Also @JL2G would be a good person to hit up, he's been trying to recreate the sun for a few years now (well I kinda have too, for not as long, and not nearly as cool lol) so he has great advice and insight on just about anything build and electrical related.

Don't think he likes me...

I asked about this on the farm about 6 months ago with no luck.......... seems that no one growing indoors is doing it on solar......... Really I don't see any out here.... 2 or 3 place's and that's it.....

Nah, don't think that mang.
Got no issue with ya at all, in fact I like reading alot of your posts. ???
Apologies if I ever gave a bad impression of myself.
??? I do that sometimes. Lol.
Happy to help with anything I can.

I have a roof full of solar panels, but mine are grid connected, not battery reserve.
And it depends on what the usage is for in the setup on what you'd need.
Setting up a system to run the bare essentials and a bit extra is not hard to do. Not too overly expensive either if your the labor.

Now to power a grow op is a different story due to the massive amount of power used, and the duration it's being ran. It's why you don't see many or any at all solar systems being used to power indoor grows.
Supplemental lighting systems being used with covered greenhouses yes that's feasible to do.
That's what I see alot of.
Where your just running lights to extend the day for vegging, and or doing light dep to flower them.
Pretty sure that's what @SmithsJunk is doing.

IE: my solar panels completely cover the usage of just my house and all its essentials, but my grow uses as much or slightly more electricity than the rest of the house does.
My flower room uses basically 18 kw hours a day.
And veg uses 9kw hours.
So 27 kw hours a day is what I'd need just for the grow. Lol.
Just ballparking it thats a good $15-20,000 in materials, possibly more.
But that's also a system that'd power a 2000-2500 sq ft home easily. Lol.

I was thinking you were someone else.... jwm2....... wrong person...... and I was just joking....... don't think i know you form over there......

see that's what I was thinking...... I was going to put solar on the house in victorville but that was a diff story too........................

so ty for your reply........

ya you can pay alot of 200- 300 month Bills for the 25 G's to get started then the batties will kill you every 3-5 yrs................. even if you have a hook up on used fork lift batts. and etc......

Now I am thinking about it for just a few thing's like in a cabin where there's no power and the cost to use wouldn't make since to run it to there......

I asked my brother about this cuz he does solar systems, I was kinda stoned off my ass tho.
I remember its gonna cost you 1k per panel for good ones.
About 2k for an inverter & controller. Mounts, wiring, etc another few k

Long story short just to get you a system for minimum essentials it would roughly cost 7-10k & you could only run stuff during the day. Keep in mind that's all high end equipment, not sure what the cheaper stuff runs, they stay away from it.

It would be easyer

to drive back to ca...... jump on top of a roof, take all the panels off and start form there......................................lol J/K again

Lol my brother got yelled at by a neighbor of the house he was on top of & measuring. Thought he was a robber cuz of the mask & gloves. Homeowner comes out like, "wtf is going on? Why are you yelling at my solar guy?" Lol

yeah the batteries are a real big cost of a stand alone setup. The rest of it aint cheap either. lol. I did a solar lease for the ones on my roof. If I wasn't growing I wouldn't even have an electric bill, just a $46 a month solar lease. lol

A small setup works great for a cabin or other off the grid usage. A few batteries and you'd be good for the basic needs. Not talking some huge fridge or anything, but lights, and other essentials for sure.

Those numbers sound about right for what I was quoting against.
It does have its payback time, takes awhile, but then its all $ in your pocket. lol.

Funny stuff there. lol. We were doing a basement finish job a few years ago and using the 4x4 egress window for all the materials haul in so we didn;t have to trample shit through the house. Was a pretty upscale neighborhood with alot of nice houses.
Needless to say a concerned neighbor thought a robbery was going on and we had 3 squad cars there and cops with guns drawn asking what we were up to. lmfao
After it was all explained we all had a good laugh, cops included. rofl

ya you could have 2k just in batts real fast......

I was going to put it in the house in victorville....... there just about giving them away in Ca...... and the tax write off would of help....... BUT I knew I was leaving so I didn't........

I have been lucky....... in 40yrs I only had the cops called 1 time in Inpls.IN............. I know of 10 homes in ca I could go take the whole system right now and no one would say anything.......

Most people in ca don't really give a shit about what's going on around them.......

Good Morning Alll

ya I'll really look into this cause I want to build 2 cabins at some point on diff land also and I don't want to deal with the power company on those............. and they really won't need alot of power....................................

A lot of jurisDICKtions will allow you to build and be off grid.......but many won't. Mine is one of them. Minimum size requirements for a dwelling as well. You'd THINK you could buy property here in the mountains/sticks/boonies and do what you want but that isn't the case...especially if you have nosy neighbors like I do.

I've been toying with solar panels/pumps here a bit. Thinking of buying a couple more set ups to drip trees/the garden and eat into the power bill a bit. Right now I'm just running a panel to a pump.... direct drive. I need to take it a step farther and set up a battery system to even out the flow. I have solar fans in my dome and the up and down shit when the clouds roll over drives me nuts...LOL. Could have installed a solar waterfall in the pond as well but again...that up/down woulda drove me crazy. Definitely not my forte'. Been goin to YouTube University a lot lately.... LOL.

My nephew in the Midworst is looking at a big system for his place but it's a feed back to the grid gig. Likely a good deal but does nothing to power his house if the grid goes down. Evidently that is a huge outlay of cash above and beyond......and not feasible for most, unfortunately.

Yer best bet for growing weed is still the Sun.....and it's a free system for the most part....
